🌟 intro and disclaimer for my Chinese folk religion resource guides 🌟

hey!! I’m Max and I’m a Chinese American witch building my craft around Han Chinese folk religion (CFR) traditions. thanks for stopping by!

I started learning about CFR this year bc the European neopagan practices I explored (Hellenic, Norse, etc) are lovely, but they aren’t my traditions. I wanted to build a practice that felt right. as I learn about CFR, I learn more Cantonese (so I can speak to my grandparents!) and come home to their practices (which my Christian-converted family has denied as superstition all my life.)

resources about ancient Chinese religion are really hard to come by. I want to share what I’m learning so anyone can learn more about their Chinese heritage or find a parallel for their own heritage discovery/learning. learning about CFR has been a big fat homecoming for me, lovely and badass and affirming in the most surprising ways, and I hope it’ll be meaningful for you too. 💓

howdy folks, I know I’ve pretty much disappeared completely from this blog and the witchy scene in general. I don’t know if I’m coming back completely, I’ve certainly grown up loads during this hiatus, and I no longer feel comfortable to be considered an authority on anything or to be asked for advice. I was really young when I did all of those things and in a sense was a way for me to feel important with nothing much to offer. But that wasn’t the final word that the book gave on the subject.

To present that scene without further commentary goes against the entire point that Avatar: The Promise was making.  

Consider: you’re looking at a comic written by a Chinese-American author (Gene Luen Yang), drawn by two Japanese women (Studio Gurihiru) that primarily illustrate American books, based on an American cartoon that was done in a style reminiscent of Japanese anime (which in turn can be partly traced back to American cartoons), helmed by two Caucasian Americans (Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino), who drew heavily from Inuit, Japanese, Chinese, and Tibetan cultures for inspiration.

The Promise was about Aang trying to clean up the mess left when cultures that had been traditionally separated ended up being mixed (by force), with a particular emphasis on the colonies that the Fire Nation had left in the Earth Kingdom.  His initial instinct was to just try to put things back the way they were and make the Fire Nation citizens leave, but he ultimately he realized that wasn’t possible, because he was dealing with actual people and not abstract concepts.  There were children raised in two cultures, people from different cultures in love, people who had never set foot in the nation they were being told they had to return to in order to make everything neat and tidy.  Aang ultimately rejected the calls to keep every nation/culture separate and instead created Republic City, where people could share and mix their cultures.

As for the Air Nomad Fan Club?

There are absolutely jackasses out there making a mockery of other cultures, or who want to just exploit a culture for profit, discarding it like gum that’s lost its flavor when they can’t get any more money out of it.  But when you go beyond condemning that and decide that only the most dominant cultures can be shared, appreciated, reinterpreted, and spread, then you effectively hand a death sentence to all other cultures. 

Cultural exchange and expansion should be made with respect, empathy, and genuineness, yes, but it cannot be simply shut down point blank. Genuine appreciation and interest needs to be accepted and guided in a positive direction.  The point of The Promise was ultimately that people cannot be neatly put into boxes and told to stick to their own nation and culture. They will make friends, they will fall in love, and cultures will mix, change, and adapt. That’s human nature.

(The OP did touch on some of this in a later post, but it’s worth expanding on)

Energy reading for Hanwitchx

I see a core, and an external layer. For some reason the core was what I saw first. Calm and soothing. Feeling that was extremely pleasant. But then the song “this is what rock n’ roll looks like” came to mind, specially the phrase ‘you wanna talk the talk, you better show me ya walk’, and this harsher exterior engulfed your core. This kind of energy configurations I often see on people who try to show people they’re strong and have a hard time making themselves vulnerable to other people, but in reality they’re quite squishy inside.

A thing that struck me as odd were those thingies floating around you. Imagine they leave a trail, and make a beeping sound. And they seem to be keeping tabs on you. They could have been left there by someone watching over you with good intentions but I don’t know that. But they do feel artificial, so I think someone did fabricate them, whether it was a human or not.

I’ll be waiting for your feedback. Please remember I’m a n00b and doing this for practise.~

So the first part is very accurate, I’m naturally soft, sensitive and emotional. But I do tend to project a rougher, strong, easy going exterior, and I do have a difficult time being vulnerable with people.

The second part is something new and I have a feeling those things may be related to my spirit guides (although I’m not quite sure myself, I haven’t developed my abilities enough to discern it)

Welcome to the POC Spell Book online form! Here you will submit your spell as well as information regarding yourself and your witchcraft! The book will be an free, online PDF for all readers. However, in the future, I hope to sell is so that the witches of color who submitted spells will be able to profit from it. This will be the first volume! Must be 18 and older in order to submit a spell!

You’re guarded, in general and specifically. Protecting yourself from something happening in your life that’s causing stress or more worry than you think you can handle? Sort of like carry a lot in your arms and you’re afraid that your arms will give out soon. I don’t think they will. The reason I say that is because you have this…rich and deep strength in you. 

That strength is sort of….I see amber stone. Amber stone with the sun shinning through it. Whatever it is you’re facing or struggling with, you’ll find the means and ways to get through it. You’ll find it in others and yourself on those dark and scary nights. 

There’s a beating, almost throbbing wound that’s healing inside you. It still hurts, but not as much as it did? But healing means you’re growing and moving forward. Despite the walls you have up, I don’t feel deep stagnation or blocks, which is good. 

In terms of visual representations of your energy: Amber stone, like I said. Warm, wonderful sunlight. Sunrises - a beginning, rebirth? Deep green woods, full of life beneath a thick fog. The smell of fog as well, or sea mist. Clean and pure, but with a bite of frost or the hint of salt on the air.

I’m talking about the people who do not follow the religion to which the deity they “work with” is from. I’m talking about the people who say shit like “Aphrodite is good for love spells” or “Ares is good for curses” and don’t see Gods/Goddesses as the powerful beings that they are and instead use them as spell ingredients.

I would say "work with [deity's name]" if I incorporate deities into my practice in the future. Even speaking as a Chinese person who participated in Chinese folk religion, I don't feel comfortable referring to my relationship to our deities as "worshiping". We only ever call on them for our own use, otherwise we don’t have much of a relationship with them. Most religions do worship their deities, and of course there are many Chinese people who do worship our deities. But not everyone can invest in worship of deities for one reason or another. I personally think deities couldn't care less how we interact with them. Some of us will worship them, some of us will only call on them if we want something from them. I am only speaking from the experience of having grown up with Chinese folk religion. I personally believe people don't have to worship deities (except those from closed cultures, those are off-limits), and can only call on them for help. Just adding my two cents here, as this doesn’t necessarily apply to all pantheons.

Little PSA from Scandinavia (I’m Danish): vikings never had dreads either. They had braids and other styles, but never dreads. The vikings were, by the past standards, obsessed with cleanliness and bathing. Most washed daily and you can not get dreads, as a white Scandinavian, if you clean your hair daily or even weekly.
