A lot of people missed this question on my story so I thought I would post a case and diagram explaining the answer. Calcium channel blocker associated peripheral edema occurs due to increased hydrostatic pressure caused by preferential dilation of the pre-capillary vasculature. Drugs that work on RAAS (ACEi & ARBs) dilate the post-capillary vessels allowing for normalization of hydrostatic pressure. Often patients on CCBs will develop peripheral edema that is not responsive to diuretics but will respond to an ACEi or ARB.
