RED and BLU team up when team alignments were still not set in stone that takes them out of their tiny respawn range. John ends up fighting the huge tankish character 1-1. They duke it out and for a while it looks like the other tankish character is going to win and John’s hammer slips from his hand. In the end it looks like John died but of course when the dusts settles he’s alive and he shakily rises to his feet takes his hammer back into grasp and just raises in the air and there’s this huge sigh of relief from both sides.

Boy howdy, what a time to be alive and remember that John actually killed his team Medic during a fit rage in a old fashioned duel outside of respawn in Teufort and had to physically be pulled away from smashing what little flesh mush was left of him. Freud was the only person able to dig under John’s skin and he was often chided for being too gentle, too friendly towards the BLU team once factions had been more solidly grounded. So in a way, the Doctor got what he wanted. 

    That’s not to say Freud didn’t put up a good fight. John was left with a punctured lung and were it not for adrenaline and purpose of seeing his family again John would have died along with him. Instead John carried out what he set on doing from the start, which was leave Teufort and spend what little time he had left with his daughter and wife though sadly it was no longer his own terms.

Of all the jobs thrust to newly formed RED and BLU it justhad to be a train heist. It was on the rails that John had laid down the tracksand it was here again (a deadman) that he found himself. It was funny how fatedecided to play out. Left digits dig tightly into the grooves of the metaldoors while right holds still the heavy hammer at his side. Even above theraucous shriek of the metallic beast he’d heard his friend clear enough.Marriage.

“Mister Tobias, sir, congratulations.” He speaks against thesharp whistle of wind that’s making his ears go numb. John says nothing of theodd time, or wrong place. It’s in the beat of chaos that they’ve found theirstride. John smiled. “To tell you th’ truth, sir, I might’ve suspected.”  The signs were unmistakable, John thoughtright when he guessed that there was something odd when he’d heard the soft sighs and extra bounce to his friend’s step.

Wrenching the metallic doors open John pulls himself insidequickly. Eyes locking briefly with the those of an unsuspecting worker theHeavy moves swiftly, a large fist crunching into the nose of the poor manbefore there could be time to react. John catches the worker by the front ofhis overalls before his body can thump against the metal cart stashing the itin some obscure corner. After making sure their efforts had not garnered theattention of anyone else John pokes his head outside giving a safe signal tousher Tobias inside.

"You... You're one of them old Heavies, right? John... John Henry?" (blu-boxing-babe)

Brows rise for a moment pleasant surprise flashing on features before lips upturn in a soft grin. Heavy. It’s a name he hasn’t been called in a years and the single word makes him pause. Through all the years John may have shrunk in height it was never his stature alone that made the presence of the giant and after all these years the ex-Heavy still looms. The head of of his hammer (still kept close by after all these years) is swung from shoulder to rest on the soft earth with a small thump and John leans forward on it’s handle looking over the visitor curiously. 

“Yes’m ‘s  just John now though ain’t been a Heavy for a long time.” John chuckles, a soft rumble from the chest that makes weathered eyes wrinkle even more. Though he has more than a few questions churning in his head he keeps them to himself for now. A domestic life on with his family now passed far out in the country left little in the way of news, especially those of the Mann Brothers. “You must’ve gone a little outta your ways t’ go ‘n find me ‘n I’d be lying if I didn’t say I were a might curious as  to who you are..”

“Mister Tobias.”

The beloved hammer, as always, is kept close at hand, swung to rest on a giant shoulder. But, kept even closer in a pocket close to his chest was something held more dear. A gentle smile upturns lips and he neither confirms nor denies Tobias’ fears. Termination. It would be a lie to say he hadn’t given the idea more than a thought and in his heart, he could feel that the time to step down was soon. But that was for another time, for that was not a goodbye had taught himself to face just yet.

Though ties to the teams were beginning to feel more and more like a tightened noose he wouldn’t deny that Tobias was a dear friend and each word rang sincere. “You’ve only got to look around, sir. This place, it’s full o’ problems what you made an’ fixed.”

John lingers just outside for a few moments more before crouching low through the doorway to let himself in, settling into a familiar corner. Strange how even sloughing through years of blood lust for the brother’s feud had not dulled the sense of wonder and awe he found ticking in the workshop all those years ago. Stranger still, how there was no gear, scrap of paper, or machine that he had to worry about crushing under foot. Eyes pull away from the unsettling tidiness of the room and settle on the Engineer. It was clear there was another problem, and he didn’t need to be learned to know that if a solution was to be found, it would be. 

“So you’ll be able to fix this too.”

“There could be no safer hands than your own, Mister Tobias. “His voice hardens, bordering on a warning, brows creasing a bit as amber hues follow Tobias’ gaze. John scrutinizes the Engineer for a good few seconds his grip on the hammer’s handle tightening into a vice and only after more tense seconds of hesitation pass does it finally slacken. “But I’ll do my best.”

Slowly, John’s posture relaxes, the wrinkles in his brow smoothing. A silent laugh manifests in a small shake of the head and a smile almost apologetic. It seemed the day’s end would be full of surprises, “Pull up a barrel, sir.”

The hammer is shifted from his lap to the left hand and held out to the Engineer, the right outstretching for whatever Tobias had in mind. “What was is it that you originally came here for then?”

'Will not make an orphan of my daughter' so do you have children John?

A wide and warm smile so unfitting for someone still flecked in the still fresh ichor the rival team. Another days work had passed and a sheen of dirt, sweat, and blood clung to John’s skin. All tension in his shoulders relax, everyday here in this unforgiving wasteland would always be dedicated to her. Thoughts are drawn back to the cozy abode where his wife was waiting and to the little one clutching at her skirts. The warm eyes and little smile that would always have him undone. 

“I do.” Two little words yet there’s something deeper than pride behind sonorous voice. “She writes, you know. Learned it from her mother.” John would receive letters from her in the post along with rations that came by train every few months. 

It didn’t matter that he couldn’t read the large and clumsy letters she wrote. Each letter was kept all the same, because he knew that at the very end of those letters would always be signed with her love.

While the sun set, and splashes of orange and red huespainted the desert sky seconds stretched into minutes and then hours–time feltlost. The desert beauty was lost on John. While he’d normally spare a momentto look up at the desert sky tonight was different. They’d won.

The giant could only stare at the well-worn hammer lost inthought, hypnotized by the embedded stains of crimsons. With gentle actionhammer is laid into lap with a heavy sigh. It wouldn’t work. It never did. Andtomorrow it would again have a fresh crimson sheen. Still, he would try like healways did. An attempt to scrub dried viscera from the hammers chipped surface.A welcome distraction and a poor attempt to forget.

The fortress was surprisingly quiet, no rambunctious shoutsor the odd gunfire. The RED team was taking the celebration to town and most likelyknocked out from victory drinks. At the familiar voice falling to his ears, apleasant smile tugs on his lips, tired eyes tearing away from the hammer. The Heavy nods giving a small laugh, “You’ve heard right.” John leaves it as simple asthat, elaborating no further. A fondness deeply rooted from… before. “Mister Tobias, sir, it’s a surpriseseeing you out of your workshop.”
