jar from the farmer’s market !!
keep seeing undergrads on social media saying “oh if a prof has a strict no-AI academic integrity policy that’s a red flag for me because that means they don’t know how to design assignments” like sorry girl but that just sounds like you’ve got a case of sour grapes about not being allowed to cheat with the plagiarism machine that doesn’t know how to evaluate sources and kills the environment! I have a strict no-AI policy because if you use AI to write your essays for a writing course it’s literally plagiarism because you didn’t write it and you’re not learning any of the things the course teaches if you just plug a prompt into the plagiarism generator that kills the environment, hope this helps!
How to get out of feeling sluggish
Lately I’ve been struggling with a weird brain fog and general tiredness. This often turns into laziness which makes me feel really crappy. So today I wanted to share the things I do to get back on track or to feel a bit refreshed at least:
Take a shower -No matter whether you do or don’t feel dirty, this should be your first step. The fresh smell of soap and washing away the tiredness/laziness feels amazing
Open the window -At least for a moment because fresh air brings energy
Change your sheets and towels -This one isn’t absolutely necessary however fresh sheets and towels feel great and almost make things feel new
Clean up your space and make the bed -These tasks aren’t overly complicated and they set you into productive mood. Plus organised and cleaned space helps you feel more put together
Move your body -When I’m in a slump it’s usually accompanied by an odd body stiffness, so let’s get rid off that one!
Make an exciting to do list -Easier said than done, I know… But try to add something that you like doing or gets you closer to your goals. It also never hurts to look up some inspiring people or even aesthetics
Upbeat music -Listening to quick paced and upbeat often helps me feel a bit more excited to live my life
Prepare for the next day -To avoid falling back to feeling lazy the next day, prepare your clothes, room and to-do list for the upcoming day!
Rest is productive
and so is self care
I often feel guilty for resting and sleeping in. Especially when it’s me lying down just staring off to space. What helps me with these feelings is realising that resting is a productive way to spend time.
If you don’t give your body what it needs, it will take it. If you don’t rest? Your body will shut down and you’ll be forced to rest. Same goes for sleep and pretty much anything else.
In order to achieve your goals and stay happy, you have to rest enough. Therefore resting itself is the best thing you can do to properly get where you want to be.
Honestly, I don’t like the idea of everything having to be productive very much. But this little change of approach helps me ease the feelings of guilt
some advice for students who are beginning to show signs of mental illness, especially those in rigorous courses: please don’t ignore your mental health for the sake of your studies. please don’t assume that you’ll ‘push through’ until you achieve x goal and then you’ll pay some heed to your state.
there is a huge chance that you will get so ill you won’t be able to study as much as you need to. there is a huge chance that x goal you’re prioritizing over your health will never be accomplished because of this one decision you’re making.
there is also a small chance that if you seek help, you might find it. that if you take action now, you won’t be in a terrible state later.
try to seek help, please. see a school counsellor, ask for therapy, talk to people online, talk to fellow struggling peers, do something.
i wish i had.
listen to your body. understand it’s warning signs. you are your own most important caretaker. and one of the hardest, but most crucial tasks, is knowing when to stop. when to rest, and heal. you’ve earned it, believe me.

mental health tips i wish i’d been given before starting university
trying is much more important than succeeding
10 minutes of studying > not studying at all
being a college student is more than academics. it’s also learning how to enjoy your own company, learning and occasionally screwing up meals, wandering outside campus like a tourist, questioning your ideals and presuppositions, discovering new talents and skills for the hell of it, and SO much more. if you feel burnt out in one dimension of college life, that’s a sign to spend some time relishing in another dimension.
if you need more time, take a deep breath and shoot that email to your professor/TA asking for an extension. at worst, they say no. and don’t stress over properly explaining yourself/your situation. hell, just email them: “Hi, Professor. I need your help. Sincerely, y/n.” all it takes is that one initial reach out and the rest will follow.
failure does not reflect character. read that again. remind yourself as often as you see fit because at one point or another, you will feel like you’ve failed. it’s growing pains. once you’ve accepted that, learn to view any setbacks as a hint that you need to try a new method/approach. didn’t do well on that math quiz? don’t beat yourself up over it–instead, regroup with yourself and see which metaphorical gear got stuck in your personal learning process machine. for instance, maybe you used flash cards and that wasn’t really your style. act like a detective, not a bully.
THERE IS NO NORMAL TIMELINE FOR YOUR COLLEGE CAREER(!!!!!!). a lot of people need more than 4 years, a lot of people need 4 years, and a lot of people need less than 4 years. and every single one of those timelines are valid. the worst thing you could do is squeeze the living hell out of yourself into some rigid schedule that is incompatible with who you are and how you learn. trust me when i say u will find yourself doing the best work when u do it at YOUR pace.
Love the way I went “Hmm, do I need anything for my upcoming classes?” and then I sort my notebooks and I find like almost a dozen empty ones.
The rector of my university announcing that recordings of lectures will be maximally available to reassure people who don’t feel fully comfortable with full occupation of the lecture halls versus half my classes announcing weblectures will only be available to students who have overlapping classes: FIGHT
Me submitting my 5 page paper anyway
Okay but tad cooper actually became a dragon
