Rodney wasn't a man given to tears but some things just struck you, you know? Some things were so horrible, so unthinkable, so tragic that the eyes misted of their own accord.
Coffee was beautiful. Coffee was wonderful. Coffee was ambrosia itself.
Even Folgers didn't deserve this level of barbarism; this teeny-tiny, itty-bitty, microscopic excuse for a cup.
Rodney wept for the beautiful roasted beans that deserved so much better.
Depeche Mode's "Black Celebration" eases out of the sound system instead of the usual strains of Auld Lang Syne as soon as the elevator doors open, directly into the middle of the loft apartment, facing a blackness increased by heavy velvet curtains covering the high glass walls.
The first guitar chord and one light turns on directly behind him like a halo. A silhouette black on black but even then you recognize the posture. The cologne. You can predict the smirk. The exact curve of his lip and arch of his brow. It's been your nightmare for so many decades and now you're here. You're both here.
You wait. You know the song and you know his methods and you know to wait for your cue. He's coordinated a light show: each throbbing chord changing the direction, revealing him in pieces.
"Let's have a black celebration," Dave Gahan purrs and the man waiting for you is lit from above. Again, trying to be the angel.
"So," he exhales softly, hands folded and resting on the bar in front of him. He's got a whole matte black framework of lights baffled by curtains and shades suspended from the ceiling. He's outdone himself this time. The lighting and his suit tailored to give him the best appearance. He's aimed for a Silver Fox Pierce Brosnan kind of look, all smooth and angles but he's landed closer to a mature Ben Stiller. It's…. kinda hot?
He makes a gesture, and your focus goes to a bar stool waiting in front of him. It's been there the whole time but you didn't notice it.
He's leaning on his elbows now, chin resting in his hand when you sit down. "You look good, kid." He pushes off the bar and then leans forward on it again, this time knuckles down, shoulders rolled back.
"Are you flexing?"
"No," he says with a little tightness in his breath that turns into an attempted cough. "Been in the damp," he says to excuse the "coughing" and still managing to get one little pec squeeze in.
He takes a bottle out from below the bar and sets it and a glass down in front of you. You take your own bottle out of the inner pocket of your jacket and set it down next to his. He grins and nods, pouring his own shot and raising the glass to you in a salute. "Vaffanculo!"
You return the gesture and give him another good look. He's 55 now. You both are. And here you are, taking a drink, watching this man, waiting to see what the next move is going to be.
Every five years, it's you against him. Your brain against his. Since you were fifteen. Every battle ending in a draw — neither of you capable of losing and neither of you willing to forfeit just to end the stupid competition.
"I forgot your eyes were brown." Well done. Brilliant opening move. Maybe stop staring at his eyes and focus. So far he hasn't given you any indication as to what you're up against this time.
Several songs have gone past since you sat down and now it's Robert Smith, assuring you he remembers everything.
"Yeah, a lot of people think they're hazel. I think because I went so grey they look lighter?"
"I dunno man, your eyebrows are still pretty dark so you'd think that would have more of an effect. I guess I just didn't remember that."
"After all these years," he says and a little bit of the Bronx is creeping in already. Is he actually drinking? You lean a little closer to try to get a whiff and instead find yourself forehead-to-forehead with your Nemesis and those very definitely brown eyes and his hand on your shoulder. Just … touching, not holding or even being threatening. Just in a "please don't move" gesture.
His bottle doesn't smell like it contains actual alcohol and he doesn't either. You know there isn't any in your bottle but you still feel that disconnected floating feeling when he says "I forfeit."
It feels almost unnaturally silent for a second. And then The Mission is singing and "all over this wasteland" and it sums up how you feel. You've won. You won without making a single move.
"You can't do that!" you insist.
"It's too late. You heard me say it. I forfeit. I don't want to do this anymore."
The punch in the gut you'd been bracing for wouldn't have impacted half as hard as that sentence. the wind is still knocked out of you and you manage to gasp. "The fuck?"
You stand up to catch your breath and stare, slackly. "So that's it? You're not my Nemesis anymore?"
"No. We're getting old. I don't want to keep doing this. I don't want to do these elaborate plans every five years. I want to go do stupid stuff like go to amusement parks and museums and catch up on my reading. I figure now is good, because I'm still pretty healthy. Still in OK shape I can go do stuff and also take advantage of the senior discounts."
