Gwenog Jones, get back for your tea, young lady! The name that was on the neighbours tongue as they chatted across their short garden fences, hanging up faded laundry in the bitter Welsh wind. Haven’t you heard what little Gwenog Jones has been up to now? … Always a trouble maker, that one.

James’ eyes shot open wide at the mention of her with Sirius. “Whoa, what? No way!” He couldn’t say he was surprised about it, really. She was attractive and Sirius was attractive, so the math added up. “Okay, fine. I admit defeat. My powers of seduction can’t compete with his. But anyway.” They’d gotten off track. “Please can we switch this once?”

“You don’t have powers of seduction.” Gwenog pointed out, factually, pursing her lips. She’d hoped that the mention of her and Sirius would have a greater impact on James. This wasn’t too satisfying. “You’re relentless”

There were certain people Peter could joke around with regarding this kind of thing, but Gwen wasn’t one of those people. She was sweet, of course, but she could be terrifying and Peter wasn’t about to mess with her. He pushed himself up and collected his things, taking a deep breath to calibrate himself. “Okay, m’up,” he promised as he looked around the grounds. “I didn’t get much sleep last night.” Or any. “Anyway, James will probably be at lunch, or just leaving.”

If Gwen had known Peter Pettigrew thought of her as sweet, she almost surly would have broken at least two of his bones. But she didn’t know, so instead she just glared down at him, as he gave her bloody useless information. “You really think I didn’t check there before waking your arse up?” She asked, crossing her arms, and leaning back against the wall. “And why the hell are you so tired in the first place? Who you been staying up all night shagging?”

“We’re going to have to talk about it at some point, you know,” Dorcas soothed quietly. Their game against Gryffindor been bloody brutal (her own arm now in a horrible sling thanks to Sirius’ bludger), but on top of that, they’d lost, which made it all the worse. Gwenog was taking it harder than any of them, though; captain as she was, and Dorcas was worried.

“Oh, we’ll talk about it.” Gwenog didn’t handle losses well, never had, never would, especially not to James fucking Potter. Half her team was in the hospital wing cus of his boys, and she was ready to do something even she would regret. What made it all worse, was she didn’t have a fucking scratch on her. “In practice, when I tell you all exactly how badly you fucked up, and we all figure out how the hell to stop it happening again.” Gwenog looked at Dorcas for a long moment. Why the fucking hell hadn’t she been there to stop that bludger? This was her own damn fault. “How long are you in that thing?”

Ted took half a step back, putting his hands up apologetically. “Sorry, Gwen. Was just coming over to comment on…how lovely the weather is today.” He loved Quidditch to bits, but he never took losing too hard.

“Aye, bloody beautiful day, ain’t it?” She half growled clenching her fists. Logically she understood this was not Ted’s fault, but she couldn’t quite manage to soften her voice.

Most girls would have been bloody proud to walk through the halls with a lovely bouquet of flowers, most girls would have told everyone they were from a lover, if it were true or not, but Gwenog, Gwenog wanted nothing less than to be seen parading about with an arm full of flowers. She would normally have just bloody well burned them, but this time she couldn’t. 

The green paper that held them smelled like home, a bit of smoke, and her mother’s tea, and it made her jaw clench up. Not many people would figure a bird like Gwen would get homesick, but God, she did. Especially when her mom went at did things like this. She ought to owl home right away and thank her, but she didn’t have the heart to write anything down. 

She wanted to go back home, to Scotland where they didn’t act so bloody prissy about everything, and where the girls had a bit of bite to go with their bark, where the lads hands were rougher than hers, and she could share her mothers bed at night, if she fancied. Instead she was caught here, walking down the hall, lips pressed together, arms brimming with the flowers, trying to look as tough as she normally felt.

“I said, don’t fucking bring the game up.” Gwenog said, her voice deadly calm.

