person with schizophrenia here adding that I’ve seen so much fear surrounding this diagnosis, people saying it turns your life into a nightmare or a hellscape or removes your personality and turns you into a husk, and I want to say that’s not true and definitely isn’t true if you have good access to medical support. medicated schizophrenics are some of the coolest and most creative people I know who are able to live fulfilling lives outside of the expectations and constrictions of “mainstream society”. the way people with autism and adhd are just kind of known for doing their own thing and finding their own happiness applies to people with schizophrenia too (I also know some people who are completely indistinguishable from a neurotypical person to an outside observer, because it’s a spectrum).
chipping in as a schizophrenic in its 30s:
my most alarming symptoms started almost right after i graduated high school (age 18). i instantly started to become more withdrawn and reclusive. i had maybe 2 friends and i struggled to socialize with them and anyone else. i started struggling more with insomnia. i started becoming more and more convinced that other people could read my mind. i would be catatonic for sometimes hours.
for many years in my 20s, i became convinced i was a fallen angel punished by god. i have never been a christian in my life. i'm still not one. i also started believing i was God, that I could control the outcome of things. i had an 8 hour long psychotic episode where i was convinced that a character from a video game was in my house trying to kill me. i was and still am unbearably paranoid.
if i hadn't been diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2017, i would have never known why these things were happening to me, and worse, i may have believed some of my more dangerous delusions. i ended up starting antipsychotic medication and its been a huge game changer for me. not every schizophrenic person needs to be on medication, but it changed my life for the better. i'm definitely glad i'm in care for my schizophrenia now
i can actually sleep. i'm not scared shitless every single day. i'm not convinced there things in my house trying to hurt me. if you're dealing with things like this, it's okay to seek help. you're not alone. psychosis is stigmatized but its a real problem many people deal with. you shouldn't have to suffer in silence. you deserve to know if this is what's going on with you, and where to go from there.
my schizophrenia isn't and wasn't a death sentence. my quality of life has improved significantly what i found out was going on, and how to cope with it and ease my symptoms. it's okay to be schizophrenic. that's just how our brains are mapped. we deserve to live happy lives, we are not "doomed" or "lost causes" or "too crazy". we're people

On tumblr and elsewhere in my internetsphere, I see a ton of people who have been very critical of Kamala, and I’m wondering, how these people are planning to vote. I’d also love to hear how the war in Gaza is or isn’t impacting your choice!
Turns out Kamala saying "ceasefire" that one time has had No material affect on Gaza or Palestine. Further, it's even more useless when she doesn't actually mean ceasefire, she means a humanitarian pause.
Every Palestinian I've seen has refused to support Kamala and so in solidarity with people around the globe, so am I.
The uncommitted movement and other movements being led by American-Palestinians also are deeply unsatisfied with the way she's chosen to place human lives at the same level importance as her career. And that's not getting into how she's betrayed natives with pipelines, her admin fighting lawsuits in Sudan, or how Democrats as a whole are doing everything they can to block 3rd parties and ranked choice voting from being in the ballot.
Now with all this demand for reform being asked of her, Kamala turned her back and decided to try courting Trump supporters instead; with promises to be stricter at the border, increasing police, and be tougher on crime.
I'm not voting for Kamala because no amount of blue suits can hide the fact that her policy's mirror those of George W Bush, right down to his unconditional support of Israel and condemnation of how Palestinians are treated.
He helped kick start the war on terror after 9/11 now Kamala is backing up Israel the same exact way with the same exact logic about 10/7
And I learned from history. Americans have no business making the same mistake twice on an open book quiz.
If you decide not to vote as a protest, you are deciding that your clear conscious is worth more than people's lives.
Your protest by not voting will not save lives. It will barely even send a message. You will wash your hands of guilt and wade through the filthy rivers of consequences you don't see, singing about how sad you are that everything is getting worse. You will not save a single life, you will barely even register to the politicians you want to listen. If the democrats you hate don't get elected, they will just keep trying, they keep their other jobs, their donors, and they'll see "I need to appeal MORE to the centrists, to the people who actually DO vote!" and you'll lose them even more. Next time you vote, if you even get the chance, your options will be even worse.
You aren't voting for perfect, you're voting for progress. And sometimes progress means the bare minimum that isn't sliding backward into hell. Because if we slide backward, the next time we make progress will be trying desperately to get back to where we ARE, and where we are right now isn't even close to good enough. If you want to walk a mile forward, one step is better than walking 100 backward. So stop saying you care so much and actually do something.
If you want to climb a mountain, don't just step backward into the river below you, START CLIMBING.

They message has been Very Much heard and the response by Kamala Harris has been to abandon leftists demanding accountability and progressive policies and to instead start promising to be harsher than Trump regarding the border and more supportive of police and in her DNC speech named China specifically as the competitor endangering American lives. Her response has been to start catering to the alt-right.
Calling her a progressive is copium to make You feel better about your vote.

