also a thing w fads is like. people often ARE into them bcos they just genuinely like the thing. obviously social bonding is part of it but if a thing becomes popular it's bcos a lot of people like it.

when i was a young teen all my friends hit their boyband phase and i was very irritated by it at the time in part bcos i didn't believe that everyone involved genuinely like the bands? i was like surely you are all just bandwagoning bcos it's what's popular rn. you cannot possibly all have just up and decided to care about these rubbish bands.

anyway a number of years later it registered with me that a big part of what was going on was that i was a baby lesbian and they were all into boys. undoubtedly they were all completely sincere in their passion for Charlie from Busted and i just wasn't getting it.

obviously this is quite an extreme example but hopefully u see my point
