The main reasons for these “algorithms” that Instagram, Facebook and Twitter have rolled out are manipulating what people see. Content they want you to see gets pushed to the top, anything threatening to their interests gets quietly tossed to the bottom so you’ll be too tired or bored to see it.

Remember that time Facebook did the exact same thing, then conducted illegal psychosocial experiments on it’s users by tampering with their activity feeds to make depressing posts, happy posts, etc. show up more often to manipulate the emotional states of their users?

I like to joke around about Richard Hendricks being a little brat, but I honestly have some real complex emotions about him. He’s this character who instinctively avoids conflict and has learned to compartmentalize his feelings, his anger, his ideas, all for the sake of flying under the radar and not disturbing anyone. And that shit probably got all tangled up and mangled and repressed inside him.

It’s not that he’s bad or malicious, it’s just that he’s never learned how to express the negative feelings, so he swings erratically between the two— passive Richard and petty/aggressive Richard.

And then Pied Piper happens. He’s forced to step up to the plate. To openly be an asshole at times. He has to learn who to be an asshole to and who not to be an asshole to.

And lord does he try his best.

He’s awkward and self-effacing, but he’s forced to learn how to navigate the hell hole that is Silicon Valley because he has ambitions. He has dreams. He has goals that he wants to achieve and impact the lives of others for the greater good.

But he needs to learn how to separate himself, his own ego, from that process. It’s not that he doesn’t appreciate the people around him, it’s that he doesn’t know how like a normal person, because any emotion that makes him feel something stronger than Mild Salsa Level is Big and Scary and Unknown.

And I just really love Richard Hendricks, okay? He’s such a good character. He tries so hard. He’s so fucked up in his own inverse, uncomfortable, gawky way, but he doesn’t let that stop him from striving to achieve, to improve. From trying to do the right thing.

Of all the things Richard has done on the show, the worst is his corruption of Jared, someone who quit a promising but morally compromised job and endured diminished living circumstances in the quest to work on a true innovation as part of a decent company. The series has mined incredibly funny jokes from Jared’s asides about what sounds like a horrifying childhood, including this week, his objection to the Hooli-Con scheme on the grounds that “As a product of forced adoption, I can assure you there are consequences!” But all these jokes add up to a sobering point: Jared has worked much harder than anyone on the show to build a decent life for himself, and Richard has effectively joined the list of his abusers and exploiters.
