Why does it seem like RWDE simultaneously hates Jaune with a burning passion but also wants him to be the main character?
well you see they hate Jaune because they hate Miles and like to paint Jaune as Miles's self-insert
they want Jaune to be the main character because he's the only white guy in the main cast and they use him as their self-insert as the protagonist of the harem anime they think the show ought to be

I think it really says something about the proliferation of trashy Jaune x harem fanfic (and the frustration thereof) that this post has received more reblogs and likes than the actual posts about my fanfic that I specifically made this blog for.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I'm not the only one who's salty about this, but dang.
If we consider the Red Trailer canon, then considering
The later explanation that Grimm are drawn to negativity
The interpretation that "red like roses fills my dreams and brings me to the place you rest" is about Ruby dreaming about the night Summer disappeared and that being why she visits Summer's grave
That means Ruby had a dream about her missing mom's disappearance - the missing mom who she's always following in the footsteps of - and visited said missing mom's grave, and afterwards was feeling enough negative emotion to attract dozens of Beowolves to her location
Which, though it probably wasn't the case originally, retroactively makes the Red Trailer the earliest indication that Ruby might not be completely okay

Specifically like the deep and coolest stuff you can think of, any deep analysis’s or character arc nonsense or anything cool like that this isn’t malicious i genuinely want to know!

You know, it really says something about me that three separate people have sent this post my way.
Before I get to the actually deep stuff, I'm going to get the comparatively shallow stuff out of the way - the show is absolutely right in its insistence that their aesthetics go well together, and for me personally, WhiteRose is appealing because half my personality is a lot like Ruby and the other half is a lot like Weiss. As for the deeper stuff, there's a lot to talk about (even skipping the Symbolism and the Parallels, because as fond as I am of those, they have more to do with why I think it's actually gonna happen), from the relationship they have now to how that relationship developed and how they developed with it, so... putting the rest under a readmore
Oh, I'm also going to link this really good essay by Edgy-Kiid, which I'm pretty sure was written just after Volume 7 but comes pretty close to predicting Ruby and Weiss's Volume 9 story

