when miya was in his first year of elementary school he bit his best friend.
they were playing and miya realized how happy his best friend made him so he leaned over and bit his hand. he didn’t bite hard, but it left a mark and miya swelled with pride at seeing his teeth marks on his friend’s hand. miya thought his friend would be happy, maybe even bite miya back, but instead he started crying and miya had to go sit in the hall. when miya’s mom came to pick him up after school, the teacher pulled her aside and had a talk with her. miya saw them but couldn’t hear them, but even in his early years he could tell that they were talking about him with how much they kept looking back at him.
the next day miya’s friend didn’t talk to him, and his mom sent him to school with a note in his bag that read “no biting!”

about halfway through elementary school, miya started chewing pencils. they had those soft wooden pencils in the classroom, and miya loved the feeling of them under his teeth. the first time the teacher caught him she took the pencil he was using. the second time she caught him she banned him from using classroom pencils and started making him bring his own from home. his mother wasn’t happy about it but she bought miya some pencils and sent him to school. the third, and final, time the teacher caught him she sent him home with a note. before miya got home he opened the note and read it’s contents. it was an explanation to his parents and a step by step guide to make him stop biting his pencils. “rub unsavory flavorings and sauces on the top part of his pencil that miya bites the most. after a few times of tasting things he doesn’t like he should stop.”
miya stood there confused and hurt. his mom wouldn’t go through with this, right?
miya gives his mom the letter when he gets home and the next day when he sits down to do his homework and bites his pencil it tastes like butter. the next time wasabi. garlic after that.
after then miya doesn’t bite his pencils anymore.

when miya goes into his last year of elementary school he’s found a new thing to bite. he’s biting himself. it starts with just his fingers. he’ll chew his thumb while working on homework. he’ll bite his knuckle when reading. maybe even bite his knee if he’s sitting with it pulled to his chest. it starts small, nothing much just a light bite, a little nibble. but then miya can’t stop and he can’t hold back. he’s biting his wrists, his arms, his legs if he can. and his bite is hard, it leaves marks, it makes his skin red and achy. it even draws blood. but miya doesn’t stop, he likes it. he can bite things and not get in trouble. he can control what happens. he can watch his bodies reactions in fascination. it’s amazing, but miya should have known it wouldn’t last.
he’s sitting at the table with his family, eating dinner one night. they make small talk about their days, and miya chimes in, feeling content. silence settles over the table and miya zones out, focused on eating.
a fork clatters onto the table, the sudden noise scaring miya and his father. they both look up to see miya’s mom with a horrified look on her face.
“what is that?” she hisses, pointing to miya’s hand.
he feels his heart stop and his stomach drop. no, miya thinks, no no no!
“it’s- uh, it’s a cut. i skinned my hand skating.” miya replies, hoping his quick thinking lie is enough to answer his mom.
“miya,” she warns.
“it is! it really is!”
“miya. you have one chance to tell me or-“
“fine!” he snaps. “it’s a bite mark. i bit myself!” miya brandishes his finger at her, watching his mom flinch back. “happy?” he snarls.
“oh miya, not again.” his mother sighs. “what are we going to do this time?” she asks turning to miya’s dad, ignoring miya himself.
and with that, miya stops biting himself, the disappointment of his parents weighing down on his shoulders, wringing him out and draining his energy. miya doesn’t bite again.