There's this idea that people who are not voting dem are "putting their conscious over real lives" which you know aside from the fact they basically say that they don't view Palestinians as real people, it's just also like... they're acting like this is all a matter of conscious rather than planned, strategic impact in response to one of the worst American funded atrocities in the century. This isn't some abstract idea, but, real people are dying because of AMERICANS' support to Israel. The idea that conscious isn't playing a role in how you vote is so astounding to me because you're admitting you have no real principals in life and you think politics is a game you have to outsmart instead of a system of governance that your actions impact. You even admit that your actions impact it by telling people to vote. But you're treating voting like a praxis of liberation when it's not. Black Americans have been saying electoral politics will not impact liberation for decades before this. So if we remove the idea that voting is a useful tool in ensuring safety.... OK what are we left with? Like what do you, as a kamala harris voter, value? Because I don't think you guys realize that to the rest of us, you guys have no ideological standpoints that you firmly hold. You can argue that you're voting for whoever in America, to ensure their safety, but you're not like... making a case that you care outside of that circle of influence. You're straight up saying things like "I'm happy to vote for kamala harris" and not only is that tone deaf in the current climate, it communicates that you don't really have any ideologies beyond "I only am concerned with a specific set of people who, comparably, are not in extreme violence that the American government in inflicting onto other people. So you can argue that you're helping some but you still care about others, but in comparison you're like... totally fine with the unbearable violence inflicted on people around the world. And I'm saying this as a palestinian in America. I'm like in direct harm, I worry about my own safety and the safety of my family... but I don't consider that comparable in any way to Palestinians in palestine and I would be offended if people compared my struggles with Palestinian natives in the homeland.

so many of the "i only use chat gpt for ___" excuses are concerning because people use it in place of learning basic, valuable skills.
you don't need chat gpt to write professional sounding emails for you, there are many many guides on the internet and with a bit of practise you can learn to write them yourself. a very important skill for a professional to have, and some of the basic rules will carry over into irl conversations!
you don't need chat gpt to be a "more detailed search engine", because you're robbing yourself of the chance to learn how to find and filter information on the internet and evaluate the credibility of sources. which is a VITAL skill. plus, chat gpt is notorious for being wrong?
if you use it to write essays, you're taking away your ability to hone your research skills, your writing skills, your critical thinking skills. your ability to create persuasive arguments!
and for most of the other reasons people use chat gpt, there are non-ai websites for that! for maths, wolfram alpha. for figuring out what you can cook with the ingredients you have there's supercook and the like. for creating routines, there's about a million apps!

i have been in community with profoundly developmentally disabled peers and peers with brain damage my whole life, bc i had a childhood diagnosis. i have also been leftist my whole life; my mother was a marxist and raised me that way, and while their politics were absolute dogshit, they were lefty dogshit.
my entire life, i have seen leftist educators throw mentally disabled people away as "lost causes" because they couldn't engage with the material the way it was being presented. leftist outreach and education does, genuinely, have a massive lack of accessible material. to be blunt, people are not interested in retrofitting their leftist outreach to be accessible to people who learn best through episodes of sesame street.
as in, i have repeatedly faced outright laughter and cruelty over the idea that this could be a priority. or even something that we consider doing at all.
"people who are that mentally disabled don't need to know about these things," the kindest interpretation goes. ("people who are that mentally disabled don't interact with the world, anyway, they're all in institutions or monitored 24/7 by their parents," the uncharitable underlying assumptions go. "they wouldn't be a worker who needs a union. or a library attendee. or a member of the community garden. or a volunteer at the food bank. or or or")
the people i have seen this hurt the worst, over and over again, are profoundly mentally disabled people of color whose lack of access to accessible antiracist education is causing real danger in their lives. institutionalized disabled people of color who have learned racist ideology and behaviors from white authority, whether they were adopted by white families or incarcerated in care institutions run by white staff. who are treated lower than garbage by leftist educators, who view them as "lost causes," as unworthy of time and effort and attention, as deserving of their abuses because they... what... internalized the abuses that make up every aspect of their lives since birth?
i see people saying things in this conversation like "disability isn't an excuse for racism or transphobia or whatever, people have the obligation to improve themselves." oh, believe me, i have seen again and again how many privileged disabled people utilize their disabilities to punch down on others, try to escape accountability for their punching down by citing disability. but individual weaponization of identity is just that: weaponization of identity.
the power structures at play are what they are. it is a noble and admirable goal to want leftist outreach and education to be more accessible to all. if that is truly your goal, you must eventually reckon with the existence of people who do, actually, really need it presented in a picture book. or an episode of bluey. or a conversation where you only use examples of people they know in real life, using things that happened to them personally. the existence of people who cannot grasp forms of abstract reasoning, who need information presented as rules, or as guidelines, or as categories. the idea that yes, fully grown adults who need daniel tiger to explain racism to them are human beings who not only deserve access to that very thing, but who also deserve to be a part of leftist spaces and benefit from leftist organizing. are people for whom it might be INTEGRAL they get to be a part of leftism. are victims of racism themselves and suffering without access to antiracist spaces and community and support.
and you will need to reckon with the abject cruelty of your peers who laugh and mock the very idea of this. you need to reckon with the fact that a lot of people you respect, a lot of leftists doing genuinely good work, will respond to this by making fun of the people you're serving, even outright telling you their violent fantasies about these people. that is the experience of organizing in leftist spaces for profoundly disabled people. that is why so many of us burn out so fast. there IS a structural problem with mentally disabled people being seen as disposable and not a part of community. and it is EXTREMELY present in leftist organizing and outreach efforts.
Queer History Syllabus
About a year ago, in a little ice cream shop with one of my best friends, we had a long conversation about queer history. She had recently came out as bisexual and I wanted to use my deep knowledge of her and of queer history to strengthen her connection to the community. So, I asked her if I could send her an email. A small selection of articles about queer history that I thought she would connect with. Since then I have been encouraged by everyone who has heard of it to share it with the wider queer community, and I am so excited to get to that point.
There are still parts that I want to workshop, but I am ready to at least share the outline of the idea.
After spending over 8 years studying queer history, I have learned that there is a lot to learn. Writing over 200 articles, there is so much I want to share, but I know that stories are so much more impactful when they are shared with love and some level of knowledge for the audience. So I want to start making people a personalized queer history syllabus based on their passions, affinity groups, and values.
This will be time and energy consuming. To do it with the intentionality I want to, it has to be a slow and supported process. If you want to see this come to life (and possibly be a part of the early stages), please consider becoming a patron.
