"I... Had no idea you were back..." She sighed. "You don't need to get involved with us, I can take care of myself!"

“I’m not doing it for your sake, I have my own business with him” the way he turns away while speaking betrays his words. While his conversation with IV wasn’t entirely for Rio he wouldn’t have been anywhere as eager to message him if it wasn’t for the older teen’s mean spirited words.

Rubbing his eyes with the sleeve of his jacket he allowed himself to step forward, joining IV at the railing. The muscles of the other’s arms and the scars peaking out from under the black shirt juxtaposed each other; a combination of beauty and horror. While not physical, he had his own scars. There was a lot he couldn’t just wash away.

“Explanations, yeah. Apologies, not at all. I could go around apologising for all I’ve done and no-one would give a shit. Words are nothing. Motives and reasons, however, they mean a lot.”

Exhaling deeply he leaned over the metal bar that separated them from 15 stories of open air. Cheerful and bright, the lights of Heartland seemed like a joke. Both him and IV knew what city was really like. No amount of festive lighting could change that.

“I just wanna know why, after that first card, you kept doing it. Fuck, you had to have known it wasn’t really him. I know you had a hard time at…”

He paused.

“…At the foster home and such. I know what it’s like and I also know that a resentment for what has happened is no reason to take things as far as you did.”

“I knew that I was going to hurt her. I thought it would be like every other duel. Knock her back, give her the shakes for a few days. Something felt wrong though. From the first draw it wasn’t like it should have been…. I don’t know why I kept going but I did. I knew. I think I really did know at the heart of it.”

IV frowned and glanced down over the railing. “It was fucked up, Ryoga. What I felt and what happened. Anger helped me cope with everything I felt. Dueling… it let me take it out on others.” He sighed. “But I hadn’t wanted to hurt her to that point. I didn’t stop myself, though. I really didn’t.” His lips pulled downward and his eyes shut for a moment, feeling the cool breeze on his face.

“I wish I could blame everything on Tron. It would make for an easy excuse.”

It was what he needed to hear but at the same time, it wasn't. Pushing the realisation that him and IV were so alike out of his head he tried to arrange his thoughts. He'd admitted it; admitted that it was his anger and that it was him. No lies about it being for his family or for Tron.

Tron... the monster. His lips twitched as he was reminded of how Tron had disappeared while duelling Yuuma. Good.

"You could blame your shit on Tron and so could I. I sent people to hospital for no reason. They just wanted to duel me and I overran them. Fuck. I was anger. You say you acted that was as a release for it? I became that feeling."

Exhaling he shook his head. The ground was cool beneath him as he slid into a seated position; jeans did nothing to counteract the cold of the concrete.

"I won't forgive you..."

IV looked tall from down here but he couldn't be bothered acting imposing. Even sitting down, he could probably win against IV if the other decided to lash out.

"I can't forgive you."

“No. I can’t.” IV let out a low sigh and his fingers drummed over the railing. After a moment he pulled his jacket off. It was too warm out and the damn thing was heavy. The black shirt underneath allowed him to cool down and feel more relaxed. Why here. It was a good question and one he wasn’t really sure of. Maybe it was because this one event had been the catalyst that began his complete spirall into… this. Who he let himself become. It was after the accident that he’d embraced that power. The darkness. The evil that lived inside of his heart.

It was still there, yes. But for now he kept it docile. Or at least lessened what showed.

At the root of it he was fully aware that he was a monster and yet to change it? Well that was just…

Frightening.

“There’s a lot of bad blood between us. I want to clear some of that. I’m sure you’d rather fists but seeing as I finally can feel my arm again I’d rather not,” he continued, tone clipped and dry. “I owe you explanations, don’t I? I’d apologize but you don’t want to hear it. At least, not in a blanket form. Right?” His head turned slightly.

“Well?”

“Do you ever shut up and realize that you’re aggressiveness is probably the reason you’re still alone and miserable?” IV snapped. “You’re nothing more than a child and you’re trying to fit into adult shoes. Knock it off.” Yet at his core IV knew that Ryoga was very much an adult. His childhood - his youth - had been ripped away from him. Worst of all? It was probably IV’s fault that things had turned out this way.

He shook his head to clear it and stepped out onto the roof, heading for the far edge and leaning over the rail, staring straight down. “Do you know this place? I do.” It was haunting. Sometimes he still felt that if he looked down the edge of this building between it and the next he could smell the burning clothes. The smell of his own singed flesh burned against the fabric of his clothes.

