Transgender women will never understand the real burden of being a woman, even after they decide to transition because they are still considered differently. They experience the discrimination of gender-non conforming individuals, but they are not ever going to fully understand what being a biological woman is. The distinction is important for so many reasons. Feminism began as a movement for women to be able to liberated from the control of men. Our biology plays a huge role in our oppression. Abortion, menstruation, rape, healthcare, contraception, female genital mutilation, femicide, education, discussion about all of these topics specifically using the word WOMAN and not ‘uterus bearer’ or ‘pregnant people’, is important. When you shift focus on a movement created for biological women to finally be liberated from men’s control, from men who use our BIOLOGICAL differences to treat us differently, you take away from our movement. Transgender women in countries where female genital mutilation, restriction of education, femicide, abortions, restricted access to menstrual products all happen, are privileged above women. They do not have to deal with any of these issues. The world is not white suburbia, or even America/The West. When you shift focus and try to strip a movement of it’s creators, you are disrespecting and destroying it. When you prioritize the feelings of gender non-conforming men over trauma survivors who dont want penises in their vicinity, when you prioritize gender non-conforming men over lesbians who have faced endless years of correctional rape, you are rendering a movement created for the needs of these women meaningless.
