Thinking abt how someone said not to gatekeep butch and that a woman can wear a sun dress and have long hair and wear full make up and acrylic nails and still be butch and like that is fundamentally false However
There is a reason "Saturday Night Butch" was a term like some butches couldn't safely present as butch/gnc every day and dressed femininely for survival and only dressed butch when they went to bars on the weekends
And I feel like to an extent thar can still be the case today. While not every gnc person is LGBT, gender nonconformity is such a common thing for LGBT ppl that a lot of cishets will look at the very act of gendrr nonconformity as a sign someone is gay and/or trans and will actively deny them jobs/housing based on it.
Some jobs are still so archaic that they require women to wear skirts/dresses still. I want to work in a funeral home but as a butch lesbian my desire to present in a masculine way as a woman may be deemed "unprofessional" and I may have to wear dresses and skirts and dress femininely and be a "Saturday Night Butch." I'm still butch
But the point of those posts is that butch culture is about subverting the concepts of masculinity and womanhood. To be a butch you must be gnc. This isn't gatekeeping, it's objective. There's a reason Saturday Night Butches would come cruising in jeans and sports jackets, dressed masculine and finally in a way they were comfortable with on the weekends after a whole work week of dressing in a way they felt wasn't them