His eyes closed and he inhaled deeply through his nose to clear the memories with a stream of clean air. “I owe you and the brat thanks. Same with that damned hunter. It’s why I was there. I was looking for Yuma.” A low chuckle forms in the back of his throat and he shakes his head. “But Yuma and Kaito still have a purpose in the dueling world, don’t they. But what about you, hmm? Where does that leave you?”

Eyes snapping shut the memories began to play through his mind of when he'd heard the news. Of the first time he'd gone to see her. The once flawless face and hair much like his own burned beyond recognition. She was still beautiful but she was merely a shadow of what she had been. 

"Why here though?"

Maybe it was the cool wind stinging his eyes, maybe it was the pain he felt inside at seeing this place; tears began to form. No way could he let himself cry in front of IV. As a precaution he took a couple of steps behind the other. If his face wasn't visible, he'd have time to clear the tears.

Thanks weren't what he wanted or needed. Neither was the question about his purpose. Rio was getting better, slowly but surely and coming fourth in the WDC had won him enough money to see her through her treatment. Duelling was fun, he couldn't deny that he loved the thrill and excitement of it but what purpose did he have doing it?

"I have a purpose in that world as long as I have a deck I know and trust. I cant just abandon it and I have a feeling you can't either."

“You shouldn’t have given me that sort of information,” IV muttered, though hi tone suggested that it wouldn’t benefit him. He had no desire to see Ryoga locked up. “Besides, I took a bad fall. No one is the blame, right?” A low chuckle escaped him and he shook his head.

“Arm first. Show and tell later.”

By playing up Ryoga as being his best friend, IV managed to convince the nurses that there had been a fight with some street thugs and he and Ryoga were the victims of a mugging. With his nose set, face cleaned, and arm reset he felt a lot better than he had an hour ago. Once they were out of eyeshot of the doors, IV crated distance between himself and his rival once more and beckoned him to follow him with one finger.

“I hope you’re no nervous about heights.” he said while pushing open the back door of a building, showing a cramped staircase. “We’re going to the roof. And no, I’m not going to push you off I don’t feel like cleaning that up off the street today. But there is something up there I want you to see.”

Having to pretend he was IV's friend for the hour they spent, sat in the overly clean smelling room as the other was dealt to by a team of too concerned acting nurses was tedious to say the least. When they eventually stepped back into fresh air again, he had more than half a mind to re-do what the nurses had just cleaned up. Curiosity regarding what IV wanted to show him won out.

"Oh yay, as if I hadn't gotten my daily quota of pointless walking already. This better be worth it."

It seemed the journey was just as tedious as the A&E visit had been. The stairs kept on creaking and the insulation in the place was a joke. Not to mention he still had no clue what he was going to see.

"Yeah, I'm trusting you not to kill me, I took you to get your arm fixed. Now can you just tell me where the fuck we're going."

Rude and low his tone did not hide the anger he felt at having to climb the staircase to who-the-fuck-knew.

I know I'm probably bothering you, but I just thought I'd let you know that the nurses got me walking today. It was only for 5 minutes, but it's better than nothing!

Don't ever think that you're bothering me! Rio,you're my only sister and I love you. Thank you for letting me know. I'm sorry I haven't been in contact much lately, I've had a lot to deal with and I know that's no excuse. I'm so proud of you.

IV sighed and glanced over at Ryoga again. He nearly wanted to throw out some snarky remark but it didn’t come to him. Instead, he motioned with his good hand for Ryoga to follow him. “Come on. I need to get my arm put back in place and then I want to show you something.” He paused. “I’m doing this because I think we had some connection or something. I just don’t feel in a particular asshole mood right now and also you rattled my fucking head around enough that I’m slightly dizzy.”

Not to mention the bleeding nose but that was another issue.

“I guess we’re both kinda fucked up. But if the places were reversed, I wouldn’t forgive me either.” Admittedly, though, IV would want the chance to apologize to Rio and Ryoga and their family at some point. Not that he’d ever tell that to Ryoga, however.

His arm was really starting to burn. He winced and leaned heavily against the wall for a moment. He tried to remember what had even brought him to this area in the first place, he - Oh right. Same reason as Ryoga. Somewhat.

“Fuck this hurts.”

Rolling his eyes he uncrossed his arms and walked slowly to where IV leant. He didn't want to be doing this, not only was helping IV completely unlike him but he usually didn't care this much about others. 

'It's only this once and it's only cause he understands, okay? You can do this just once.'

The smooth fabric of IV's shirt was damp with blood as his hand cupped it. 

"C'mon then. I'll ask around the guys here. Just promise me you wont tell them it was me who did this to you... I dunno if I'll get away with just a warning this time."

