On the day he was born, God cried “Let there be light entertainment.” And there was. A pan-global phenomenon, Rik Mayall departed us six years ago today in search of the next adventure and has been sorely missed by millions since. Most comics are lucky if they have one hit that people know them for; Rik was loved across generations for the multitude of characters he created and lived in. Some grew up enthralled by George’s Marvellous Medicine, some quoting his writing and performance in The Young Ones the next day in school. He skewered Thatcher in the 80s and somehow made a Tory politician charming and sexy. He was buccaneering as Flashheart and combined tragically funny loneliness with cartoon violence as Richie in Bottom. He was the perfect imaginary friend and a Bad News rock god. He wrote books and had hit singles. He toured sell-out theatre shows and made even adverts mini-masterpieces with his comedic performances. He was a dedicated husband, father and friend. He was a multi-talented legend of British comedy and we are all better for having known him. He was, is, and shall ever be; The Man, The Myth, The Legend: Dr Rik Mayall.
