Real Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund | FIFA Club World Cup | 05.07.2025
Official announcement
Xabi Alonso signed a 3 year contract with Real Madrid.
The former Real Madrid player returns to the club’s first team after bidding farewell in 2014, when he joined Bayern Munich. In 2018, he began his managerial career with Real Madrid Infantil A, where he led the team to a flawless league title: 25 wins, 1 draw, 0 losses, and an average of six goals per match.
Following that success, Alonso took charge of Real Sociedad B. He finished fifth in his debut season, earned promotion from Segunda Division B to LaLiga 2 in his second year, but faced relegation back to the third tier after finishing 20th the following season.
In October 2022, he became head coach of Bayer Leverkusen. His first season ended with a 6th-place Bundesliga finish, group-stage elimination from the Champions League, a Europa League semifinal appearance, and an early exit from the DFB-Pokal at the hands of a Bundesliga 2 team. His second season was remarkable—Leverkusen recorded 43 wins, 9 draws, and just 1 loss across 53 matches, with the only defeat coming in the Europa League final. They also lifted the DFB-Pokal and dominated domestically.
In his final season with Leverkusen, Alonso led the team to a second-place Bundesliga finish, a DFB-Pokal semifinal, and a round of 16 exit in the Champions League against Bayern Munchen after finishing sixth in the group stage.
Welcome back Xabi!
