On Thanksgiving I told my brother and his wife that Riverdale is the best show on television and they both looked aghast but the core four will keep me strong in my convictions.

Did you ever imagine a time when you were a child that children’s tv would go here? I didn’t! I remember a few years ago on here seeing amazement going around that Good Luck Charlie subtly featured a child with two moms, and now there’s a main character coming out! On the Disney Channel! On a show meant for kids! The highest rated kids show for under 14s!

Anyway in this year 2017, a garbage time full of garbage things when we elected a garbage president who hates everyone and whose garbage VP is a proponent of shock treatments for the LGBTQ, the Disney Channel saw a swell of support in this country for moving things backward… and decided to go forward instead.

There were a series of ads on the Disney Channel in May for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month where the various Asian leads of their shows told stories about their family history. The star of Andi Mack said in one of these ads, after recounting the journey of her grandmother who came to America after being widowed with two young children, “My Asian heritage holds a special place in my heart. It reminds me that I’m different, and being different is important and exciting.“ I think about this line a lot. I want all the kids watching TV in this country to not be afraid of being different in this world of build-the-wall chants and white supremacy. I want them to feel important and be excited. Andi Mack seems to want that too. It’s a joy in this hellscape country to know that despite the best efforts of the worst people, there will still be people willing to take the next big step.
