I think MarriageToxin fans are failing to consider that Kinosaki is both genders. They're both. She literally says she's both. He's comfortable as both. "Block me if you think Kinosaki's a man/woman-" My siblings in queer, can we not die on a hill that's already been conquered? They're both.

And that's not even getting into the fact that you can't try to slap USAmerican queer culture on a Japanese queer character. Japanese gender identity is its own thing. They've got their own culture going on there. There are certainly points of intersection, but a Japanese person isn't going to express their gender in the same way as a USAmerican, trans or otherwise.

And this isn't me saying you can't headcanon as you want, and I understand the desire to see yourself reflected specifically in a genre where you don't often see it, but please just be sure to acknowledge the things above, and don't harass someone for utilizing the canonical text as it is presented.

Just to be clear y'all I love all interpretations of kinosaki (except maybe cis woman Mei cause what do you mean) and I just like my particular trans girl/gender fluid/non binary headcannon because it speaks to me the most. We can all play with our dolls how we want AND place nice together.

Marriagetoxin would really hit the peak if, at the end of the book when Kinosaki and Gero are finally getting married, she looked at the camera and said "Gero, I know I told you I was a man back in chapter 1, but that's just because of cultural forces I was too scared to contend with that prevented me from being honest with myself. I'm a girl - I'll always be a girl. Gero, I'm trans." "Wait sorry," Gero will say, adjusting his glasses. "Was that a revelation? No, sorry I don't mean it like... I just thought we were on the same page about this already." And then they get marriedtoxin.

I love my queer romcom disguised as a battle shounen so much. Tonako trying to create a "strong family" by force because of losing her own family, and in the process alienating herself from her own happiness is so fucking good I love this series.

I'm looking forward to the dissertations about the themes around family and independence, if I don't just write one myself.

ALSO WAIT DOES THIS MEAN TONAKO WILL BE HELPED OUT BY KINOSAKI AND WHAT IF IT FLIPS AND TONAKO ACTUALLY STARTS TELLING KINOSAKI TO GO AFTER WHAT THEY WANT (Gero :3). The visions are coming to me.

MarriageToxin is so smart and open-minded in the way it presents a possible main couple who is queer while taking into consideration the average target audience.

Making Kinosaki act and dress up as a woman for the whole story can appeal to prejudiced people and gradually make them warm up to the dynamic between the main characters and provide an opportunity for them to see queer people in a better light. However, at the same time Kinosaki not having to conform to the stereotypical image of men for him to identify as a guy is also a breath of fresh air in its own, especially for a deuteragonist in a shonen. I think (or at least I hope) it is a stepping stone in paving the way for more open queer representation in shonen in the future.

This is one of the reasons why I think Gerosaki ending up together is important to the themes and story itself, and making Kinosaki a biological woman who just pretends to be a guy for the plot, as some theories suggest, takes away from the story and how it handles queerness cause in that case we would go two steps back instead of a step forward when it comes to queer representation.

It would be nice to have a shounen that breaks away from the usual expectations and MarriageToxin does not shy away from writing queer people openly, Gero's sister is openly a lesbian and in a relationship with a woman for example, and this is so important to me because I need people to stop associating the idea of queer people existing solely in works categorized exclusively as bls or gls. It is only when it comes to queer-coded ships or queer-coded characters that people have a negative stance towards and tell you to pick up ''gls '' or ''bls' instead, but they won't tell you to pick up a romance if there is a straight pair in a story despite the main genre not being romance.

Queer people are everywhere, they are part of our every day society and thus, their stories and existence belong in every genre as well and should not be limited, which is why I think MarriageToxin can be a small step forward that contributes to more inclusive storytelling and the expansion of queer themes in other genres.

Honestly people aren't ready for a live action Squirrel Girl. They want a mildly quirky sex symbol.

But Squirrel Girl is weird. She's WEIRD weird. She's autistic and barely bothers to hide it. She is very loud and annoying and insanely progressive. Her best friends are all people of color who are extremely opinionated and one of them is trans.

She openly talks smack about Nazis. She's thick as fuck and not just in a comic way she's a big girl. She has a round face and buck teeth. She has no filter. She loves herself.

Squirrel Girl is so much more than just a furry stand in crush and honestly a large majority of the fan base would not like her. She is a GIRLS girl and her best friend writes loki cat fanfiction.

She is cringe and free and too good for this world. IF WE EVER SEE HER IN LIVE ACTION WE WILL DEFEND HER AT EVERY STEP

Everytime a squirrel girl adaptation misrepresents her an angel loses their wings and I lose my fucking mind. She's INCREDIBLY INTELLIGENT and DORKY and WEIRD AND LOVELY AND A FUCKING AMAZING ROLE MODEL AND ALL WE GET IS A JOKE CHARACTER THAT'S ATTRACTIVE IN A CONSUMABLE WAY TO THE LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR.

i just think that in reading kinosaki's gender you have to consider things like her belief that she is going to die, the way she tries to stop gero from getting too invested in a relationship with her, and the way she looked at that photo of her in a wedding dress with gero.

the answer to "why would a trans woman repeatedly call herself a guy" (other than she is a fictional character subject to the biases of the author) is the same reason she would repeatedly cut off a relationship with someone she is clearly in love with. sometimes characters do not sincerely mean the things they say. she makes that face after saying this is all just practice so it doesnt count. shes not exactly forthcoming about her feelings

hi! i think to write believable and complex women you just have to throw away most of what people codify as A Woman, if that makes sense. think of it as you are just writing a Person (who may experience gendered oppression at points because of how this world works). i also dont think about ‘bad representation’ most of the time, i dont think its a productive way to think about stories and characters. instead, i think if you approach writing any minority group with curiosity and humanity instead of fear, that is already more productive than thinking about possible backlash over something that doesnt even truly exist yet.