“So I’m just the first one who knows where he might be who you could find?” He grimaced and rubbed his eyes. Ohh, he was up too early. Or late? Or was it the middle of the day? “Bloody hell. What time is it?” He frowned.

“Yes, exactly. Up, up, up.” She barked, giving him a harsh look. She didn’t have any patience for laziness, which was exactly what Peter was exhibiting in her mind. “It’s one in the afternoon, Pettigrew.”

James’ eyebrows shot up high over the rim of his glasses. “Whoa, Jones!” He laughed and pulled her all the closer, if only to annoy her. “Put the claws away! Keep that up and I might get the completely ridiculous idea that that wasn’t the night of your life. Which of course it was because, let’s face it, it’s me we’re talking about. Unless you’ve also been with Sirius, in which case I admit defeat. But only then.”

The dark haired witch made a face as Potter pulled her closer, staining away playfully. In all honestly, she would take another romp with him, but if she remembered right, he and Evans were official, and that was not her style, besides he was more of a friend than anything else. “Because that would be the only ridiculous idea you’ve ever had.” She quipped rolling her eyes. As he continued about Sirius her eyes lit up. Oh, she had him now. “Well then, you best admit it.”

“Evidently not,” Marlene snarked in an undertone, responding to Gwen’s call to the idiot. “That would have required forethought, or at least some presence of mind, which he is clearly lacking.” Perhaps she was still holding a bit of a grudge about the boy’s try-out. Marlene was fairly certain that any feelings she had towards the boy, though, did not make her statement any less valid. At her friend’s addition, Marlene let out a bark of laughter reminiscent of Sirius. “And thank fuck for that,” Marlene agreed, echoing the brunette’s sentiment.

The blonde had positioned herself in a lean against the vertical edge of the window, and she arched her neck, peering towards the alcove into which the pair had disappeared. She scrunched up her nose as she listened to Gwen, nodding as she did so. “Right?” she exclaimed, turning back to Gwenog with a look of faint disgust scrawled over her features. “It’s naff.” Marlene had, admittedly, been slightly sappier than usual recently, but only on special occasions involving one Idiot Who Proved She Had Terrible Taste (known commonly as one Sirius Black); she was somewhat relieved to find the same revulsion to sappy, ‘romantic’ behaviour as ever in her arsenal. “I mean, who the fuck thinks to themself, ‘oh, let’s kneel in the middle of the bloody corridor and warble—not sing, nothing melodic, but warble, like a fuckin’ geriatric penguin—about things like love and soulmates to some poor sod’? Honestly, people these days.” Marlene shook her head in disgust, glancing back at the alcove. She rather hoped the girl was chewing the twit out for it.

If there were ever a pair not to commit any act of romance around, it was Jones and McKinnon. There was no telling who was worse, though Marlene’s laugh was rougher, but Gwen’s was sharper. “Not the only thing that one’s lacking.” She muttered, looping a slender arm around the blonde, and pulling Marlene and bit against her side. It wasn’t a romantic gesture of course, but more often than not, the ‘Puff was sprawled out across, or at the very least leaning against some girl or another. 

“Didn’t he try out for yer team?” Jones made a habit of attending all houses’ try-outs, the best way to get an early feel of who she was up against, and she had a vague memory of the foolish boy being present at one, decked out in red and gold, just like Marlene. The blonde was one hell of a player, not half as good as Gwenog of course, but still, not bad. Her joke on the other hand, was reaching, but Jones didn’t point that out, instead just leaned forward to try and peer into the alcove once more, squinting. The girl had pulled shut the curtains, and Gwenog couldn’t help but scrunch up her nose in distaste. “Fighting or fucking?” She asked, arching a brow. She hoped fighting, but they were probably knocking boots not fists, as much as she didn’t want to imagine it.

The dark haired witch scoffed, despite the fact that Terrance did have some appeal. “I said, get the fuck out. Better listen.”

