❛ Uh, I was just kind of in the middle of something here. ❜
❛ Well, maybe I can help. ❜
❛ I think I’m just gonna head home. ❜
❛ Are you all right? You didn’t sleep at all last night. ❜
❛ I got a solid eight minutes, not consecutively, but still. ❜
❛ It’s fine. You’re not even that blurry. ❜
❛ You gotta take it easy, man. I mean, you’re not sleeping. Your eye’s twitching. ❜
❛ Fine, but you need to get some rest. ❜
❛ This morning, you bit into a raw egg like it was an apple. ❜
❛ Thank you so much for getting me home safely. ❜
❛ Try not to fall apart. ❜
❛ Oh, yeah, I thought I recognized you. ❜
❛ You never cared about me. ❜
❛ What’s going on? ❜
❛ I can explain everything. ❜
❛ Just give me one second, okay? ❜
❛ How do we get out of this? ❜
❛ But you’re forgetting one, crucial piece of information right? ❜
❛ So sorry for eternally dooming you. ❜
❛ My brain is melting. ❜
❛ Okay, but, um what the hell is this? ❜
❛ I’m done. ❜
❛ Rule number one I get to do whatever I want, and you all just have to deal with it. ❜
❛ Rule two no more Spider-Man movies. ❜
❛ Rule three everyone leave me alone. ❜
❛ That does not make it easier. ❜
❛ I can’t help you. ❜
❛ You are a good person, NAME. ❜
❛ Sorry, it’s been a weird day. ❜
❛ You put the Peeps in the chili pot and eat them both up ❜
❛ You put the Peeps in the chili pot and it makes it taste bad ❜
❛ I’m gonna eat all this chili and or die trying. ❜
❛ Dip your paws in my chili. ❜
❛ The world is empty. ❜
❛ There is no point to anything, and you’re just gonna die. So do whatever. ❜
❛ And now I’m gonna eat my marshmallow-candy chili in silence, and you all can jump up your own butts. ❜
❛ Who cares? Good-bye. ❜
❛ Feeling all right? ❜
❛ I feel fine. ❜
❛ Um is everything okay other than, you know, everything? ❜
❛ It’s all chili under the bridge. ❜
❛ That’s insane, but it’s also, like the 11th most insane thing to happen today, so who cares? ❜

Yeah I understand schroedingers law, that any closed box could contain either whatever is supposed to be in it, or a dead cat, which is why i don’t go into shoe stores,
Zaneeta hummed happily as she approached home, a skip in her step. Despite parental objections, she had moved in to the Djilas household. With both of Tommy's parents gone, her husband was the head of the house anyway. and it made it easier for Tommy to take care of his younger siblings. She stopped suddenly as her hand reached the door knob. Through the window she could see two men sitting at the dinner table. She hesitated, unsure of what to do.
@yegxds
Tommy stared across the table, trying his hardest to process the apologetic ramble coming from his father. He had shown up and was waiting for Tommy outside when the younger Djilas had run home during his lunch break to pick up more staff paper.
Tommy panicked at the sound of footsteps; his father trailed off at the noise. Tommy jumped to his feet, counting his blessings that his siblings hadn’t come home yet. “Come on in, Zaneeta,” He called, “It’s our home, after all.” He shot a pointed glare towards his father, “My father is visiting.”
“It was longer than it should’ve been, I admit,” The elder Djilas said cautiously, straightening in his seat, “But the train ride was nice. Thank you for asking.”
“Several years longer than it should’ve,” Tommy muttered under his breath, putting the tray down hard on the table. His father winced at the comment, but nodded in silent agreement.
Zaneeta glanced carefully at her husband, formulating a slight plan. She’d try to calm him down slightly before she left to tell the professor that Tommy had fallen ill.
“I do not want to be blunt, as it seems rather rude, but what prompted your visit?” She asked as she poured coffee into each of the three cups with a measured hand.
“I, uh…well,” He cleared his throat as he met his son’s eyes, “I ran into your mother. When I realized that she had left you three, I came back as quick as I could.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Thank you,” He said to Zaneeta as he sheepishly picked up the cup of coffee.
“You never thought to drop by for a visit?” Tommy snapped, “Not once in the past decade? You never thought to make sure we were doing okay? Or send us word? That you were alive? Or told us why you left?” By the last question, he was yelling.
There went her plan. She stood quietly behind her chair, hands resting delicately on the back. There was chaos enough - any additional movement felt like testing fate. She watched in silence.
