In an effort to get started here on Tumblr with civil conversation on some of my interests, i just have a quick question for you. The most commonly cited evidence i hear from people for god is the changes in their own life, and the ultimate requirement is faith in a force behind it. My question is this: How to do defend that sentiment in light of the fact that those two points can be used to defend any religion, so effectively defend none?
Well, I think we need to be careful with the word “evidence for God”. Evidence implies empirical proof, that you can scientifically observe and measure. In that sense, you cannot prove or disprove the existence of God. You can use reason or logic to come to a conclusion to God, you can also use reason or logic to come to a conclusion that there is no God. Reason and logic are tools, not end results, and C.S. Lewis used both reason and imagination to bolster his faith in Christianity. In my view, if you have one without the other, you have a stack-of-cards faith, liable to crumble at the first spiritual drought or dry sermon.
Now, to elaborate on the question I believe you’re getting at—if people of different religions experience changes in their own life, what makes Christianity distinct—I would argue that that should not be the point you defend. Whether a Christian experiences positive or negative changes in their life is immaterial—God didn’t promise the Christian a happy, safe life. He simply promised to be with us during the good and bad times.
If we are going to defend Christianity and argue for Christianity, our best bet is to let our lives reflect our faith. To follow in Christ’s example. St. Francis of Assisi had it right when he said, “Preach the gospel at all times, if necessary, use words.”
Now to defend against the unfortunate academic snobbery that plagues many people who believe in God, the resources you can peruse to support an intelligent faith in God are endless. Alister McGrath, C.S. Lewis, Ravi Zacharias, G.K. Chesterton, all sorts.
Hope that helps.
I applaud the eloquence of the question as well as the answer.