Peter squinted up at her. “That’s why you woke me up? Why would I know where he is?” He mumbled and rubbed his eyes. “Might want to check with Lily. She gets to play handler for him now.”

“You two are mates.” She said, once again, as if that explained everything, and as if it should have already been painfully obvious. “If I could find her, I would have.” She stifled a smile at the thought of James bloody Potter having a handler.

“Later practices don’t usually work for us,” he explained as patiently as humanly possible for him at this point. “Gwennie,” he pouted as he sidled up to her and slipped an arm around her shoulders. “Once? For me? For old time’s sake?” He couldn’t fight the urge to waggle his eyebrows at her. “Come on. I’m irresistible.”

She couldn’t help the smile that tried to wrap it’s self around her lips. She and James weren’t what they once were, but they were something better. They were teasing, spitting insults, rivals, with grins that nearly split their bottom lip, but that didn’t erase who Gwenog was, and she was stubborn. “Old times sake?” She asked, a smirk falling into place. “You say that like I’m meant to have fond memories.” She did of course, not that she’d admit that. It hadn’t been toe curling or maddening, but it sure as hell had been something back in the day.

Peter tried to grab at his coat as she tugged it away, but latched onto the coffee as instructed instead. “Why?” He mumbled as he sat up and looked around. Hmm. He did not remember falling asleep here.

“Because I need to find James.” She said, giving the boy she’d just roused a look, like her reasoning was the most natural thing in the world.

“I always want the field later,” he protested. Mornings were the worst things ever. He didn’t function well with them at all. “Come on. I’ve been stuck with early morning practices since school started, including tryouts. Just one Saturday–please?” James might have been a prideful little prat, but he was not above begging when it came to Gwen. He doubted she’d accept anything less.

“If you wanted later practices, you should have signed up for later ones.” Gwenog said, an infectious grin on her lips. He was right that a bit of begging was the only way he would be able to get anywhere, and under normal circumstances he might have been able to get somewhere but Gwenog had been taking glee all year in making him take the earliest slots. When she’d signed up for afternoon practices two out of every three days, there had been about a hundred reasons, but fucking with James was one of them. It wasn’t that she disliked him, or was pissed, it had the same nature behind it as most of the Marauder’s pranks.

Marlene gave the boy—one whom she unfortunately had come into acquaintance with during his atrocious Quidditch trial at the start of the month—in front of her an incredulous look. “Are you—?” she began, before cutting herself off with a sigh of exasperation. The boy in question was kneeling on the ground, apparently preparing to serenade a girl standing a foot to his left, whose blush was growing steadily. “For the record,” she informed him, sidestepping him pointedly and fixing him with a look that conveyed her opinion quite aptly, “this is a terrible idea. Don’t say nobody warned you.”

Marlene had barely taken three steps before the corridor was filled with shaky warbling, and she let out a groan that stopped only as his singing did. Turning around, she saw the blushing girl dragging the boy into an annex to the side, amidst clapping. Marlene turned to her companion, raising an eyebrow. “Okay, seriously—one to ten, what’s the chance she took him aside to shut him up? ‘Cause my ears are still screaming.”

“Did you even consider the bit where serenading seems to go better when ye have a nice voice?” Gwen called out, shaking her head. “Not that I’ve had a lot of experience.” If anyone else had tacked that last bit on, it would have sounded like they were disappointed, but Gwenog, Gwenog said it like it was a blessing, she said it in the same way her mother said grace before a meal, or the way that Potter murmured Lily’s name. She should have given the poor boy some credit, he could hardly do well with the two wild haired girls heckling him, but he really wasn’t well off to begin with. 

Gwenog was sitting sideways in a window sill, parallel to the glass. Her feet were propped up, and the air smelled of smoke. Few people were less concerned about getting caught with a fag then she. “One in ten?” The dark haired girl leaned out of the sill, craning her neck to get a look in the alcove the would be couple had darted into. “I’d say one in twenty, but girls always fancy that crap more than I figure they will.”
