Green Clean Institute In The News
Microfiber Cleaning Advantages
This past week I was working with a client exploring the benefits of microfiber cleaning tools and the hardware which goes with them. One such item we were looking at was the “Double Bucket” system which we talk about in the “GCIC-Technician” and “Understanding Microfiber” courses.
Understanding Microfiber Cleaning Tools
At the Green Clean Institute, we are focused on the results of cleaning and the best ways to achieve these results. Our motto is “Not How To Clean, But Why We Clean.” This also includes whether the tools we use are effective or not.

This has been a busy week for certifications at GCI. While I can't feature every person, operation, school or business one stands out this week as being the first such certification for GCI.
As I write this, it is April 1, but this is no April fool’s joke. Green cleaning and safe chemicals are being required by more and more individuals. Last week, I testified at the Missouri State Capital during a hearing on the Missouri Green Cleaning Law. This week I was interviewed by Contracting Profits magazine on the need for ingredient disclosure mandates. As a result of the testimony I gave to several House of Representatives, I will be back again this week talking to Representative Margo McNeil, seen in the picture here, informing her on some of the finer points of the healthy reasons for Green Cleaning. HB1602 sponsor, Zachary Wyatt and co-sponsor Ms. McNeil are looking for information as to who and how schools are moving to implement Green Cleaning into mainstream practices since the “Missouri Green Law” is voluntary. Unfortunately after hearing testimony from Ralph Bicknese, seen in the picture, it would appear that since it is not mandated it has not been widely accepted. On the other hand, this focuses more attention on the ones who are “Proving Up” their commitment to not only embracing the law, but being ahead of the curve; schools like New Franklin Rl and Rolla Public Schools, both of which have earned the Green Clean Schools certification from GCI. As the month of March came to a close the interview with Contracting Profits was interesting as there are 13 states currently considering legislation to identify and reduce exposures to chemicals of concern. In this interview I spoke to the need to have other issues also a part of this legislation such as the need to have standardization of the labeling and MSDS for all individuals to be able to comprehend not only the ingredients, but their exposure concerns. When the full article comes out, I will pass along the link. All of this action brings me to this point. The GCI courses and certifications which individuals and organizations are earning, is evidence of the proactive move to improve our way of life while doing our jobs to the best of our ability. Improving the indoor air of the existing built environments through healthy cleaning is truly what this is all about. I congratulate the 4 new Firms, and 6 renewing Firms who brought with them the over 100 new GCI certified individuals for the month of March. Find a GCIC firm or individual at www.GreenJanitor.net, where you will find one of the newest individuals to earn certification in Lagos, Nigeria-Africa; or contact us to get yourself or your Firm identified so that I can point to your success when visiting with interested parties. Have a wonderful April. Regards, David Thompson
Good morning to everyone. The first day of spring has come and here in central Missouri it came early. I had to mow my grass this week and will be dealing with that green pollen on my car in the coming weeks ahead. If you are a sufferer of allergies, this can be a very rough time for you and me. How we clean within the built environments will be even more impactful during the next 6 weeks for many. Last week I had the pleasure of being involved in a LEED Gold presentation for only the 3 rd hospital to reach such a distinction. I am told this was only the 6th LEED certified building in Columbia, Missouri where GCI is a chamber member. It made me think about what has happened within GCI over the past 6 months since stepping up and becoming president. Since September of 2011, there have been nearly 800 new individuals certified, 100 new certified Firms and some 150 have renewed their certification, all of which is adding to the GCI network strength. It is individuals who make up a team, a network of people impacting the indoor environments of the buildings we inhabit. Whether they are LEED certified or not, new or existing, it is this army of certified individuals throughout the world who are leading the Green and Healthy challenge. The latest Firm to join the network is UBM in Kansas City, Kansas I would personally like to thank you all and encourage you to check to see if you're one of these Firms or individuals listed on our Green Janitor site www.GreenJanitor.net. You see, I receive requests as to who can provide services in an area all the time and this is where I send those looking for certified individuals and/or organizations. As awareness is growing through our efforts, so is the reach of GCI. We encourage you to continue to be a part of the program and start adding up your points on the 180 Assessment program, www.180Assessment.com as some operations are already surging ahead to be recognized in 2013.
