“yeah, well we have more important things to do than overpopulate the earth. we have companies to make, we have change to make, i’m not just gonna sit and be a stay-at-home mom. how unfulfilling.” sofia didn’t understand what was so bad about not being a kid person. she just didn’t see the need for them. “you could just teach your kid how to act. my parents taught me manners.”
“well, change starts with people raising their children correctly. research has proven that having a parent at home is beneficial for younger and older children. kids do better at school and have less behavioral problems.” reciting off some facts always made hannah feel just a little bit better. she spent a lot of time with her head buried in articles. “apparently, your parents didn’t teach you manners given your compulsion to preach ignorance.” she muttered.
ezraburke.
sighing for dramatic effect – and to make hannah laugh, because that was one thing he’d always loved doing, even from a young age – ezra conceded. “you’re right, im twenty three years old and they’d probably still find a way to ground me,” he laughed.
another loud burst of laughter escaped through her lips and hannah nodded in agreement. “you’re the baby. they’ll always find a way to ground you.” she chuckled. “are you still on their phone plan? because that’s the first thing i would do with my kid, whenever i have them.”
svnsoaked.
“ at this point, i think you wouldn’t be ‘babysitting’ them so much as just ‘hanging out’ with them, ” he laughs. it was weird to think that even his youngest child was an adult now — legally, at least, though rhett knew from firsthand experience that growing up was a lifelong process. “ speaking of hanging out with my kids, though— ” rhett shifts the topic of conversation with a grin. “ last i checked, leon was single … you’re single … ” he allows the implication to hang in the space between them, eyebrows raised with mischievous delight.
“i don’t know, i feel like i still get to think of them as kids.” not that she had actually known any of them as children but that was beside the point. hannah was still older than all of them though barely with the oldest which rhett seemed to rather enjoy. her eyebrows formed high arches in her forehead. “what happened to that old adage about dads wanting their kids to never date?” she questioned. “you’re bad! maybe i don’t want to date anyone, did you ever think about that?” oh, what a terrible attempt of lying.
ezraburke.
“hey! i could be a bad boy if i wanted to!” ezra said, petulant pout on his lips. it was all in good fun, of course, and he couldn’t help but break out into his trademark smile within a matter of seconds. “okay, fine, maybe like a sweet bad boy? i’ll tp peoples houses and then help them clean it up.”
laughter spilled easily from hannah’s lips at his teasingly defensive response, a hand coming up to cover it though it did nothing to stifle the sound of the giggles. “you’re just sweet. you would not tp a house. that’s wasteful, first of all! and secondly, can you imagine your fathers reactions to such shenanigans?”
ezraburke.
“i promise,” ezra said, grin on his face because he meant it. he had always prided himself on being trustworthy, on being able to keep all kinds of secrets, big and small. he had always told his dads everything, though this wasn’t his secret to tell, and was safe with him. “i think it matches my aesthetic, you know? bad boy tattoo artist with long hair. i definitely need to keep growing it.”
loud laughter spilled from hannah’s lips at the answer that ezra offered her, unable to help herself as the corners of her lips curled upward and dimpled one of her cheeks. “bad boy?” she echoed his word choice. “who are you trying to convince of that? surely this place is too small to get away with it! everyone knows how sweet you are.”
svnsoaked.
the father in him aches to disapprove of her noncommittal ‘maybe’ — sleep is a necessity, he wants to chide her. regardless of how absolutely adorable the baby is. — but he suspects that hannah’s time with her niece is made more special by the finite amount they have together, and he can’t fault her for wanting to spend every second possible with ellie. the toddler’s laughter brings a bright smile to rhett’s face then, pulling him from his thoughts. “ i wish i could have had you as a babysitter when my kids were younger, ” he joked. “ i would’ve given anything to have someone keep an eye on them while i caught up on my sleep. ”
as ellie takes a curly handful of her hair and gives it a tug, hannah shifted her over to one hip and pulled it out of her grip so she doesn’t get too attached to tugging on it. babysitting was rather easy for her given all of the time that she already spent around children and it only made her excited at the prospect of one day having some of her own when she found herself in the right relationship. “i’d still babysit if they would let me,” she laughed. “ezra is still just a baby as far as i’m concerned. i guess one or two of them are basically my age, but i still feel obligated to coddle them just because i can.”
ezraburke.
“i think you’ve got the whole town fooled,” ezra said, cheeky smile on his face. he knew it was only a small thing, a tiny secret that wouldn’t hurt anyone, but he knew the value of privacy, especially when it felt like everyone in town knew your business. “but i won’t tell anyone! my lips are sealed.”
