“How old is she now? I know Rodrik and I spoke about visiting you and Gared just as soon as we got settled in.”
“Nearly eight months old now, my lady. Well, if you do decide to visit us, we would be happy to accommodate you and your sons. I know Gared would enjoy speaking to Rodrik face-to-face again.”
“They’ve fit in perfectly here, yet I still worry. They absolutely love it here. How does your daughter fare?”
“I think that as a mother it is only natural for us to worry about our children. My daughter? Oh, she is quite well, thank you. I only wish she would stop growing so much!”
“It rarely ever snows there especially not in the summer. It was quite warm when we left, so these summer snows are a welcome change. My only worry is the possibility of the boys catching a cold.”
“I imagine it must be quite a change for you, especially given how warm the south is. I often have the same fears regarding my daughter, and she is younger than your boys. However, I am sure they will be fine, they have northern blood in them after all.”
“The boys seem to have settled in better than I thought they would You should have seen them the first time they saw the snow.”
“I’m glad to hear your sons have settled in well, Rhaenys. I imagine they must have been rather intrigued to see the snow, since I can’t imagine it snows much in the Crownlands.”

I take it he’s giving you problems again, Lyra?
“That sounds like a good idea.” Gared noticed Gwyn’s arm fall loosely to her sides, and after a short moment, he grabbed her hand and interlaced his fingers with hers. It wasn’t the most appropriate thing for a lord and lady to do in public, but he didn’t care right now. He was out with his wife on a lovely summer day; he could hold her hand if he wanted to. “Has Caitlynn given you much trouble? I know you said she’d been difficult to put down for naps recently.”Â
Gwyn was surprised when he suddenly grabbed her hand and interlaced his fingers with her own, not that she minded. They were alone in their walk, with no one to tell them otherwise; they could hold hands if they wanted to. “Caitlynn has been a bit more difficult to put down for naps lately. It seems to take her an awful long time to settle...” She responded tenderly, her voice beginning to trail off. “Other than that, she gives me very little trouble. She’s such a sweet-natured and docile babe most of the time, wouldn’t you agree? Clearly something she inherits from her father.”
Once outside, Gared could practically feel his wife’s pent-up stress melt away, as it could be seen in her features. He just smiled and nodded in return to her thanks. She probably should have been out and about before now, at least for short walks like this. “I don’t see why you can’t do this more often, or even spend some time acting as Lady, as long as you take it easy.” He took a deep breath, breathing in the scent of the nearby forest. “I can watch Caitlynn while you work.” After all, this was Gwyn’s house. She was born into it, and she had more power than him. He dealt more with the common folk than anything else.
Gwyn smiled appreciatively at her husband’s words. In truth, she had often found herself asking the same questions. “I often ask myself the same thing, Gared. You and I both know I am perfectly well to carry out my duties again.” She responded, letting her arms hand loosely by her side. “Perhaps I ought to have a word with the maester. See if he’ll agree to me spending some more time acting as Lady.” Gwyn already knew it was the maester’s doing which had kept her away from duties for so long. Even though Caitlynn’s birth had not been particularly taxing on Gwyn, he seemed to insist on her still taking time to rest, despite it being months since her daughter was born. Gwyn had never questioned his judgement before now; he was getting on in age, but he was still a fine maester.

Oh, no, I do not feel helpless anymore. A lot has changed these few years, afterall.
No, not at all. They love spending time with the other children sometimes I fear they don’t like spending time with their own mother. Perhaps in the near future I will have a daughter, so that our children may be playmates.
Oh, I am certain that is not the case, my lady. I am sure your sons care for you very much. Should you ever have a daughter I have no doubt our children would be playmates. There are so few children Caitlynn’s age in the North I am worried she will not have any children to play with as she grows.
Gared smiled solemnly at his wife then down at his sleeping daughter in the nearby crib made of ironwood. The maetser had told Gwyn to take it easy, but that was some time ago when that first began. Caitlynn was six months old now, and Gwyn was beyond ready to return to her duties as lady, but still the maester disagreed. “Let’s go for a walk,” Gared decided. “The maester can watch over Caitlynn. Some fresh air will be good for you. Plus, we can talk about you returning to your duties.”
Gwyn thought his suggestion over for a moment, before nodding her head in agreement. He was right; she had been feeling trapped in her own keep as of late, and a small stroll outside was bound to do her some good. And though the maester had told her to take it easy, she was hopeful he would not object to the walk, especially since Gared would be accompanying her.Â
Once outside, she was glad to feel her stress beginning to fade. “This is nice,” She mused to herself as they walked, inhaling deeply. “Thank you, Gared. I needed this...”

For a number of reasons, my lady. Namely because of what my father did. But he has been dead for some time now, and I’d rather not dwindle on his past mistakes for much longer.
They are well. It seems they have inherited my adventurous spirit. They love getting into trouble, but I suppose that’s normal for children their age. How is your daughter?
I am glad to hear they are doing so well, my lady. Not too much trouble I hope? Oh, she’s doing very well, thank you. She’s such a delight to Gared and I.
Thank you. Your husband will not mind all this hard work you’ve been doing for us?
My husband? Oh no, he does not mind, so long as I do not push myself too much.
Of course. Though I must ask, why are you so eager to help? Most people run the other way hearing the word.
I know what it’s like to feel helpless. I know I can’t offer much, but knowing that I can at least help you in a small way, is reassuring to hear.
I felt the same way after my babes were born. Rodrik would never let me do anything. You should not feel guilty, my lady.
I suppose you are right. Speaking of your babes, how are they? I imagine they must be getting rather big now.