With that said, on with the post
1. The Relationship Arc / Beacon Era
This is where it all starts, where the relationship between Ruby and Weiss develops from its adversarial start into the deep and strong bond they have for the rest of the show, and it's a development that is very fun to watch, as is the role that plays in their character arcs
There are 4 major steps in Weiss's Volume 1 character arc:
Going back to Ruby in The Emerald Forest
Admitting her own faults and offering to be nicer in Players And Pieces
The coffee scene in The Badge And Burden
Deciding she doesn't care about Blake's past or species in Black And White
Three out of four of those were about Ruby. Ruby essentially acts as a catalyst for Weiss's character development... which makes sense since Ruby is both willing to apologize when appropriate / offer to start over, and willing to stand up for herself when Weiss goes too far, which is exactly what Weiss needs at that point
And while it's easier to miss, Ruby also has a Volume 1 character arc and it's one that is influencdd by Weiss: for the first 8 episodes, Ruby is determined to do everything either alone or with just Yang by her side, and while she makes some tentative steps away from that with Jaune and Blake, she only really breaks out of that mindset after Weiss saves Ruby from the Deathstalker, offers to be nicer to Ruby, and tells Ruby she doesn't need to prove to Weiss that she can do this
(Also, when Ruby is thinking about who she could partner with if not Yang, she considers but dismisses Jaune because she doesn't think he'd be good in a fight, and Blake because she doesn't think she'd be able to hold a conversation... and then immediately runs into Weiss, who despite her lack of field experience is very good in a fight, and while they're mostly arguments at first, Ruby and Weiss have no trouble holding a conversation)
By the end of Volume 1 they've got a fairly solid foundation to their partnership, which grows stronger in Volume 2 - Weiss still expresses doubt in Ruby on occasion but that seems to stop entirely partway through the Mountain Glen arc - and by Volume 3 the deep and strong bond they have for the rest of the show has fully formed
And then the Fall of Beacon happens, and for one and a half Volumes, Ruby and Weiss are nowhere near each other - and after the reunion at Haven, there's a lot more open displays of affection between them than there were previously (especially on Weiss's end), with another increase after the Battle of Haven. That to me signals that their separation made them realize how much they mean to each other. Which brings me to...
2. Bonds of Trust and Loyalty
I've talked about how Ruby and Weiss's development developed, but another part of WhiteRose's appeal is what that relationship is actually like, and I've already alluded to part of that - the level of trust they have in each other
Arguably this is something that starts in Volume 2, maybe earlier, but the first definitive example comes up in Volume 3 during the Fall Of Beacon, when we see two exchanges where Weiss demonstrates unquestioning faith in Ruby:
Ruby: "I have a plan."
Weiss: "You always do."
and later, when Ruby's about to go up that tower
Weiss: "You can do this."
There's also some good moments earlier in Volume 3 demonstrating how close they've become - the meeting with Winter comes to mind.
And we see more of this in Volume 6, once we've gotten past the reunion and downtime at Haven. Volume 6 also shows us that this unconditional trust goes both ways - Ruby does not question at all that Weiss would catch her (and speaking of that, the fact that Weiss does always catch Ruby is another recurring thing I like about WhiteRose) - and the scene when they're all in the Void after Ruby asks Jinn what Ozpin's hiding is one of the earliest examples of what becomes a fairly consistent thing - in times of fear or uncertainty, Ruby and Weiss look to each other first (the Prince's Game scene in Volume 9 is another fun example of that)
That loyalty also fits with Weiss being Ruby's knight, and I'm going to refer back to that linked essay at this point because frankly Edgy-Kiid hits on a lot of the same points I'm thinking of right now
And speaking of that essay, I'm now going to move on to the third and final section...
3. The Winter of WhiteRose
Edgy-Kiid's essay compares the development of Ruby and Weiss's relationship to the changing of the seasons, with the Beacon Era as their summer and the Anima Era as their autumn, with predictions about their winter and spring. The essay was written after Volume 7 but before Volume 8, but while one part of it turned out differently - this being the one time Weiss actually doesn't catch Ruby when she falls, first literally in the Volume 8 finale then metaphorically in Perils - Volume 9 is still a very good match for the WhiteRose Winter Edgy-Kiid predicted
There's a lot going on in Volume 9 so it's easy to miss what's going on with Ruby and Weiss specifically, but going on something is. I would consider Volume 9 to be their lowest point since Volume 1, but yet the show makes a point of consistently reminding us that even here, in the Volume about everyone else overlooking Ruby's feelings while Ruby spirals, that Weiss still cares for Ruby. We get similar reminders with Yang and Blake, but Weiss is the one who seems to get those the most. Ruby and Weiss had grown more distant during the Atlas Arc (although I think the size of that distance has been a bit exaggerated) and going into Volume 9 that gulf widens, with a disconnect between them that leads to moments like their conversation in Altercation where each tries to comfort the other but they just end up hurting each other instead. Still, Weiss is the one to notice Ruby staying behind and come back for her, and... well, I've posted before about my theory that Weiss is the first to notice Ruby's not okay (still in the same episode as Ruby's breakdown, but significantly earlier in that episode) and that she does make an attempt to help Ruby... but is wrong about what the actual problem is
But then, after Ruby's breakdown, Weiss is the one to correctly identify why Ruby kept everything inside. Weiss is repeatedly shown leading the search for Ruby. In Tale Involving A Tree, Weiss is doing exactly what Ruby's usually the one to do - exactly what Ruby mentioned in her breakdown, asking why it always falls to her to do those things - of picking the others up, knowing the right thing to say, keeping everyone moving forward. Once they've found Ruby, Weiss is the one to say out loud that the rest is up to Ruby and whatever happens next, they have to welcome that. Weiss is the first one we see react to Ruby's return, and the one who has the most outwardly joyful reaction
I like to call Ruby and Weiss's Volume 9 storyline the WhiteRose Marital Crisis Arc and while I'm mostly joking when I do that, it sort of is that. It's a low point in their relationship, but one where the love is clearly still there, and in particular the latter third of the Volume seems to be setting up a "WhiteRose Couples Counseling Arc" - one that would do for them what Volume 6 did for the Bees. And with where Volume 9 leaves off, and Weiss emulating Ruby in Tale, it's likely that going forward we'll see Weiss helping Ruby carry the burdens of leadership, even stepping up when Ruby needs to take a step back, and while it's likely that everyone in Ruby's circle will encourage her to open up more, I wouldn't be surprised if that also ends up being especially prevalent with Weiss. Or as Edgy-Kiid put it:
Something is going to change in their relationship. Ruby may become more open with her emotions around Weiss and Weiss may take the lead more often if she feels like Ruby needs a break. Their relationship will become stronger and their respect for each other will grow deeper.
In other words, while the middle of Volume 9 is the coldest part of WhiteRose's winter, the final third sets up WhiteRose's spring
I could go on longer, but honestly I think I've covered most of the major points for me, so that's it from me
thinking about that post of people assuming ao3 has an algorithm and also about how bonkers persistent the view is that ao3 is social media lite. like with startling regularity I get comments saying something along the lines of "it's probably weird to comment on a fic this old--" no it isn't!!!! this is an archive I am literally just assuming you searched for a selection of specific tags or sorted by kudos or looked back on my pseud or any other number of completely normal ways to use an archive site ?? kill the tiktok ghost in your brain and comment on old stuff it's NOT weird
More of a vent post, But I while I don't hate Jaune, I get so annoyed that when I search the f/f rwby fics or even just the rwby tag on tumblr I will always see a Jaune haremslop fic or posts, like he deserves better than to be the blank self insert male character. But like why do they have to tag them as f/f every time leave that out of the femslash tag.
What interests me about the experience of playing Armored Core 6 is the comparison between Walter and Ayre. When Ayre shows up, I’d grown so attached to Walter and expectant of his detached and impersonal way of engaging with you that it had me searching Ayre’s gentleness and earnestness for ulterior motive. Walter’s not a bad guy per se, but to have someone as kind as Ayre — I don’t know, I began to stop caring if there WAS an ulterior motive on her end just because that warmth and companionship was really nice. It’s nice to have things to take for granted in a world like AC6 where you can’t easily tell who to trust. Rusty’s a bit like her too — he’s got a good heart, but it’s weathered by cynicism and tempered with caution. Walter doesn’t really know how to relate to you at all and, while it seems like he cares about you when discussing you in private, he’s all business when it comes to actual conversation.
It’s just a good thing Ayre DID genuinely turn out as kind as she appeared. She could’ve played me like a fiddle.
