A Grand Opening raffle skeb prize for anonymous of Three from The Murderbot Diaries
Went with a scene from Network Effect chapter 17 so !!spoiler warning!!
what murderbot isn't
thinking about how when we get three's perspective in network effect its writing is so barebones, very standard report sounding even about its own feelings. and then we see murderbot's perspective and its like OH. you like to tell stories the way shows do. you like to paint a picture and build and craft and add flourishes!
i just feel like i forgot for a while that murderbot didn't have to be telling us its story the way it does, and the comparison with three's narration made that extremely clear
Tlacey and her ComfortUnit. Inspired by an full cast audio edition.
self-described murderbot who does everything in its power to save and protect humans, especially those its chosen as family. academic research transport bot who wants to kill people so so bad please please please let it off leash just once just one time please. bonded pair do not seperate
i liked that mb got to preserve its deus ex machina role in platform decay despite the fact mensah's family was pretty much expecting it to show up and rescue them...you know who wasn't expecting that, though? the militia. from the militia's perspective, a rando with the exact skillset and knowledge they needed appeared out of nowhere on the cusp of a firefight and volunteered its services, nonchalantly pulled one of them out of the line of fire in the nick of time, asked politely for a weapon and exploded an enemy's gun basically instantaneously, and then peaced out and they never saw it again. i think they had an even more quintessential deus ex machina experience than the ravihyral polycule.
always thinking about the Home short story 🥲
(sneak peek from a recent batch of sketches on patreon)
Three, with the air of a child who knows it's in big trouble with one parent immediately trying to get the other parent on its side: it can't be a we problem? 🥺
i haven't done block printing in like 10 years shhh
Me watching tv: it’s what murderbot would have wanted
Me half-assing my job: it's what murderbot would have wanted
Me cancelling on social events: it's what murderbot would have wanted
Me rigorously following health and safety rules: it's what murderbot would have wanted
Me harassing friends about their own self care while neglecting my own: it's not what murderbot would have wanted but boy howdy it's what murderbot would do
the murderbot diaries r like. come closer i am a normal series abt a funney robot. and then it hits u with a traumatized emotionally closed off character experiencing being cared for and loved for the first time and not knowing what to do with it
the mincing murderbot
My murderbot hyperfixation demands I make some fanart soooo here we go. As soon as I read this scene in Network Effect I had to draw it for obvious reasons 💎 ✨
spoilers for the murderbot diaries network effect but i don't think im ever going to get over this one bc what if you spent every moment of your existence knowing you were statistically going to die in a self sacrificial way except it wouldnt be by choice. and then you free yourself from that system except you never even thought about placing value on your own life so you continue being sure that one day you'll die for someone elses sake except now you get to choose who. and so you keep going on these self appointed extremely dangerous missions with a passively suicidal belief that it should end successfully even if you have to die for that outcome bc thats what you were built for and its fine bc hey at least you chose to go out in a heroic blaze of glory! (and nevermind the fact that two books ago a bot did actually go out willfully protecting humans and died a hero and it wasn't you, and it kinda mega fucked you up but you refuse to process that)
and then you finally run into a scenario that is so serindipitously fucked that you have to make a copy of yourself to go die heroically. and everyone hates this plan, which you find stupid and frustrating, because they want to stop you from doing the thing you were MADE to do, the ending you've KNOWN ABOUT and CHOSEN NOT TO AVOID, the heroic sacrifice you had always planned for yourself and clearly your copy (as a copy of you) feels the same way.
but then you're not the self sacrificing hero. your copy is. You're the one behind the trigger. in the position of the humans, the ones who get to live as a result. and suddenly you have to stare your desire for self sacrifice in the face and realize that you don't want to kill yourself. that, being able to see yourself from the outside, you have to assign your own life some value because if you didn't you wouldn't hesitate to kill your copy. and if you dont want to give it the hero's ending it's INSISTING on, if it feels like it's not okay-- well shit maybe it wasn't okay every time you did the very same thing. maybe you never should have been fine with it. but youre realizing that maybe you don't want to die in self sacrifice in the same moment you have to enable that very thing for a version of yourself, and time is running out, and this is what you both had always planned for. you go through with it.
So a version of you gets the heroic ending it always expected. but it wasn't you. and you have to live with that.
You have to live.
Free will means I can draw my favorite sci-fi duos interacting.
thinking about Eva Stratt, thinking about how she wanted to be tested for the coma gene first, how she pushed forward her ideas and plan mercilessly, how she would have been the first one to step onto the Hail Mary and get strapped in but she couldn’t because she didn’t major in science or business or communication or anything more involved. She was a history major that strode forwards while still facing the past. And she could never have been the one to save earth, no matter how badly she wanted to. She would never be the sacrifice, the hero, or the savior. She could give all of it up for humanity and it would still never love her back . Idk I think she’s cool
