Walking Into the Evening
Taken on an Apple iPhone 5 at Old Sarum, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England • 15 February 2015
There are some photographs that become more meaningful with time.
When I took this, it was simply an evening spent watching the sunset from the earthworks at Old Sarum. It was just my son and me, with nowhere else we needed to be until the light had gone.
Looking back now, I realise I wasn’t photographing the sunset at all. I was photographing a moment I’d want to remember.
Life was changing in ways I couldn’t yet see clearly, but for an hour none of that seemed to matter. There was just the fading sky, the quiet, and a silhouette walking ahead.
Memory has never been perfectly sharp.
Maybe that’s why this photograph still feels true.
