Lomnitz left for the UK in 1933 after Nazi antisemitic laws came into force.

Painted shortly after his arrival, this work stages a vivid interplay between the outline of a figure and a page from the Evening Standard, tying the body to a new reality in Britain.

Despite building a new life in the UK, Lomnitz was interned in 1940 as an 'enemy alien' at Huyton Camp in Liverpool when Churchill's policy of mass internment swept him up.
