Billy Bragg & Wilco // California Stars

Weary Bones

In 1997, Wilco decamped to Dublin to set unused Woody Guthrie lyrics to original music, all under the care of British folk singer Billy Bragg. It’s an odd turn for a band that was starting to shake free of their country roots on Being There; ironically enough, the Mermaid Avenue sessions would point the way towards the more post-modern Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

Jay Bennett—whose previous band Titanic Love Affair was named after a Guthrie lyric—convinced Tweedy to take part, but the band soon butted heads with Bragg. Naturally, Bragg took to Guthrie’s political words, but Wilco found the “freak weirdo” in Guthrie. Wilco’s songs across the various Mermaid Avenue releases are pretty fun—“Hoodoo Voodoo,” “Christ For President,” “Joe DiMaggio Done It Again”—and they sound like they’re consciously taking the piss out of Bragg’s somber intonations against fascists and union busters (Tweedy vs. Farrar all over again). 

For Tweedy, the personal is political, and he finds some real messy humanity in half-century old lyrics. On “Airline To Heaven,” “Remember The Mountain Bed,” and especially “California Stars,” Wilco taps back into an almost psychedelic side of folk music—“the old, weird America,” as noted critic/gasbag Greil Marcus termed it. They even tip their cap to Dylan, another folky who got tired of folk music’s constraints: “One By One” should owe royalties to “Time Passes Slowly.”

At the very end of Vol. II, Wilco move even further from the template with the impressionistic “Someday Some Morning Sometime.” With its deconstructed atmosphere, it sounds like a dress rehearsal for what was to come.