Her husband’s anger scared her. She was not afraid for herself or even for his father, but this rage reminded her so clearly of what she had seen in Tommy before. When he had returned from the war, and even earlier when his father had left or his mother had left Tommy’s siblings in tears. She held her breath as she looked to the senior Djilas for his response.
David shrunk slightly as he watched his boy, a man now. His toes curled in his shoes. “Tommy...” He said, as if testing the waters. Tommy resisted the urge to snap at him as he listened to his father.
“I will never be able to fully apologize or make it up to you...but I’d like to try. You know I don’t believe in passing the blame, but your mother...she and I thought it best that I wasn’t a parent.”
Tommy bit the inside of his cheek. He had a million possible retorts. None of them felt right. He didn’t know words for his anger. “That’s a bunch of talk, pa. What do you want?”
i already knew a woodpecker’s tongue wraps around its skull when retracted but just now learned that the reason for that is to provide cushioning from the impacts of wood pecking. what the fuck. imagine your tongue being a shock absorber
i wish i was kidding
Tommy leaned against the locker neighboring Zaneeta's with as suave a smile as a boy his age could manage, crossing his arms as he did so. "Hey," He said, "How were classes?" And then, before she could respond, as if he had just remembered it casually, "I heard dance practice got canceled."
@greathonk
A blushing smile bloomed across her face as Tommy appeared in her periphery. “Classes were fine, thank you for asking,” The hint of a laugh laced her response as she neatly withdrew items from her bag to trade them with others waiting in her locker. “And yes, you are correct, practice was canceled tonight. As a member of the team, I get updated on relevant information,” She raised a brow as she closed her locker, “But thank you for making sure that I knew.” As she said this she shut the lock on the door. She knew that wasn’t why he had brought it up and she watched him expectantly.
“Roll advantage?” Zaneeta asked, forehead delicately wrinkling like tissue paper as she looked back at Tommy. “Does the Djilas family have a game night or a gambling ring?” The first option was the idea she had as to what could be going on, the second was merely a nervous joke. She sucked in her lower lip slightly, hoping that the humor had come across.
“It’s not any game night! It’s Dungeons & Dragons!” Ruth corrected proudly. Joey winced slightly, and Tommy all but died from embarrassment right there in the hallway.
Ruth looked expectantly at the three in front of her for some form of response. She turned to Zaneeta and explained, “The game takes a really long time to play, so we need to go home and get our work done as quickly as possible. All of my homework is done, but Joey still has a math worksheet to do.”
Zaneeta looked from face to face quickly. She knew nothing about the game except its reputation. The fact that Tommy played was unexpected. “Thank you, Ruth,” She said, distracted by Tommy’s reaction. “Are you alright?”
“I’m fine,” He choked out.
“I hope so!” Ruth said sternly, “If not then how will we ever get out of the enchanted fairy forest?”
If Tommy had answered honestly, it wasn’t true anymore. “I can explain,” He said hoarsely, “It’s a part of the game.” He shot a look of daggers at his younger sister.
❝I can’t stop shivering.❞ @yegxds
@yegxds
“You may be coming down with something,” Tom frowned, grabbing a blanket from the cabinet. He draped it over his wife’s shoulders, sitting next to her on the bed and holding her tightly, “Is it just shivering? Anything else?”
“That’s what you eat during Passover, isn’t it?” She asked quietly as she relished the feeling of his fingers in her hair.
“No, that’s matzo,” He said with a hesitant smile. “Matzo ball soup is, uh...” He blew out a long breath, “It’s the best soup. A cure all.”
i think reading together is one of the loveliest things two people can do. reading out loud to each other, or reading two different books while lounging on the floor seems so dreamy.

Followers, what is your favorite Yiddish song? Favorite Ladino song?
-PJ
Some of my favorite Ladino songs are
A La Una Yo Nací: https://youtu.be/ab0Wj0g2YL0
Nana de Salonica: https://youtu.be/cxTTVfrOaN4
and my favorite Yiddish song is Yankele: https://youtu.be/-5hse_pVIgw
oh and this is probably my favorite version of Chad Gadya: https://youtu.be/CVGnOqO9A8g
I also really like ‘Tumbaleika’!
And it’s kind of cliché but the lullaby ‘Durme Durme’ is my favorite Ladino song; it’s just so lovely.
I LIVE FOR THESE POSTS!!!
And now I feel like I have to contribute. It’s not actually in Yiddish, but your Chad Gadya reminded me that I also have a favorite Chad Gadya. Moishe Oysher z”l, widely considered to be one of the most entertaining chazzanim, did a really fun version. I’d also recommend looking for a video version, because they can get pretty silly.