Darting around the area his eyes settled on someone who wasn't in the middle of a duel. Rubbing his knuckles on his pants to clean them off and brushing his fingers through his hair he made his way over to the short, red haired girl.

Despite her obvious fear of him, she'd given him the location of a nearby A&E. His reputation as both a bully and a duellist had gained him as much respect as it had fear.

"Right, you."

Walking past IV at a slow pace he began to lead in the direction of the A&E.

"It's this way. Now the fuck is it you wanted to show me?"

For a while he did nothing. No way could he forgive IV but he understood. He couldn’t even face his past enough to think about it. Pushed to the back of his mind, behind a heavy door. Every now and then he still needed to open that door and throw new memories behind it. What IV had done, as much of a mess as he looked, was strong. 

He was feeling something he never thought he’d feel for IV. Respect.

Uncrossing his arms he let them hang at his sides, face blank. Part of him wished he didn’t care, that he had no similarities to him. He couldn’t. Neither of them had wanted this to be their lives, neither had planned for any of this to happen. Neither of them wanted any of it.

Two words, they were all he could say. 

“I know.”

IV winced again and held his limp arm at his side. It was burning. He didn’t want Ryoga’s pity and he - No this… wasn’t pity. He knew. He understood. What IV thought he’d seen flash briefly in Ryoga’s eyes seemed to be true. Ah… so street life hadn’t been kind to him, had it? Was that by his own doing or had IV played a role in it?

“I didn’t want to hurt her. Telling you I meant to was wrong.” He hated this. Before his rival he was weak and exposed now. There would never be forgiveness but in that moment there was respect and understanding which IV wasn’t sure if he liked or not.

He winced again. Fucking arm. “I assume there’s a clinic around here?”

Again, he stayed silent. No words spilled from his mouth and his anger was directed at himself more than at IV. Briefly his nails dug into his palms as his hands balled into fists but he managed to let it go. Now was not the time to be angry at himself. He couldn't even bring himself to be angry at IV.

"I dunno, I don't come here often."

Wanting to move but unable to bring himself to walk off he didn't. Yuuma, that was his entire reason for being here. IV and his past, Ryoga's own past, they were distractions. Swimming with thoughts his brain began to pound. Memories were coming to the surface. Pushing them back was hard, near impossible. He didn't need this.

Finally he managed to close the door. 

Looking to the ground, he crossed his arms over his chest again.

"Fuck this man, fuck all this."

He stood silently, listening and watching. Not knowing what to say. He wanted IV to continue, he had to know. It would haunt him if he didn’t find out what had made IV, well IV. Fuck, he didn’t even know if that was his actual name. Had his dad decided they were going to have five kids and counted backwards? 

There was no malice or mockery in his voice, it was emotionless, maybe slightly sincere. 

“Tell me.”

IV used his good arm to wipe the blood off his nose and upper lip, eyes averted from Ryoga as a laugh escaped him. It was dark and bitter, the memories surfacing quicker than he felt comfortable with. So he wanted to know? He wanted to hear IV’s little tale? Fine. He licked his dried lip and paced a few steps away from his rival.

“III got adopted fast. He was cute one - charming, too. Everyone just loved him. I got stuck with some drunken couple who was in it for benefits and din’t give much of a damn. She cooked for us, he kept us warm and that was all they did. I lived in that house with three other boys. I thought it would be like with a family, you know? We’d look out for one another.”

IV spat out a mouthful of blood and a near snarl of disgust tore itseld from his throat.

“But those bastards didn’t care about being brothers. They wanted to own me. The older one would sit on my chest while the others beat me to a pulp. At school they shoved me in lockers or closets until I was screaming for help. Eventually I just stopped going to school. Thought I was safe. No… No, I wasn’t safe from them.”

IV finally lifted to his eyes to Ryoga, a wetness pressing against them. His gaze was fierce. Angry and painful, even. Hurt.

“One night they put a pillowcase around my hand and dragged me into the attic. You know what they did to me? They told me not to scream. They shoved a dirty sock in my mouth and they took turns showing me how they ‘owned’ me and how I was there to ‘serve them’. Every night like clockwork this happened. Again and again until I couldn’t fight against it. I couldn’t tell anyone. I didn’t even try to scream after the first few months. And when I stopped fighting they just used it as an excuse to come back for more. Tell others that I was a whore to be used for their own pleasure. So yes, it was a fucking mess.”

He stepped closer to Ryoga. he wanted to curl his fingers around the collar of his jacket but barely stopped himself.