As we all work to close out our first quarter of 2012, I want to highlight a local company in St. Louis, Missouri who instead of pulling back in these rough times, is moving forward with education of its clients. Seen here is the first educational class held in the New System education room which now sports a new Smart Board complete with built in sound. Technology has come to the janitorial profession and education has come to the fingertips of the clients of New System. I had the pleasure of being the first instructor to present in the classroom and the sales staff at New System, a Pro-Link distributor, is the first graduating class of GCIC-DR individuals in the world. This new certification class is bringing our custodial education to the distribution part of the Green Supply chain. Those individuals and Firms, who are GCI Certified, are now able to find a GCI Certified distributor to purchase from, thus adding to the stability of their Green and Healthy purchasing supply chain. Soon we will be able to announce a manufacture who is “Proving Up”, as New System has, by not just talking, but stepping up and being a part of the GCI network of like minded individuals and businesses around the world. If you are in Missouri or Illinois, get in contact with New System and see how they can help you on your journey to Green your Cleaning. If you are a distributor or know of one who wants to be on the cutting edge of education within your community on the "Why’s" of Green Cleaning, see our Distributor pageand see where you might fit into the GCI network today.
I am Christopher Headrick custodial Supervisor of Rolla Public Schools. I have been a school custodian for 23 years, of which twenty one of those years have been spent as a Lead custodian. Rolla Public Schools has been cleaning for health for 18 of those years, long before Green was even a part of a custodian's vocabulary. In 2008 I was involved with the Missouri Association of Rural Education Custodial Workshops held throughout Missouri and even did some custodial auditing for a few school districts around my area. I was a panelist for a Green symposium in St. Louis, Missouri in 2009. Within our district, at the request of teachers, I have even spoken to several of our science classes about our program and equipment used. This has resulted in several interviews for articles in our school newspaper. I have seen many ideas and changes in our industry over those years which have led me to better my professional development. In 2011, I earned certification by the Green Clean Institute, being the first Certified Executive in a K-12 school setting in the nation and while having maintained this certification for a second year, continue to enhance our Green Clean program for the Rolla School District. This spring, our entire custodial staff will be working to earn their GCIC-Technician status. Over the years I have gathered much data, all of which has been key in changing many of our policies and procedures. This includes Green purchasing, savings to the districts custodial budget, ATP metering and equipment repairs; all while also being challenged with training staff on new healthy procedures. While I have a good solid program, change starts with and is not possible without employees willingness to embrace the change and learn. This is where the GCI certification benefits our program so well. It gives employees the tools and ability to feel professional in their job and the changes they have made. Our district goals are currently on track to certify all our custodial staff and seek Green Clean Schools Firm status. We also hope in the near future to make our High School an Audited Green Janitorial Firm location. I feel that the GCI educational courses are great tools to expand and continue what was started years ago. There is truly nothing else out there currently that compares in providing my frontline workers the professional staff development required to truly complete a healthy cleaning program like ours. I currently filled out my 180 assessment and just really was able to see where we are and where we need to go using this international standard. One of the main positive directions was in our purchasing from vendors. I really was tired of having to go through every little detail with every vendor to get them to realize the importance of our program and goals, most just didn't understand. I also have a real problem with vendors just showing up unannounced wanting to discuss selling items. This is when I started looking at RFP’s and realized I could utilize a letter and accomplish many things other than just purchasing what it was originally for. This document, which has drawn up and is used by individual school secretaries when first approached by entries into our facilities including our administration offices, is handed to all vendor individuals. It is very detailed and states the districts full intention of our program and what we expect from the vendors we do business with. This includes our bid items and contract items. It also states the Missouri statues which we base our program on. This gives the vendor up front information and allows them to decide if they can measure up, so as not to be a waste of our districts time and resources. It also includes all contact information they might need to do business with them. It is my belief that if you encourage good business that is what you will receive. I plan to continue to use the 180 Assessment program from GCI to further strengthen our program for the benefit our students, staff and public using our facilities. Chris Headrick GGIC-EXEC One of the goals for Green Clean Institute is to highlight the success of those certified through our programs. This week, Christopher Headrick, GCI Certified Executive gives his story of what his certification has done for him and his program. I look forward to your comments. David Thompson
I have been a part of theMissouri Association of Rural Education for 7 years. During this time, I have instructed the MARE Custodial Workshops throughout Missouri. This past week I had the pleasure of working with three member school districts to present the case for Green Cleaning to the annual MARE Conference. This 3 day meeting is attended by superintendents and board members representing districts throughout the state. The presentation, I Can't Breathe-Reducing the Impacts, can be viewed in its entirety here on the GCI YouTube channel. During the presentation, representatives from Crawford Co R-1, Columbia Public Schools and New Franklin R-1 describe the changes they have made over the last 4-5 years that have resulted in positive impacts on the health of the indoor environments of their districts. These panelists represented districts from 400 students to 17,000 students, however in all cases, their efforts toward cleaning with a Green and Healthy focus, have impacted more than 1/3 of the individuals in their communities’. All without having a negative impact to operating budgets. GCI and the 180Assessment program can help your organization attain the same positive impact as these individuals, schools, cities and communities realize every day. It's your move and takes nothing more than taking the first step to protect your personal health through education.
