I’ve been speaking with Laila @lailashaqoura and she has asked me to help spread her family’s campaigns. Both of these campaigns are vetted and verified. The first campaign is for her immediate family, while the second is for her aunt and her extended family, which her cousin Tala @talanassar has been helping to spread. Their fundraisers have been progressing slowly but surely, but that isn’t fast enough. They’re currently only at about 10% of their goal. I’ve seen people do great work to help raise lots of money in a short amount of time when gofundme threatened to shut down a fundraiser. I would say we shouldn’t wait until it’s too late to rush a fundraiser to it’s goal, but the truth is, we already have. Laila sits in her tent as the tanks draw closer and the guns grow louder, and every day Israel drops missiles on the encampment of tents they once called a safe zone. Time has run up, and we have to hurry to do everything we can in order to help Laila and her family escape Gaza. Laila’s mother is pregnant and struggling heavily, and her aunt is battling cancer on top of a genocide. They need all they help you can offer. If you have anything to donate at all, a dollar, less than a dollar, donate it, if you have anything at all to cut out of your life, coffee treats you buy every day, video games you were planning to get, please consider cutting it out and donating or at least matching it and donating to the victims of the genocide that your tax dollars perpetuate. It enrages me everytime it dawns on me that there is no graduating class in Gaza this year.

How maddening it is to think that just last summer I watched as Al-Shaima Akram celebrated received the news that she got the highest score in all of Palestine in her high school examination, not knowing that come October, Israel will kill her and her family and all the joy that was left.

No tawjihi celebration videos will come out of Gaza this year and that is devastating.

Since October, Israel had destroyed every university in Gaza and destroyed 80% of schools, killing hundreds of teachers and professor and thousands of students in its deliberate attempt to destroy Gaza's education system along with everything else.

In the words of Gazan poet Khaled Juma "the school year that never started in Gaza has come to an end". No last day of school bells, no kids celebrating the last day of school. All these joyful sounds have been drowned out by the sounds of bombs. No deadline extension requests for final projects, missiles had their final say.

No graduation ceremonies when parents are instead burying their children. No plans are made for the summer either, when everyone is busy counting the days and the dead.

I say this with a lot of frustration because you cannot mistake how deliberate this is, knowing how important education is for Palestinians. It's the one thing we know that even if Israel tries to kill us off, you cannot kill our ideas.

This is why Palestinians in Gaza have opened temporary schools and got innovative with prioritising education while trying to survive, like Noor's moving school initiative and many many makeshift schools that have been set up in displacement camps.

Afterall, try as you might but you cannot defeat a people whose graduate students are defending their thesis in displacement tents during genocide.

This is very urgent so please share however you can. Islam, the mom of this family in Gaza, is eight months pregnant but has a fractured pelvis and therefore cannot give birth safely. She needs a C-section, but the conditions to perform those no longer exist in Gaza. For months women in Gaza have been getting C-sections without anaesthesia. We need to get her out before she goes into labor, which could happen at any time now. We're halfway through the goal and even if everyone just chipped in 5-10 dollars it adds up quick!

there is something horrifically grim to it, but illustrations for gaza and palestinians tend to catch more mass attention that actual photos of people. this made me feel incredibly helpless for a long while, seeing both how people would rather look at a neat drawing of red black green and white than look a human in the eyes, and how online platforms would rather push a viral drawing while suppressing those begging for help at the same time.

a way to cope with this feeling has been taking advantage of it to directly guide people to helping palestinians.

if art gets better traction, then there’s an incredible amount of good that can be done by creating art that immediately links to fundraisers. creating art of the many images of those who are asking for help.

within hours of posting my drawing, there has been jumps in the thousands for bashar from gaza’s fundraiser. it’s a small effort in the grand scheme of things. it’s not a fix it. but it’s something good. please take care of each other and do what you can. i think this could help a lot of people if a lot of people did it.

Our house in Gaza was bombed, we escaped to #Rafah, and now Rafah is being evacuated, and my mother lives on the sand without shelter, not even a tent 😭😭