miya sits in his classroom, staring out the window bored. he’s a first year in middle school. he’s focusing even more on skating. he has great new friends, and even his old ones back. but something is still missing. something is aching in his chest. miya can’t figure out what it is.
miya hasn’t bitten himself, or anything else, in over a year. he’s caught himself also doing it at times but he pulls away when he remembers the look on his mom’s face.
miya catches himself going to bite his thumb a lot lately, but he always stopes himself. all but once that is.
he’s sitting in the skatepark with reki and langa one evening. miya sits on his board catching his breath and taking a drink of water. langa and reki stand a few feet from him laugh and goofing off. they shove at each other playfully, trying to knock each other over. reki manages to push langa off balance and langa accidentally kicks his board away from himself. reki bursts out laughing as langa cases after his board. miya let’s out a chuckle and lifts his thumb to his mouth. his teeth dig into his skin before he realizes what he’s doing.
miya stops, his heart dropping. that was the first time his bit himself in a year. and the first time he’s bit something in front of someone in years.
in front of someone, his mind screams. miya snaps his head up and reki is looking at him.
“you good?” reki asks, noticing miya’s expression.
miya starts to breathe faster and harder, his mind tumbling over itself. reki saw him. reki’s gonna judge him. he’s gonna be in so much trouble. he doesn’t now what to do. it’s getting hard to breathe. he can’t move. he doesn’t know what to do. he can’t-
“miya are you okay?” reki says, dropping to his knees in front of miya, hands places on his shoulders. “are you having a panic attack?”
miya just shoves reki away and steps on his board, pushing himself away and down the street as fast as his legs let him. reki sits on the skatepark ground, head tilted in confusion and face scrunched in concern.

miya paces his room in an storm anxiety. he hugs his arms, nails digging into skin. his teeth dig into his lip, before he catches himself and lets his jaw go slack. miya ignore the notifications from reki on his phone. he ignores his mom’s call for dinner. he ignores his homework. the only think he can think of is how badly he fucked up. he messed up big time. he was clean. he hadn’t bitten in a year. but one slip up and now all that self control is withering away. and to make matters worse he bit himself in front of a close friend. miya knows reki is nice, but everyone always thought his biting was weird, so why would reki be any different. miya was just starting to get his life together. he had friends. good grades. a good relationship with his parents. and now all because of one absentminded bite it’s going down the drain. the small realistic part of his brain cries out that he’s overreacting and over thinking. but the pounding of his heart and the rush of blood in his ears drowns that out.
miya crumples to ground, folding into himself. with his arms wrapped around his legs, and face buried in his legs, miya starts to cry. he can’t do anything but cry.

it’s a few months later and miya is sitting in the skatepark with reki and langa again. after a couple of weeks things smoothed over with reki, but miya never gave an explanation.
langa runs off to grab drinks, and miya tenses, noticing that it’s just him and reki.
reki notices too, and tilts his head, smiling at miya. he walks over to his bag and grabs something from it, before walking over to miya.
“so, i may have misinterpreted why you freaked a couple of months ago.” he starts, fidgeting with the box in his hands. “and if i did, sorry.” reki breaks off with a laugh. “but uh, i wanted you to have these.” he says pressing the box into miya’s hands.
miya takes the box from reki, hands trembling slightly. the mere mention of what happened a few months ago brining anxiety. he opens the box, and stares with confusion.
“it’s some…weird jewelry? thanks?” miya says, picking up one of the things from the box.
reki let’s out a laugh, startling miya. “no its chewlry. you’re kinda right about the jewelry part i guess. anyways it’s jewelry that’s made for you to chew. i saw you biting you thumb and-“ reki stops when he sees miya’s expression.
miya glares at the ground, eyes swimming with tears. his stomach rolls and he feels like his going to be sick. it’s all too much. he’s feeling too much. anger, sadness, anxiety, nausea, and something he can’t name. miya closes the box before handing it back to reki. he takes a breathe before responding.
“i think you should keep these. i’m not allowed to bite things.” miya says, ignoring the aching in his chest.
“that’s stupid,” reki hums, pushing the box back into miya’s hands. his nonchalant attitude scaring miya. “keep it,”
“no, you keep it.” miya tries giving it back again.
“mmh, nope.” reki says, shoving miya the box and standing up out of range for miya to give it back again.
“reki!” miya cries, desperation making its way into his voice.
“i know what it’s like to be told you can’t bite, but i also know what it’s like to be told you can for the first time in a while. it’s okay, miya, take the box.” reki explains, hands shoved in his pockets as he rocks on the balls of his feet.
miya’s hands tighten around the box. “are you sure?” his voice trembles. reki nods as a big smiles breaks out on his face.
miya shakily opens the box and looks through the chewlry. he lifts up a bright green circular one.
“i personally recommend the ones that look like crystals with the swirly lines one the sides. their texture is so funky.” reki pipes up, leaning over miya to look in the box.
miya continues to look through the box, a smile starting to appear on his face. at some point reki sits down next to him.
miya pulls out a purple square one with little cat faces engraved into it and lifted up in lines. he rubs his thumbs over the lines, feeling them under his skin. he tentatively lifts it to his mouth and bites into it. reki watches his reactions and starts freaking out when he notices miya crying.
“ah! oh no! what’s wrong? do you hate it? did i overstep? ah! miya!?” reki starts flapping his hands anxiously.
“n-no,” miya sobs. “i like it. i love it. thank you.” he drops the necklace back into the box. “i missed this.” he says biting into his knuckle.
“oh,” reki’s says with a smile. “i’m glad.” he says reaching over and pulling miya into a hug. the two sit like that for a little while longer.
“ok!” miya cries clapping his hands together and sniffling. he wipes his eyes. “let’s look at these all.” he says before looking into the box once more.
“ooh ok, let’s see. look at that organe one there, yeah that one, it has different textures over it, it’s really fun. and then see that blue one-“
“what are we looking at?” langa asks walking up behind them and setting a hand on reki’s shoulder. miya tenses, getting ready to hide the chewlry. reki just leans into langa’s touch with a smile and grazes his teeth over langa’s hand before kissing it. and with just that miya knows he doesn’t have to hide the box. he doesn’t have to hide his biting. he knows he’ll be okay again one day. and miya feels that void in his chest fill once again.