“My own ‘father’ never asked. He never cared. He doesn’t know. No one does. So no, he’s not my father. They’re not my family. And don’t you dare sit there and act as if you’re the only fucking person in this world who’s been hurt. You think that when all this started that’s what I wanted? Do you? I fucking -“

IV cut himself off. He couldn’t do this any longer. He stepped away from Ryoga and kept his back to his rival and tried to control the tremble that threatened to snao his shoulders. “I didn’t think it would end up like this.” He whispered it, though mostly to himself.

IV staggered forward a few steps and held his arm in place at his side. It hurt a lot and he desperately needed to have it set. The pain alone made his eyes sting with unshed tears. He never thought Ryoga would go this far. Did he honestly care? Did he really want to know or was this all just part of his game? Was he looking for a place to hit? 

“Like you said I have ‘daddy issues’,” he snapped in reply. But then his tone dropped and for a moment he looked defeated. “I was young when our father was killed. I hadn’t seen him in years. My teens sucked. Everything was shit. I was mad at V and III had grown up. Me? All I had was Tron.”

IV sucked in a breath and decided to tell Ryoga what needed saying. “I didn’t know that the card was going to hurt her. It felt off, but I never imagined it to nearly kill us. Sometimes I think he wanted us both to die in that blaze. Either way, I suppose in the end it was easier to go with it than fight. I was so tired of fighting then.” His eyes closed. His shoulders slumped despite the pain he felt.

IV was tired. He was exhausted and sick of these lies. The past that haunted him and constantly crept up to bite him and snare him deeper and deeper into a place he wanted to so desperately escape.

“What happened in foster care? It was a fucking mess.”

Hissing in pain as IV slammed his heel into his foot, he brought down his arm slightly. He wasn’t ready to let go yet but he trusted the other not to push things. IV was interested in his past? Nah, he wasn’t. Even so, telling him was just another form of punishment.

“My family was fucked up from the start. My mum? Yeah she was good, Rio was always a bit of a tomboy and she forced her to wear dresses and ribbons anyway, nothing great. It was my dad who was a piece of shit… I’ll skip the details, anyway, you set poor little Rio on fire. Everything fell apart. Some stuff happened, I got tough, learnt how to actually defend myself and now we’re here, me the disaster pulling the strings of the supposed ‘Puppet Master’.”

He couldn’t bring himself to mention things in detail, it still hurt too much. Nightmares flooded every sleeping moment and he was shaped by pain. Closing his eyes to push back the emotions he exhaled loudly. Not now, he had to keep a hold of himself.

“What about you, aye?”

The pressure off his arm was nice but Ryoga had yet to let go. Huh. Guess this was going to be a long-standing issue now. He shifted his stance and listened to what Ryoga had to say. So things had always been tense and there was a tipping point. Who was still in the picture? It was clear to him that Ryoga wasn’t at home right now. Hmm.

And then he asked about him.

IV pictured his arm twisted behind Ryoga’s back. That one body part alone had been through a lot. Burned. Broken. Twisted. Slashed. A dark laugh escaped him.

“You wouldn’t listen even if I told you. You don’t care. You want the upper-hand. You’ve got it, Ryoga. And what will you do with it now?” He snorted and winced against the pain in his shoulder. He wanted to scream, still. “It easier for you to blame me. You don’t give a fucking damn what Tron did to me. What I did after your sister was hurt. You think I wanted to see her -?” He cut off and glared in the opposite direction of where Ryoga’s voice came from.

He should have realized that IV was past his mocking but the old schoolyard bully in him had come back. Life had been cruel to him so he would be to IV. The words that were coming out of the other's mouth were hardly even registering with him, not until his sister was mentioned.

Yeah, he had thought that IV had wanted to see her burn. That's where this had all began. It was the pain in his voice that got him the most. Fighting to keep his image up he gripped tighter at IV's arm.

"You're right... I don't give a fuck about what Tron did to you, you don't give a damn what happened to me, I-"

Nope he still couldn't do it. He was pathetic and he really was, as IV said, a disaster. All he did was push others around to try and get rid of the memories of himself being pushed around. 

Worst of all, he did want to know what Tron had done to IV, he wanted to understand his rival. He just couldn't admit it.

Dropping IV's arm he took a step backwards and crossed his arms in front of himself.

"At least tell me why. Why you followed that little shit into hell even when you knew where he was taking you."

Easy, all he had to do was Xyz succesfully and with no cards in his S/T zone, Johan was gone. He was beginning to doubt ever comparing this guy to Yuuma.

