demons existed in only lore ( the bijū were demons in name, but not truly the demons vividly described in their sacred texts ), or at least outside of the realm of human eyes and what they could perceive. ghosts, spirits, any other mythical creature detailed in their tales of centuries old and tomes, surely existed ( that much, she believed ; she believed that there were gods resting somewhere alongside her ancestors, watching over with careful eyes ). perhaps they were in plain sight but so well disguised that no one would have been able to realize, or perhaps they were well hidden, wishing to remain out of sight. regardless, it wasn’t until she met bon that the reality of their existence came to light ( although she still could not see ). it was what he had come to her country, her village, for —- to eradicate the demons posing harm upon the masses, to ensure that peace reigned and that all was safe. as strong and gifted as she was as a shinobi, she was, more or less, left defenseless against enemies she couldn’t see, even with the aid of her byakugan. a temptaint, he had called it, a wound revealing the supernatural to naked eyes. were it not for the rising problem of malicious demons, bon would not be here —- all the same, what a miracle it was that so many of konohagakure, including herself, remained free of such a wound, despite the growing numbers of those who had been affected.
and yet, although she was blind to what exorcists could see, she could feel the changing in the air and atmosphere. it was ominous, and a sense of foreboding began to blanket over her in a manner that was different from what she felt upon encountering the danger of enemy shinobi. the forest seemed all too still, with nary a breeze to rustle the foliage, the songs of birds dying out in favor of silence. it was the calm before the storm. her activated byakugan saw nothing around her, even far in the distance, other than the off rustling of leaves in the bushes that seemed to come from nowhere at all. were these the demons bon had spoken of? these were enemies that she could not see, rendering her all but defenseless against them. even if she could see them, her methods of fighting would be ineffective in their eradication ; if she could do a thing against ill - bearing demons, bon’s presence in the land of fire, in konoha, would be unnecessary. as it was, there were not enough monks of their own in the country to offer their aid with the rising number of attacks of apparently demons, and perhaps they didn’t possess the similar methods of purification, or equally effective methods, to banish them from whence they came. so many had been hurt, so many now plagued with the demonic wound ( although, it could become an asset to locate them & at least get away ) ; would hinata be next?
she wondered what sort of demon it was, how big it was, how fast it could move, and how powerful it could be as she began to race back the other way as she fled from branch to branch. going by foot would have been faster, but perhaps the ground was where it would have an advantage. hinata knew nothing and was doing her best to move as fast as she possibly could to return to the village, to have someone search for and retrieve the visiting exorcist. but all the same, she absolutely did not wish to risk bringing this potential demon into the village where innocent civilians were. quick on her feet, she was a blur in the trees, but she could hear the fast approaching creature now tailing her. every now and the she turned back so that all possible blind spots were covered, seeing through her byakugan in observance of her surroundings. every bit of movement was closely monitored and noted, and a fierce expression plastered itself to her countenance. whenever it neared, she sent down a vacuum palm from above in its general direction, praying that it would be enough to at least slow it down. before long, she had reached a gate of the village, and called towards the watch for her friend, then putting up a defensive stance of her own to fend it off from the village as best as she could ; she was grateful for the enormous walls around it, protecting it like the shadowing of a god’s hands around something sacred. now in open ground, there were no clues of nature to reveal the demon’s place. she could hear its cries growing nearer, but she was a second too late in leaping back, feeling a blunt blow to her arm.
breathing in sharply at the impact, she leaped back several times, staring at her sleeve that seemed as if it had been burned by acid, her pale skin beneath it exhibiting obvious burns. was this the dreaded temptaint? her other hand clung to her upper arm and her eyes darted around frantically as she winced. a ghastly vision appeared in her line of sight, a phantom of a hound. now that she could see it, she could avoid it more effectively, but how well could she fend for herself with the irritation and sting of the burn? before she could prepare another attack, she felt a hand fall upon her shoulder — she recognized the presence easily : bon. plus, a team of shinobi who had previously been affected by temptaints as his line of defense.
‘ bon - san, ’ she breathed out in relief. with a smile, she stepped back to let him and the team get to work. immediately fishing through her pockets for a salve for burns, she took it out and applied it to her arm ; someone would have to look at it more closely at a later time. but now, she wanted to remain and ensure that no one else fell prey to injury ( she recognized no one else that could use medical ninjutsu ; she should stay ). holy verses filled the air and her comrades kept the beast at bay and bon behind safety as it began to target him. it took time, but the exorcism had succeeded. when he rushed to her, asking if she was all right, she simply showed him her arm, cracking a half - smile. ‘ it isn’t so bad, ’ hinata said, letting out a soft laugh. ‘ i always keep ointments and salves.. just in case! ’ pausing, she allowed her smile to widen ( it was small, but genuine, the smile of an angel, the subtle & radiant light of the moon ). leaning up just slightly, she pressed a light kiss to his cheek, almost barely brushing her lips over him. ‘ thank you for coming, bon - san. this—.. this was a real pinch.. ’
