I was introduced to Banks (the singer, not the buildings) by my friend, colleague and mutual music admirer Lizbeth. I didn't even know I was listening to Banks for a long time, the songs were just on occasionally in the office. But now I know. And I like. This song is especially poignant at present. Yup, Lissie again. She's awesome, get over it. This is another cover that just rocks my effing socks off. A later-in-the-day post than I normally do, so let's see if that impacts how many people view it and then if I get any extra views on previous days' posts. Let's call it an experiment. A rock experiment. Of awesomeness.
Long before I got corpulent and unable to be lifted up by people, I used to 'crowd-surf' at 'gigs'. None are more fondly remembered than the few occasions I was lucky enough to catch Terrorvision perform before they disbanded. And luckily it was also before they became a poppy crowd-pleaser with songs like 'Tequila'. 'Discotheque Wreck' was always one of my favourites, and in the absence of a proper music video, some genius has put the music to some clips from Soul Train. Inspired.
Today's video is dedicated to the Rock-iest girl I know, the inimitable @Kirsty_Crawford, on her birthday. As a punchy song to start the day, this has long been a fave. Have a superb tuesday everyone, and may it be as awesome as it is cold.
If you're going to wake up with a song stuck in your head, which i seem to do quite often, there are few more cheerful ways to start the week than Huey Lewis and the News, and moreso if it's 'Hip to be Square'. Greetings, and welcome to a new week. I have a feeling it's going to be fabulous.
Today is a horrible, wet, miserable shit of a day, and so I shall do very little other than sit around humming this song and occasionally drying the cat's paws. Happy Sunday everybody!
I found myself awake in the middle of the night with Brimful of Asha stuck in my head. So I was going to post the Fatboy Slim version of that today. But then I thought, if I'm going to post a Fatboy Slim track, I want to go for the one with the best video. So, here's my favourite Cowbell-lover dancing his little socks off.
Love a bit of Faith No More, and this is, in my opinion, their best track. Too tired to wax lyrical about it, just listen/watch and adore. Happy end of the frickin' week people!
My all time favourite RHCP song. I'm not always a fan of a long track, but the way this one is split into almost two different songs makes it work. And I just find the music SO good. Properly showing off the talents of the band. Shame there's no video though...
Paloma Faith seems to be musical Marmite. I personally love her. Her voice is incredible, and as a person I find her hilarious*. This cover of INXS's 'Never Tear Us Apart' is, in my opinion, a hundred times better than the original. The video also catches Paloma's superb showmanship. I'd love to go see her on stage, but the moment always seems to elude. *check youtube for any of her appearances on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, her and Noel Fielding are like a perfect partnership of bonkers.
After yesterday's return to my younger days, I listened to some other 'oldies' on my commute. This one still stands out, and is one of my favourite tracks from an album that can turn me into a 15 year-old within about a minute and a half of listening. If you don't love this song, and the video, you weren't a teenager in the mid 90's.
I Spy is my favourite Pulp song after Common People. It's as far from Common People and most other Pulp songs as you can get, and both muscially and lyrically superb. There was no video made for it though, but on Youtube I stumbled across this one, where some Spanish chap has set the track to scenes from an old German spy movie, and also transcribed the Spanich translation of the lyrics. Utterly bonkers, but seems to work really well!
I love Me First. They take incredible songs and make them equally as incredible but totally different. This is probably my favourite of their covers. It somehow gives one of the most melancholy songs a huge amount of energy, while keeping the message intact. Love it. I will probably be found singing along to this at least once a week in my car.
Absolutely love this track. As good if not better than old Garbage stuff, and a good video to boot. The Shirley Manson influence, and involvement with, the album is clear, and makes it awesome. Rock on the weekend!
I know I started this blog with a Lissie track, but: A - She has got one of the most incredible voices I've heard B - This is one of her best songs for showing off that voice C - This live version is superb. I make no apologies. Happy Friday people!
I have never been a big Massive Attack fan, and couldn't name more than one or two of their songs, but Teardop is just such a classic. Covered numerous times, but never bettered, and with an eerily watchable video. Enjoy!
I've loved the Black Keys for a while now, but this is still my favourite song. It starts so well, and then when it drops after a minute it just gets more incredible. It's one of those songs that just makes me wish I played drums.