"Those are all really valid points, but…" Suddenly you don't want to finish the sentence. Obviously he had a completely different view of this relationship and you think you should take your win and go home. Get some sleep. Ponder a Nemesis-free lifestyle. You wonder if you're too old for a new one.
It sounds like he says "So would you want in on it?"
You realize he's been looking at you for a while, waiting for an answer.
"Can we do that?"
"I can't find anything in the rules that says we can't. Look, I'm never going to beat you, and you're obviously never going to beat me ("what do you mean obviously!" you interject sharply) so let's just hang out and do cool shit."
"Could we still set traps and leave codes and stuff?"
"Oh, god yeah! But now I'll be able to see your face when something explodes in it."

This work is a collection of drabbles and ficlets. Unless otherwise stated, each chapter will be a standalone piece.
So this is not a plea for money. This is something that surprised me, and chatting with people on discord, they were unaware of as well.
Discovered last year I couldn’t look at my 2015 MacBook Air without it triggering nausea and migraines, and figured the screen died. Have been getting by on my phone, but concluded I really need a laptop again.
Saved up, realised I could afford a brand new MacBook Neo, and got one.
-And I couldn’t spend more than five minutes looking at the screen without massive eye strain, nausea, vertigo, and if I pushed it, I-need-to-lie-down-in-a-dark-room-for-hours migraines.
Looking up MacBook and Eyestrain explained what is going on. The liquid retina displays that Apple currently has uses Pulse Width Modulation or PWM. In order to give the screens a deeper depth of colour and contrast, PWM flickers between several hundred to thousand times a second.
And there is currently no way to turn it off. There are settings and apps to reduce it, but there is no way to stop the screen from flickering. Checked Apple forums, called Apple Support, and the time I could look at the screen kept shrinking. Got the laptop Tuesday, returned it Friday, today is Sunday and I’m still dealing with a vertigo migraine.
For MacBooks, it seems to vary on the computer model and the software it uses. In retrospect, the issue with my MacBook Air started after a major software update.
And it’s not just an Apple thing. Current Windows and Android screens do the same thing. There’s even a Reddit for people who are sensitive to PWM flickers to help find computers and screens that won’t trigger eyestrain and headaches.
So, yeah. This week has been a learning experience. But for those who are prone to headaches and migraines, this may be something to be aware of, cause I was not.

Sesshoumaru had been quite happily resting against the bark of a tree that still, summer evening, when he sensed a presence draw near. Footfalls graced his hearing.
He figured the miko would say a greeting and pass by- mokomoko puffing up with shock when he felt a weight sink against his side.
Golden eyes snapped open. “Miko. What are you doing?”
A muffled sigh reached his hearing. “Can I ask you something?”
“This one should like his question to be answered first.”
“Am I too much?” she continued on, and it was then he scented the pungent odor of alcohol on her breath. “Am I…difficult to be around?”
Sesshoumaru let his head rest against the bark again, cutting his eyes to the tree branches above. “You should ask your friends these things, not I.”
“They'll just tell me what I wanna hear. C'mon, we defeated Naraku together and we're totally buddies now. Please?”
Buddies. Sesshoumaru did not like the way that word tasted on his tongue.
“It's just…my temper can be bad, and I know I'm moody and,” she motioned with her hands. “A lot. Maybe I'm not cut out for love.”
Scenting genuine worry leak into her scent, followed by a small sniff, Sesshoumaru glanced down at her head of dark hair as she pulled away. “Sorry. Nevermind. I was being weird.”
She'd broken up with the Hanyou several months ago but it appeared she was finally processing it. Hn.
His hand closed around her elbow before she could leave. With a tug, she fell right back into mokomoko.
“You are not unlovable, foolish girl,” he uttered. “You are…endearing enough to warrant affection.”
“R-really?”
“Hn.”
Kagome sniffed again, taking a few deep breaths. When she pushed back her hair and finally looked up at him, blue eyes glistened with tears. She gave a wobbly smile.
“Thanks, buddy.”
“You will die by my hand should you call this one thus again.”
She laughed, cuddling into mokomoko drunkenly. “Naww you wouldn't do that. I warrant affection! You said it yourself, no takebacks.”
Giving a heavy sigh, Sesshoumaru unfurled his claws. His deadly hand found her hip, resting there for the remainder of the night. “If you drool on this one, that is also grounds for execution.”