“thank you,” hannah beamed. “just especially don’t tell your father, i think it would break rhett’s heart if he didn’t hear it from me.” she teased. the smile didn’t falter from her lips as she reached up, gently touching a strand of ezra’s darker hair. “and what are you going to do about all of this, hmm? it’s getting so long!”
magicruined.
sofia raised her eyebrows at hannah’s questions. “why would i ever voluntarily spend time with children?” she asked, as if she would rather be doing anything else other than spending time with kids. “i didn’t ask for a child psychology lesson. just ask her if she can like…not scream, so i can enjoy my meal.”
“i swear, everyone your age seems to feel that way nowadays,” hannah commented with a shake of her head as if she’d lived in any other generation to know differently. sometimes she felt like an oldie. “she’s just a kid. people don’t let their children scream in public because it’s fun. a life lesson for you: the parent with the crying child is always more distressed by the situation than an observer. it's ridiculous to think you can stop a crying kid by complaining.”
ezraburke.
with a dramatic gasp and a hand over his heart, ezra took a tiny step back, as if he was hurt, before bursting out into a tiny fit of giggles. “my whole life has been a lie,” he said, smile on his face as wide as ever.
she let another laugh slip past her lips and tossed a red curl of hair over her shoulder with her free hand. “you’ve only known me for a few years!” hannah pointed out. “besides, i like to think that i’m pale and freckled enough that it’s quite deceiving to the outside eye.”
ezraburke.
ezra smiled as the girl in hannah’s arms made happy baby noises when given the love and attention of her aunt. he’d always adored kids, had always said that, if the tattoo business didn’t work out for him, he’d try his hand at teaching art to young ones. this entire encounter had warmed his heart – seeing hannah looking so happy and in her element was enough to make him feel like the day was going to be a good one. “oh, please, i’m sure you were the cutest ginger baby in the world,” ezra said, beaming at the woman he’d always looked up to.
her fingers smoothed over the little girl’s hair before hannah shifted to hold her on one hip so she could have a hand free for a moment, letting ellie face ezra a little more. children are her age were always fascinated by novel things and people around them. “i’m going to let you in on my deepest, darkest secret that not even your fathers know about,” she started with a sly smile, stepping closer dramatically and glancing around as if it were dangerous. “i’m not a natural ginger. i’ve been dying my hair like this since i finished medical school.”

‘ not at all, it’s my pleasure, ’ he grinned, hand outstretched to hers as he placed the scrap in her palm. once he had done so, he began pulling faces at the youngster again, whilst babbling gibberish to her. ‘ that’s fair enough and you’re right but you should still take the offer into consideration because you never know when an emergency might arise. ’ awkward shuffles, hums and ahhs followed suit as the boy scratched his head, already aware that whatever he said from this point forward wouldn’t have much of an impact on her stubbornness. ‘ aw, that’ll be nice. i’m planning the same thing too but it might be a little more difficult for me than you, i suppose, ’ he sighed, his deeply-rooted maternal nature rearing its ugly head incredibly intensely today.
hannah glanced down at the piece of paper that he handed her with the number before folding it in half and tucking it into the front pocket of her jeans. “and that is why i will keep your number safe and sound, just in case,” she patted her pocket. it was unlikely that anything would come up given that her life was usually pretty safe and predictable, just the way that she liked it to be, but it never hurt to have extra precautions padded into place. “why would it be more difficult for you than for me?” she questioned innocently. “you’re young –– like, what, early twenties? you still have your entire life in front of you! you can do whatever you want. there’s just so much room for you to live.”
ezraburke.
“i’m the cute one of the family, you can say it,” ezra said, his boyish and charming grin on his face. though he’d never admit it out loud, he often got his own way because of the fact that he was the youngest – it seemed as if nobody could resist his youth, his dimples, and he learnt how to use that to his advantage from a young age, even with people outside of his immediate family. “i’m sure this little one is the cutest of yours, though, besides you” ezra said, bringing his attention back to the little girl wiggling in hannah’s arms.
“oh sure, i’ll let you take that title,” hannah agreed with a nod of her head and an easy laugh spilling from her glossed lips. she was so fond of the entire burke family and given that ezra was the baby of the burkes, well, he held a special place in her heart as if he was the baby sibling of her own family. a little ironic given that in her own adulthood she wasn’t that close with her own biological family. “oh, she’s so much cuter than me,” she laughed, kissing the little one’s cheeks. “i was not cute when i was little. i grew into it.”

“i feel like i need to remind you everyday that i’m twenty-three,” ezra said, giggling, though he didn’t mind. he was the baby of the family and used to all of the attention and affection that came along with that title. he’d be lying if he said he didn’t secretly love it. “i’m sure my dads have, like, a thousand photos they’d be willing to show you.”
“well when i was twenty-three, you were only twelve.” hannah declared with an amused grin. knowing that he was the youngest of eli and rhett’s clan only made her that much more inclined to dote fondly on his youth. “oh, of course they do. i’m surprised rhett hasn’t shown me all of them for all of you already, actually. but you’ve still got that boyish youth and charm.”
