Month of Saiyuki (10)

Most underrated character:

This laugh will never get old…

ZAKURO!! Omg why does this guy not get more love?! We’ve had all sorts of villains in Saiyuki, but this pompous windbag has stood above the rest. Why? Because he’s so full of himself and gets lost so easily but this knucklehead might just have a good heart after all. He really lives in a little world of his own though.

Most villains or antagonists (not counting Ukoku) usually appear for 2-3 chapters at most and then they’re gone. But to our surprise, a couple of volumes later Minekura decided to show he was around and VERY LOST and eventually gave him his own chapter.

It’s a shame he got killed of in the anime, but of course we know this was all sped up fast (I really want him in whatever future anime to be brought back). I presume his chapter must’ve appeared way after the Gunlock anime ended, which is probably why Minekura-sensei made this chapter. We get to see how much of a dork and a spaz Zakuro can be. Seems he’s got a sense of chivalry as well. I’m not sure if that’s the right word but certainly he thought it important to return the favor to Goku for saving him!

So where is Zakkun now? Probably lost somewhere in India, and I’m still waiting for him to show up in the manga. I see no reason why he would not. He occasionally appears on mini dramas and CDs (such as Saiyuki Party and Saiyuki Karuta game where this audio file is from), gets a profile usually whenever Minekura decides to . Then there was his cameo on the Saiyuki Twitter Log last year and compared to others, he actually interacted with the Sanzo Ikkou in the current timeline (Hazel and Gato’s tweet were out of the current timeline). Bottom line, if Minekura has kept him around that means he’s got to be far more important that we’re being led to believe!
