despite my praise for the emotional layer of haikyuu i'd like to say that i think the manga and show doesn't do the female characters justice at all.
yes, kiyoko does get development later on but that doesn't make up for the fact that throughout the whole show at least she was characterized very flat and more as an accessory to the male characters. i'm not completely sure if this is as strongly the case in the manga as well since i've read it years ago, but i've rewatched the anime so many times and it appears very clearly that the writers were very biased in how they handled all female characters but especially kiyoko. it's also glossed over in the show and by the fandom how male characters keep harassing her as it's passed off as "boys will be boys" (and yes, i love nishinoya and tanaka but they're part of the problem)
that's just my opinion though obviously and im very interested in what other people think. kinda scared to not make this ask anonymous bc in the 2020 fandom i could've not said this at all 😭
the thing is that since haikyuu is so male dominated character wise, it leaves little space for the female characters to be given their moments (which is frustrating, don’t get me wrong).
while tanaka and nishinoya are indeed part of the problem, what made me annoyed is that people brushed off terushima harassing kiyoko.
haikyuu is incredibly emotionally aware, reflected and open for a franchise aimed at mostly teenage boys. the portrayal of friendship, personal drive and loss is amazing. boys are shown to cry after they lose games and sometimes their motivations are completely trivial but it doesn't matter because the focus is on what they feel and not what happened. i definitely prefer this over the heavily exaggerated trope of "their whole family got slayed", instead it's shown how something rather small can affect someone's whole view on themselves and their environment (e.g. hinata seeing the tiny giant on tv or tsukishima seeing his brother cheering on his team instead of playing).
in my opinion haikyuu isn't about volleyball or sports but rather about personal growth and character focused (expressed through sports)
well said, anon. I honestly don’t have anything to add because you said it so wonderfully.
the season 4 Training Camp „incident“ doesn’t deserve the hate it gets because, yes, it may be embarrassing, but it’s ultimately the turning point for Hinata‘s character where he decides and realizes that he needs to really learn the fundamentals. And without him breaking into the Shiratorizawa training camp there would be no Brazil Arc
i 100% agree with you because while i also got secondhand embarrassment from him breaking into the camp, i also understood that he really needed that arc to be able to grow as a volleyball player and hone on his induvial skill
