Jude isn’t Balekin’s murderer; she is the fulfilment of his curse.

okay, so hear me out. i’ve been seeing a lot of people stressed that Jude betrayed Cardan’s one request to not murder Balekin, and i have come to testify on her behalf. 

i don’t know if anyone has said this already, but i’ve been rereading TFOTA- as one does when the stress of life compels them- and something clicked this time through that didn’t click with me before.

I. The Crown’s Curse

in chapter 17 of The Cruel Prince, Jude asks Dulcamara in a lecture what would happen if someone tried to steal the crown instead of having it placed upon their head by another in Mab’s bloodline. this is Dulcamara'a response:

“The crown is cursed so that a murder of its wearer causes the death of the person responsible.” (p. 175, TCP)

Jude basically is just like “huh. interesting.” and goes on with her day. but three chapters later, in chapter 20 (otherwise known as the Death chapter), Eldred takes the crown off his head.

I never understood why Cardan called Jude a liar when she fell from the rafters. What do you think he meant?

in chapter 13 of QON, Roach is shot by a dart laced with Deathsweet. Cardan says his pocket is full of ragwort and that they should fly back to Elfhame at once.

but Jude refuses. she says that her sisters are waiting for her at the edge of the camp and if she does not go to them and tell them what happened, they will be caught. Cardan gives her his cloak, which is supposedly also a shield, and tells her not to stop until she gets to her sisters.

Cardan leaves with Roach in his arms, and then we get this lovely little tidbit from Jude:

"I said I was going straight to Vivi, but I lied. I head for the cave." (QON, chapter 13)

she uses the Roach's poisoning as a distraction to try and save the Ghost from captivity. this results in her running into Madoc, duelling him, getting stabbed, and barely making it back to Elfhame alive. then subsequently being mistaken for an assassin, who she said would be at the palace but wasn't, and being shot down.

when Jude falls from the rafters, Cardan is furious with her. not only because she lied to him, but because that lie resulted in a whole bunch of confusion, and not one, but two near-fatal events for her. he's basically saying, "you're a mess and if you had just done what i asked, what you said you would do, we wouldn't be in this predicament".

I LOVED how Cardan loses his mind when she falls injured. First, he loses her to the sea, gets her back, finally gets her to marry him, only to have to send her to the human realm the next day. Then he thinks he loses her to the human realm because she is not coming back or answering his letters. Then when he thinks she is FINALLY back she is immediately taken by (or runs away with, he can't be 100% sure) Murdock. By that time he is absolutely desperate and goes to the human realm only to find her sisters and no Jude. When he puts his life on the line to save her, she just. won't. go. with. him. He finally gets a promise from her only for her to break it and get stabbed. Then when she finally does come back, it is secretly and he has to watch his "fragile" mortal fall possibly to her death. He is absolutely done and I love it.

honestly, he deserved to go absolutely feral. the fact that he just calls her a "dirty, mortal liar" and sends her to the Royal Chambers to be healed like he's putting his wayward child in timeout shows so much restraint on his part.

me, as one of Cardan's bros: homie, Jude has intentionally deceived you so many times, and she obviously doesn't trust you when you have proven yourself willing to trust her to a fault. why aren't you more angry with her.
