You walk into these rooms where there’s so much pressure and you’re so desperate to succeed and not completely humiliate yourself. There’s so many people that are trying to do the same thing and you have to prove to the people in that room that you can do it differently– that was more of the challenge, being such a small fish in such a big pond.

So apparently if you show up late for soundcheck one time… you forever get a babysitter to take you to and from all future soundchecks. Fun.

Thanks, but I kinda doubt it’ll work. I don’t really believe in that kinda thing. Hmm, hot chocolate I could definitely be into. And food’s even better. I might take you up on that offer. I like the festival food, but sometimes you need something different.

The crossing your fingers and toes thing? Me neither, honestly. But I do believe in putting out good energy and having it return to you in some way, so maybe my hoping will help there somehow. If there’s hot chocolate, I’m sure I’ve also got mini marshmallows and whipped cream stashed somewhere too. Exactly! It’s good to switch it up sometimes and we’ll have the festival food here for months. It might be nice to have a proper meal sometime.

Exactly! They’re what people hold on to and it resonates with them, reminding them of a particular moment or relationship. I think my favorite part of performing would be that moment when you could stop singing and the fans would continue where you left off. The whole stadium would fill with their voices, reciting your lyrics, your words, back to you.

I suppose that is true, but I haven’t known him to be anything but honest either. You’re far too kind, Emi. If it’s ever used, I’ll send the song for your approval.

          “So my mother thinks I’ve gone insane according to her latest skype call. And that I’m not getting near enough sleep working on tour.” The latter may have been the truth but the first certainly wasn’t true. And Cadence didn’t really care about the lack of sleep if it meant getting things done right. “That’s probably all moms though, right?”

They are usually very protective and I’m sure we’re all a little bit insane for doing the jobs that we do.

So a fan just walked up to me and asked if she could have a lock of my hair… Does that mean we’ve officially made it or something? Or is it just a creepy story that I now have in my life? Because either way, I’m not into it.

I suppose I’m glad she’d asked first and hadn’t just cut it off..There are instances of that having happened as well.

Rei’s eyebrows furrowed, frustrated with himself. She was in a better place now than when he last saw her. It had been months and months since he last saw her and she had changed – she was sober, unlike him. “I’m sorry,” he apologized, “I forgot – you’re clean now.” He stood there awkwardly before rubbing the back of his neck with his hand. “You look good, Hope,” he told her in a genuine way, hoping that she got the ‘i’m happy for you,’ gesture without him actually having to say the words.

She had been warned about this, there were rumors circulating of his presence on the tour before she’d committed herself to it, countless discussions had afterwards with her counselor if this was the best place to be after a year in of therapy. It wouldn’t be easy, she was told, but she would be able to keep herself busy and Rei had never been the root of her troubles, just someone who’d hung around for the ride, neither encouraging the behavior or otherwise, doing what he could to take care of her. A genuine smile fit her lips when he apologized, though she waved it away, cheerfully adding a “thank you” at his words. “I feel good, better,” she admitted, studying him. “What about you? How have you been?”

Nope, I definitely didn’t. Some of us are just born into it. Kinda something I’ve been dealing with for a long time, so I’m pretty used to it. Just not a fan of people asking for favors. Cool. Not much of a tea or book person, but I guess I could give it a try if I’m in the area.

I’m sure there’s some hot chocolate mix around there somewhere too and if not, I’m capable of making food if you’re ever hungry and wanting something a little different than what the festival’s offering.

“I got a burger from a food truck. And everyone else seems to be taking their jobs less seriously than I am, which is insanely frustrating, but I am going with the flow, so to speak.”

“You’re keeping the tour going singlehandedly,” she teased. “We’re all very grateful for the work you’ve been doing, so it’s not going unnoticed. Is it the crew or musicians you’re having trouble with?”

Well, not super big. I’m from just outside Albany? And I never want to head back, if this is the view I’m going to get every night.

“We might just have to find you a permanent gig then,” she offered teasingly with a chuckle. “Maybe one of the musicians wouldn’t mind you shadowing them with a spotlight for their day to day interactions.”

What makes you think I’ll have it with me by the time I visit everything else? If there’s food in my hand chances are it’ll be gone within the first five minutes.

Wishful thinking and assumptions, but those aren’t working for me, clearly. Maybe buy extra and stash them in your bag as snacks for the rest of your rounds. I’m sure you’re bound to find another food stall on your way before you run out.

Lyrics would be preferable to faces, I’d think. I wonder if the merch booths have already started working on this without our knowledge.

I’m sure if I’d asked him, he’d say it was the opposite. But I like that..”it’s so exhilarating to be someone’s melody”...if you didn’t mind, maybe I’ll use it in a song someday.

Aubrey crossed her arms over her chest, “Yeah, definitely. They seem really into each other, like when they’re onstage it’s just the two of them in the world. I think that’s sweet. It’s hard to let that happen. I hope their surge to popularity doesn’t change that.”

Being in the business, I think it changes people and their relationships, sometimes for the better, but not always, and so there’s always a concern of how it could affect a couple that’s involved both in business and personally, but..as their consultant, I’m not worried. We’ll find a way to cross that bridge if it ever becomes necessary, but for now, they seem to be in a good place and I don’t anticipate that changing.

Brushing herself off and standing upright for a moment, Thea noticed the amused look on the girl’s face and began to scowl, hunching her shoulders. She was embarrassed, especially after realizing that the one who’d caught her was none other than Hope Taylor – one of the many unwitting spotlight-attracters that Thea spent her time avoiding. “Yeah, fine, I’m good,” Thea said, trying to sound as friendly as possible in her current mood. “You’re good?”

A trip was nothing to be embarrassed or concerned about, but the drinking was what caught her attention. It was early, but they were at a music festival, where the booze was plentiful and most of the other attendees had had a few drinks as well. She tried to wipe the worry from her features as she smiled and helped steady the other girl, nodding her head. “I’m fine,” she reassured. “No harm, no foul. I’m sorry, have we met?” she added, doing a mental flip through of the names and faces she had decided to learn when joining the tour, but not recalling the girl’s, though the face seemed rather familiar.
