mlb changed uniform manufacturers this year to this company that has been making dogshit licensed fan merch for a while (fanatics, may the lord curse their name) and first of all the new jerseys are cheap and have awful stitching and the lettering on player names is abysmal. but second and most importantly the new pants are Extremely Transparent

also apparently they not doing custom tailoring for pants anymore. which is a problem because pitchers tend to have really thick thighs and standard issue pants across the board are not gonna cut it lmao (see exhibit a below)

ohhhh this is a post that allows me to talk about Jaques Plante, the knitting goalie!!

he's a HOFer so lots of people know about him obviously but still! if you don't know who he is:

he was a canadian goalie who played for 6 different NHL teams during his 20+ years in the league.

plante was the first NHL goaltender to wear a goaltender mask in regulation play on a regular basis!(!!!!!!!) he was made fun of for it and called scared (probably in a much less nice way) x

he did so many cool things during his career but the thing that's the most important because of the original post:

HE WAS A KNITTER!!

his mother taught him to knit and embroider and he did both as an adult. (he was also a painter!)

he knitted on trains going to games, in the locker room etc. he knitted his own undershirts, socks, toques & scarves and people for sure thought it was weird. he would always talk about it with pride though, he could apparently knit a pair of socks in a single day and a toque in 3,5 hours!

he used knitting as a form of relaxation but also because he said he couldn't find what he wanted in stores so he made it himself!

plante grew up very poor and was very careful with his money once he had it.

one of my fave quotes from him (about knitting) is this:

"a fellow has to have something to do when he's not tending the net."

gonna put the progress of this thing in its own post

so we start with references

then i figure out my layouts and start sketchin, putting the text down first after initial drafting

then i gotta fully flesh out all of the illustrative bits with pencil sketching. we got the holy gritty with his holy hockey staff and flyers pendant, little bits of orange dashed onto there, designing the flyers logo wherever i can

then we get black inking on there, bit more orange as well. normally i get kinda heartbroken when I smear a bit of ink here or there by mistake, even patch to fix mistakes sometimes.

But I'm gonna be real. The small blots match too well with the overall energy of the piece

public service announcement: the nhl website recently changed their photo hosting service to something that makes it much easier to scrape the full 4k images off the site. if u want pics of your blorbos in beautiful hd, right click to open image in new tab and then edit the url following this 👇

update: since posting this i have discovered that if you think a photo is cropped and you want to get whatever's been trimmed off, insert "-c_pad" after the "size60". so that one section should read /t_ratio16_9-size60-c_pad/ (or whatever the ratio is, but in my experience it seems to always be 16x9) it will have white borders bc the aspect ratio will be the same but youll get the full image and you can just crop it yourself. theoretically you should be able to change the ratio directly but every time i have tried on the nhl site it has just given me an http error, but if anyone wants to do some experimenting themselves to see if they can figure it out, please do :)

if an image is square but was originally 16x9, you can just replace the t_ratio_1_1 with t_ratio16_9 and vice versa. this SHOULD work with other aspect ratios (you can find them using the c_pad) trick however i had no luck w an image i knew was 3x2 so beyond the 1x1 or 16x9 aspect ratios this remains a mystery to me. the c_pad and cropping works fine unless youre insane about Maximum Number Of Pixels. which i kinda am but anyways.
