Brian opened the door with a flashlight in one hand and a crowbar in the other.

It took him a second to recognize the figure on the porch—not because he’d forgotten, but because Jay looked like a ghost wearing his own skin. Hollow-eyed. Rain-slicked. Dirt beneath his nails like he’d been digging for something he’d buried himself.

He didn’t say hello. Didn’t even ask to come in.

He just stood there, breathing too shallow and trembling like a wire pulled too tight.

Then:

“You were the only person I could go to.”

Brian stared at him, silent. The porch light buzzed overhead, dim and dying like it was trying not to witness this.

Jay didn’t flinch. Just looked at him the way you might look at a locked door right before you kicked it in.

Brian lowered the crowbar.

And let him in.

Inside smelled like dust and disuse, wet denim and burnt coffee. The heater didn’t work right. Nothing did, lately. Brian lit a candle on the counter, flickering shadows up the walls like ghosts trying to whisper something through flame.

Jay leaned against the fridge and slid down to the floor like he’d finally run out of permission to stand.

Brian crouched across from him, flashlight set on its side, casting them both in cheap horror-movie glow. Jay’s lips were chapped and cracked, his hoodie torn at the wrist.

“Was it following you?” Brian asked.

Jay nodded, then shook his head. “I don’t know anymore. I stopped looking behind me.”

Silence stretched between them. Not awkward. Not cold. Just thick.

Like the room had lungs and they were both breathing wrong inside it.

Jay’s voice came back, smaller this time, something raw scraped off the inside of him.

“I didn’t know where else to go. Everyone else is… I don’t trust what I remember anymore. But you—” He looked up. “I remember you.”

Brian’s heart stuttered like a glitch in the tape. He reached out—slow, careful—and touched Jay’s wrist. Just barely. Like asking a question without words.

Jay leaned into it like it hurt to be touched and hurt more to be left untouched.

There was no heat between them. Nothing cinematic. Just the heavy ache of two people trying to stay human in a world that’s started eating that word alive.

“I keep dreaming in static,” Jay whispered, “and your voice is the only one that doesn’t warp.”

Brian swallowed. He felt like something was rising in his throat—grief or love or hunger, he couldn’t tell. Maybe all three.

He slid closer until their knees brushed.

“I’m not safe either,” he said. “You know that, right?”

“I’m not looking for safe,” Jay said. “I’m looking for real.”

Brian kissed him.

Not a clean kiss. Not sweet. It tasted like fear and rainwater, like memory and ash. It tasted like they might die tomorrow and this was the last thing they’d get to keep.

Jay clung to him like something might pull him backward through time if he let go.

Outside, the trees didn’t move right.

Inside, the candle flared.

And between them, something broke open—quietly, beautifully, like a rib cracking to let a heart finally beat.

They didn’t talk after that.

Not that night.

Jay fell asleep on Brian’s floor, curled against his side, breathing like the world wasn’t ending for the next few hours.

And Brian stayed awake, watching the shadows, one hand resting on Jay’s shoulder like a promise and a shield.

He didn’t know what was coming.

But he knew—

Jay had come to him.

And for now? That had to mean something.

Even if it was the last thing that ever did.

Thank you so much for doing my request! I love this short one-shot between these two weirdos a lot. The dynamic of these two only having each other for comfort and company in a world where they are unable to communicate with anyone else is tragic. That being said, at least neither is alone anymore. :)
