I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT AZULA AND URSA I CAN’T FIND THE ANSWER TO?

AT WHAT POINT DID AZULA KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT WHY HER MOTHER LEFT?

There has been so much discourse about what affect Ursa had on Azula, and a lot of it boils down to two very different scenes:

I have read so many theories about how Azula gets from her mindset in The Beach to the one she seems to have in the finale, and I have my own theory about what changed in between:

Did Azula learn the truth about her mother’s banishment too?

We know Zuko was in the dark about exactly what happened when Ursa disappeared. I think that he always had some hope that she was still alive, but probably thought it was more likely she was dead. At least that’s how I interpret this dream:

But what did Azula think? I always had the impression that Azula didn’t think Ursa was dead, but that she simply left. Just took off like any deadbeat parent would, because she was tired of the family. And that Azula's belief that her mother didn’t love her was informed by the belief she had left them of her own free will.

Analyzing all of Azula’s scenes more closely . . . I still kind of get that impression, but I have to admit there’s no actual evidence to back it up. At most, I can say that Azula never says or does anything to suggest she thinks her mom died, in my opinion.

And my theory about Azula’s seeming change in attitude, is that it would make sense if she had recently found out that her mother had been forced to leave.

If I could pick one conversation scene to add to the show, it would be what Ozai and Azula said to each other right after the Day of Black Sun invasion? How did Azula react to the news that Zuko had gone completely rogue and vowed to join the Avatar? And what did Ozai do to Azula, to punish her for lying about the Avatar’s death? I just can’t imagine him ever letting that slide.

It’s easy to imagine Azula reporting after the battle to say there’d been a “shocking surprise,” and the Avatar had miraculously turned up alive with the invasion force. Zuko must have been a fraud this whole time! Only for Ozai to reveal what Zuko had already ratted them both out. Or, if he really wanted to mentally punish her, I could see Ozai pretending to be surprised by the news; only to make some off-hand and vaguely threatening comments that implied Zuko might have told him the truth already, just to make Azula scared and uncertain. Definitely something his trifling ass would do.

But getting back on topic, I think there is a very good chance that at about this time in the show, Ozai might have also told Azula the truth about why Ursa was gone. That they had both killed Azulon and he’d banished her on pain of death. With Zuko now on the Avatar’s side, there is an almost certain chance that Azula will be going after him eventually; Ozai would have to consider the possibility that Zuko might tell her what he’d learned if he had a chance. Better that Azula hear his version of events first, so he can gauge her reaction and make sure it won’t be a problem.

If Azula didn’t already know the truth, then it could hit her already fragile psyche like an angry Komodo rhino. And it might recontextualize a lot of the things she thought were true about her mother.

I feel like Azula has a kind of fatalistic view of relationships; that people tend to fail you if you let them. And I feel like after Ursa “ran out” on the family, Azula probably tried to compartmentalize her grief by telling herself that it was inevitable. That her mother hated her, so their relationship was always going to end badly; it couldn’t have gone any other way.

But if she were to learn the truth, that her mother had been forced to leave, well that might cause her to realize that things didn’t have to end as badly as they had between her and Ursa. They could have gone another way.

And realizing that might actually have hurt even more!

So, that’s my two cents on the Azula-Ursa discourse. Can anyone think of any actual evidence for how much of the truth Azula knew, and at what point she knew it? I’m sincerely asking because I couldn’t find anything!

Azula probably figured it all out pretty fast I mean, consider the order of events from Azula's perspective:

Dad says he should get the throne instead of uncle and grandpa says dad has to kill zuzu

Mom finds out (and she loves zuzu a lot) and goes to talk to dad

A few days later you wake up and sinultaineously find out that grandpa is dead and mom has disappeared, now zuzu is safe

The most reasonable explanation for this is that ursa killed azulon to save zuko and had to flee because of the consequences — i think a pretty interesting query is whether or not Azula thinks Ozai was in on it? Even in Azula's almost deific view of her father, its absolutely something he would do, but Azula is incredibly loyal to her nation, the crown, and she is literally named after her grandfather so it would seem a little strange if she was like, supportive of murdering him...

But i mean, bear in mind Azula also knew about Roku being their grandparent and even led Zuko to the secret source of it. She is farrr deepee in the know than any other character in the show, next to Ozai

Something to bear in mind is that it is a hallucination that tells Azula that she loves her. Now, this is a narrative and not real life so ofc narrative devices move the story along. But I think people misunderstand the hallucination!Ursa, as someone who experiences real world hallucinations.

The hallucination!Ursa is telling her that she loves Azula not because it's secretly true or because Azula knows this deep down inside of her. Rather, it is saying what Azula wants to hear.

Real world hallucinations can say what the fuck ever, btw. I once had a voice come out of nowhere to announce, "I like to comb my facial hair." Like okay, I guess? Good for you, random voice. But I don't live inside a narrative (probably).

i was watching the karaoke scene again last night and genuinely like it fucks me up

bc in no way can be read that she was always gonna send grace on the hail mary, or that she suspected or knew she was going to have to send him.

when she sings, it is absolutely to him, but it's to reassure him that she knows she's going away but that she's coming back. she's telling him to hang in there, that it's going to be hard but that she believes in him and that she will come back when the time is right and they'll meet again somewhere far away from here.

that's the captain of the ship telling her first mate "youre gonna have to run things when im gone but its okay bc i believe in you and youre gonna do fine. I'll be back soon."

she KNOWS she's a scapegoat. she's been planning for her arrest and eventual escape the whole time on the backburner.

and then the disaster happens and she has to send her second in command, her friend, to his death or they all die.

and suddenly there is no more "we'll meet again someday" bc she's never gonna see him again. even if everything goes to plan and she escapes and the beetles arrive with a solution-- she loses grace forever.

if that doesnt just fucking gut you, if youre too busy being mad at her for killing grace to appreciate the fucking tragedy that is their relationship, you are missing out on some prime angst.