“I summon Drill Barancle and by it’s effect, come back, Shark Stickers. You’ll get to see why it’s a bad idea to swim with sharks, Johan! I create the overlay network, Show yourself! Submersible Carrier, Aero Shark!”

Satisfaction took over as he watched the monster appear on the field. There really was no better feeling than showing guys like this their place.

“I then activate, Marine Snow Seal which allows me to banish one monster on the field… and I chose Rainbow Dragon!”

Not even noticing the look of pain on Johan’s face as his magnificent dragon was sent from the field he continued. Getting caught up in the duel was a problem? No, a talent of his.

“Then I attack directly with both Aero Shark and Hammer Shark!”

The game was his.

Rainbow Dragon had come and she had gone. Johan gave a laugh as Shark attacked directly.

“It’s a bummer that you haven’t seen my secret move yet ! When all of my Crystal Beasts are in my graveyard… Something great happens !” Johan’s graveyard suddenly began to shine, he looked over at Shark, and gave a laugh, “Just kiddin’ !” The blast from the two attacks hit him head on, causing him to fall backwards and the dueling arena to fade.

Fuck, he hadn't even considered that there might be a secondary effect. Bracing himself for a massive hit to his life points or a loss of his field, he was almost disappointed when Johan revealed that he was kidding. A decent duellist, sure but all in all, Johan had a lot to learn. He seemed to duel with his monsters instead of his brain. It might work out most of the time, sure but Ryoga knew there was more to duelling than having faith in your deck.

Taking off his D-Gazer and collapsing his Duel disk his shook his hair out of his face.

"You're not bad but you've gotta think more."

He was almost in awe at how fast Johan had gotten his boss monster out. If he hadn’t duelled Kaito he would have thought it impossible.

“I draw!”

A small smile creeped onto his face. He could do this, the card he’d just drawn settled things.

“I activate Surface! I can now add back Drill Barnacle and Shark Stickers to my hand!”

Summoning Aero Shark wasn’t his best choice right now but he didn’t have a better Rank 3. Cursing himself for his limited extra deck he decided on his move.

“I activate the spell card, Heavy Storm from my hand!”

Now he was safe, not only did he get back Hammer Shark from this but Johan’s face down was gone. 

“Response?”

Heavy storm? No… That means all of his Crystl Beasts would be sent to the graveyard along with Rainbow Ruins. All of his spells and traps suddenly turned into particles, crashing around him, “M-My family !”

Topaz Tiger was sent to the graveyard too, but so was Crystal Release, “I activate the second effect of Crystal Release ! When it’s sent to the graveyard, I can search my deck and grab a crystal beast, putting it in my spell and trap card zone !” Johan grabbed a hold of his deck and searched through it. Shark was proving to be a very worth opponent. He wasn’t sure how to handle these new cards. They were so different, so powerful, “I place Cobalt Eagle in my spell and trap card zone ! Then, I tribute my Crystal Tree ! It has two crystal counters ! I can place two more Crystal Beasts in my spell and trap card zone ! I place Ruby Carbuncle and Emerald Tortoise !” Johan shuffled his deck. This was it. All of his Crystal beasts were either in the graveyard or on the field. He needed to draw it… ”I activate my spell card, Rainbow Ruins !” Johan placed a card in his spell and trap card zone, completely transforming the field. The scenery around the two suddenly changed, creating an ancient Greek Colosseum around them both. A large rainbow shined above them, “Since there are four Crystal Beasts in my spell and trap card zone, I can activate the fourth effect of my Rainbow Ruins ! I am allowed to draw a card… “ Johan looked at his deck, “Come on. . . I believe in you ! “

He pulled a card out as a slight sparkle came from his hand. He looked and gave a smirk, “Alright ! Now that my family is all here, I can special summon to the field, Rainbow Dragon !” Erupting onto the field came a large, yet gorgeous dragon with rainbow crystals lined down its back, “I set a card face down, and I end my turn ! Your move, Shark !”

He was almost in awe at how fast Johan had gotten his boss monster out. If he hadn't duelled Kaito he would have thought it impossible.

"I draw!"

A small smile creeped onto his face. He could do this, the card he'd just drawn settled things.

"I activate Surface! I can now add back Drill Barnacle and Shark Stickers to my hand!"

Summoning Aero Shark wasn't his best choice right now but he didn't have a better Rank 3. Cursing himself for his limited extra deck he decided on his move.

"I activate the spell card, Heavy Storm from my hand!"

Now he was safe, not only did he get back Hammer Shark from this but Johan's face down was gone.