There’s a knock at their door. “Hey Kenma,” A voice calls. “It’s me Kuroo. Can I come in?”
Kenma groans from his spot on the bed and hopes Kuroo hears and gets the message.
Kuroo opens the door and walks in. He sees the pile of papers covering Kenma’s desk. “One of those days?” he asks, sitting down on the bed.
Kenma just grunts in return.
“Want me to call them?” Kuroo doesn’t even have to say their names and Kenma is already popping their head out from under the blankets, a spark of life returning to his eyes.

“As I was saying, the quality of the soundtrack can impact the entire movie. Like a bad soundtrack on a great movie will just make it an okay movie, but an amazing soundtrack on an okay movie makes a great movie. You know?” Kuroo rambles, his free hand waving around to emphasize his point, the other swirling through Akaashi’s hair.
Akaashi nods, finishing the bread roll he is eating before joining Kuroo in his ramble. Kenma just sits there, wrapped up in a blanket, reaching across Kuroo to play with Akaashi’s hand. Bokuto sits on Kenma’s other side, braiding their hair. He knows his partner is having a bad day, and so to keep himself from being too loud and rambunctious, Bokuto keeps his hands busy by braiding Kenma’s hair. Kenma reaches for a bread roll from the plate on Akaashi’s lap and takes a bite, letting the good food warm his soul. Kenma closes their eyes, feeling fully at peace for the first time in a while, and lets the quiet babble of his partners lull him to sleep.
renga angst fic called “i like to hurt myself (by reading our old texts)“ where langa is moving back to canada and reki and him have a fight just before that about long term long distance dating and they end up breaking up and langa goes back to canada and everyone there thinks he didn’t change bc he’s still all sad but its actually about his ex instead of his dad but they don’t know that bc no one makes an effort to get close to him like reki did and then over in japan reki closes up and become a shell of himself and his old friend tries to reconnect with him and thinks it’s his fault reki is like this bc they haven’t seen each other in years and he left something that reki was so passionate about and reki doesnt want to open up in fear of getting hurt again so his old friend doesn’t know and without langa reki doesn’t go to S much anymore and slowly loses contact with joe, cherry, miya, shadow, etc and eventually quits his job bc it’s not the same without langa and then avoids oka after that then he stops helping his sisters learn to skate and stays in his room and draws away from his family and same thing with langa and his mom thinks it’s her fault for moving them back to canada and causing the break up and she gets upset about it being like oliver all over again and has a breakdown bc she doesn’t know how to help her son and he’s hurting and she’s hurting and across the world a once bubbly bright boy is hurting and so are the people are him and no one knows what to do and reki quits skating and langa quits skating and snowboarding and they both lose their happiness, both from each other and skating, and then everyone’s sad and no one talks and it’s all pain