I had the pleasure of being invited to participate in a “Career Day” at Gentry Middle School in Columbia, Missouri this past month. Every year the Columbia Chamber of Commercesponsors this day at the area middle schools and looks to the chamber membership to participate. It was a great experience for me, and the 7th graders there were very much into the complete event. This was a chance for me to enlighten these young minds as to the true reason a custodian is in a school, to protect their health. During two different twenty minute sessions the class was able to look at what it takes to be a custodian of health in a school, we used an ATP meter to show the true results of cleaning and got a chance to work with Skype to London, England and chatted with Des Fulcher of NICE, LTD. We used the Activeion Ionator to show how you can use water and electricity to explode microbes in order to produce a surface which is safe to touch. During the presentation they were able to see the reduction of ATP from 238 to 8 using these modern cleaning devices and testing methods, both of which many individuals in the cleaning industry themselves have not seen. The teachers there were impressed as were the students. Here at the Green Clean Institute we recognize that education is a continual issue, and while many in the cleaning industry do not believe education is necessary, we find it viable every day for all ages. This great class of 7th graders where very attentive and polite and had very good questions to ask. If you ever get the chance to explain what you do, why you do it and what effect you have; do it by going to your local school and participating. Remember, these youngsters just may be the ones taking care of you later in life! This year, the GCI focus is all about YOU! You are the one who can make an impact on the community you live, work and play in. Are you doing your part? Thanks to the chamber, Gentry Middle School and these students, I enjoyed my first “Career Day” and am looking forward to the next one
At the Green Clean Institute, we are constantly asked to assist businesses find their Green when it comes to cleaning. Just like many others, I have struggled when providing the “short answer to the long question." Not anymore. I am proud to introduce the 180 Assessment Program. This self assessment is an interactive check sheet awarding points for green attributes which an individual can identify as they walk through their existing indoor environments. Whether you are a building service contractor, in-house operation, distributor rep for a janitor supply house or manufactures rep of cleaning products, this form is designed to help you identify Green attributes of everything from the entrance mats at the front door to the type of mop sink in the janitor's closet. Register your points for having a CRI certified HEPA vacuum and even more points for the numbers of individuals in the custodial operations whom are GCIC Technicians. All of this is to help an organization tally up points toward a creditable Green Clean operation. The goal of the 180 Assessment to provide a self designed road map to an operations own level of Green, guided by your individual budget and capabilities of your operation. It is completely flexible and will culminate in an Audited Green Janitorial Certification of the operation. In this way, GCI can transparently verify that an operation has used the GCI education, applied it through Green practices and is now a certifiable Green and healthy operation. Prove that your operation is truly having a positive effect on the existing indoor environment, providing healthier conditions for staff, visitors and occupants. For about the price of a case of toilet tissue, an organization can now obtain this one of a kind assessment, customizable for their operation. In an age of greenwashing and market manipulation, your organization can stand out as a creditable Green janitorial operation. Make no mistake; credentials will be one of your best assets as more and more companies are asked to “Prove Up”. Visit www.180assessment.com and register to get your form today and start working your way to a verifiable Green Janitorial Certification. Be the one proving you are Green and doing your part to be a positive impact on your operations health.
