Musical Theatre Roles from Lowest to Highest (male range)
I’m not nearly as familiar with the ins and outs of the male range, so I’ve made the range divisions much more general. Some of these characters are definitely up for interpretation for which vocal part they fall under, but if you feel a character is way out of place, please let me know! I absolutely could have mixed up one of the octave numbers here, so please don’t be shy about messaging me, I would really appreciate it actually!
Note that I’ve placed some of these based on what the original casting call labelled them as, not my own interpretation. Also note that I’ve based each of these octave numbers on the piano octave numbering. There’s a lot of discrepancy in how male range is labelled, so if in doubt, remember that I’ve based this off of the piano octaves.
Don’t know your vocal range? Check out this video for help figuring it out!
You can find the female counterpart to this post here!

How to Talk to your Audition Accompanist!
We may seem like scary people, perhaps because we hold the integrity of the song in our hands, but I promise we want the best for you and your audition! So, I’ve had some people ask me to make a post on how to talk to accompanists to get the best out of your audition as possible, so here we go!

Shows every actor should know
It’s quite unlikely that you’ve read/seen/listened to each and every one of these shows. I certainly haven’t! But it’s a place to work off of–something you can go to and see what you should read next, what show you should try to see, what’s missing in your education! And perhaps you’re a musical theatre artist and think you should skip the straight play section–don’t. These are shows you should know too! I’ve put an asterisk by shows that I particularly recommend and that changed my life as a performer, to give you a place to start! Enjoy!
Note: If I’m miscategorized something or feel as if something is missing from this list, please don’t hesitate to tell me!

nobody talks about rent enough
“modern media doesnt diversify gays enough. they’re all white m-”
“yeah but what about lesbia-”
“how about interracial couples-”
“what about transgender-”
(you could also argue that she’s nonbinary, as mimi also quotes her saying that she called herself “more than a man than you’ll ever be, and more a woman than you’ll ever get”)
“what about bisexua-”
(anthony rapp, who plays mark, is bisexual too)
4/7 of the main cast are PoC and 4/7 also have AIDS not to mention this movie is a MUSICAL I MEAN rip jonathan larson
IN CONCLUSION rent is a very important movie/musical
Ok, no, you guys do not understand how important it was for RENT to feature LGBT people, sex workers and addicts living with HIV/AIDS in 1993. In 93, AIDS was only just beginning to be recognized and was still heavily stigmatized. Many people believed that it was a “dirty” disease that only affected degenerate people. Some even believed that it was a sent by God to dole out punishment to sinners. For RENT to not only tell the story of AIDS victims, but “undesireable” AIDS victims was unbelievably brave and important.
Audition Material Help Masterpost
As a recent graduate of a drama school, that has a 1% acceptance rate, I’d thought I’d put together a list of tips I learnt there, and what helped me get in. All of these tips apply to UK drama school auditions. @i-remember-there-was-mist is also great for audition help!
