fun facts!
leonardo da vinci was a year younger than christopher columbus.
stalin, freud, Ttto, trotsky and hitler walk into a bar……no really, it’s possible since they all lived in vienna in 1913.
aristotle tutored alexander the great.
abraham lincoln was twelve when napoleon bonaparte died.
an unusually well-traveled person in 5th century BC could have conceivably met confucius, lao tze, the buddha and socrates over the course of a seventy year life.
pharaohs and mammoths existed at the same time.
pocahontas and william shakespeare died, in the same country, less than a year apart from each other.
oxford university is older than the aztec empire.
Stuff like this really makes me wish we learned history chronologically instead of geographically. You know how cool this shit is? So much can happen all at once and we keep pretending like it doesn’t
Brock is one of the few and perfect examples of an actual gentlemen like yeah he’d hit on literally every girl he’d meet but would also only shower them with affection and compliments. He never falls into the tired “token pervert/borderline sexual assaulter” anime trope and despite being hella flirty, treats the women he’s interested with nothing but respect and compassion.
Truly the only straight anime boy ill ever stan
Also when in Sinnoh, there was a young maid who was interested in Brock and did a lot of things to get his attention but since she wasn’t old enough he didn’t even consider trying to flirt with her!!!
Remember that one movie where Brock busted out the most genuinely wholesome one-liner of all time?
He also never blew a gasket and spewed insults like a manchild or tried to guilt trip women when a woman rejected him. He took the rejction well and moved on with his life .🐸☕ Incels take note.
If you dont love Brock you’re wRONG
people with bad taste are always like “yurr hurr The Beach is about zuko and mai and how they’re a great couple” while intellectuals know that Actually The Beach is about mining any and all of the untapped friendship potential of this striking exchange
One of the best twist moments in Avatar is when Ty Lee suddenly and dramatically turns against Azula at the Boiling Rock. Azula was completely convinced that Ty Lee would obey her without question forever, but Azula wasn’t the only one fooled. Mai is just as shocked when Ty Lee rebels as Azula is. Ty Lee’s survival instincts were so sharp that she never let anyone know what she was thinking, not Azula, not Mai, and certainly not Zuko.
Zuko really believed that Ty Lee didn’t understand who he was at all. He completely bought into the act that she’s just a puppet for Azula, who lives in her “little Ty Lee world where everything’s great all the time”. But the thing is, Ty Lee is one of the most perceptive characters in the show, and she’s excellent at keeping that on the down low, but she sees a lot more of Zuko than he thinks, and a lot of what she sees is very familiar to her.
Overshadowed by prodigious siblings?
Wanting to be acknowledged for the talents you have rather than the talents you don’t?
Kept in line by fear?
Spending your whole life bending over backwards to fit the persona the royal family has set for you?
So yeah Zuko. She knows you.
This characterization is definitely emphasized with Ty Lee’s acrobatics, flexibility, and ability to hit pressure points. There’s a level of subtlety and precision that is required for such skills. She had to know her own body to be able to bend it in such ways, and she has to know other people’s bodies to be able to disable them.
And pretty much from the moment you meet her, it’s fairly clear that there’s more to her than her lighthearted, bubbleheaded persona, long before she uses her battle skills. Look at what happens when Azula recruits her.
Azula used blatant intimidation tactics to get Ty Lee to comply, ordering the net to be set on fire and all the animals released (which, for the record, would not only have endangered Ty Lee but the circus creatures themselves–I bet Ty Lee was attached to them, and that would’ve been a double threat in itself). Ty Lee is visibly terrified, but instead of calling her out or letting Azula see that she was intimidated, she says this:
Instead of endangering herself by pointing out that Azula crossed a line, Ty Lee falls back on her talk of “the universe” and “auras,” talk that canonically gets her indulged or dismissed but never taken seriously.
She knows that Azula’s dangerous. There’s no way she doesn’t know that Azula is threatening her. But if she can keep Azula from realizing she knows that, she’s a little safer.
Because she’s one of maybe two people Azula never considered as potential enemies–even (especially, but that’s another thread) Ozai is a threat in her mind, but Mai and Ty Lee are the closest thing Azula has to trusted friends, right up until their betrayal.
Ty Lee’s spent a lifetime cultivating a personality that not only allows her to stands out among her siblings–it protects her from being treated as a threat. When you’re friends with Azula, that is an essential facade to maintain. and she does it consistently enough that no one ever sees through it.
All of the Fire Nation kids are so messed up. Zuko’s just the one who gets in the most trouble, because he’s the only one who doesn’t have a mask.

The Last of Us Part II
Look, I don’t like Trump either, but do you guys realise how harmful spreading something like this could be for Finland? Sanna Marin did not say this, nor would she ever say something like this in relation to a foreign head of state.
The original joke was made by Have I Got News For You a week earlier:
This. We are a country that Sweden and Russia fought over for a very long time, a country that was ruled once by Russia, a country that fought a war against the Soviet Union and humiliated them despite losing the said war and losing a big chunk of our territory, a country that had a very delicate relationship with the Soviet Union, and still has a fairly delicate relatioship with Russia, our only potential military threat.
And then you have a president like Trump in the US who believes anything he sees on the internet so long as it fits his narrative, and is not known for fact checking or thinking before tweeting or sometimes genuinely acting on things and causing international conflicts.
Finland will be fine, but please do not involve us or any other nation in your war of information.
Adding another set of good tags:
Also yes, do reblog this. The fake news tweet went viral enough for the Press Counselor of Embassy of Finland in Washington D.C. to state on Twitter that this quote from our PM isn’t real.
This is about Joe fucking Biden I'm losing my mind
Canceled for war crimes again :/
Black people do not have to be exceptional for their right to life!!!!
Repeat after me:
Black people do not have to be exceptional for their right to life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This hardly has any notes but can I just say that non black people and white people you can in fact reblog this, thanks x
I’d encourage non black people and white people to reblog this so we at least know ya’ll understand and that we’re on the same page.Thanks.
I keep seeing actresses or models who are trying to get the role of Katara and are trying to catch the attention of casting directors for Netflix despite the fact that they're not Native or dark skinned, let alone Inuit/Inupiat/Yupik Native
On one Tiktok where somebody actually points out how this actress shouldnt audition for Katara because she's not Inuk and the Water tribe definitely is, some weirdo is like "how do you know they're inuit -_-" like UHHHH??
Probably all the imagery that's nearly exactly copied from Northern Indigenous (namely Inuit) culture(s)??? And that's not even getting into the written dialogue & world building that mimics Northern Indigenous culture like Sokka mentioning eating seal blubber, the near genocide of the Southern water tribe, the landscape etc etc literally the ONLY thing that's asian about Sokka and Katara are their names and KIND OF the clothes they wear
Okay, so I just got shampoo in my eye (luckily my blind eye; it could have been a lot worse) and as I was grabbing said part of my face in complete agony, it hit me…that’s exactly how Zuko got his scar. Not the ‘shampoo’ bit, the ‘grabbing the face’ bit. Ozai put his hand to Zuko’s face is what I’m getting at.
I guess part of me always knew that, because his scar does look a lot like a handprint:
But still, whenever I thought about the agni kai, I’d imagine Ozai standing over his thirteen-year-old son and firing haphazardly like:
But no, I think he brings his hand right up to Zuko’s face.
Which would explain, you know, this:
At first, I thought that he backhanded Zuko, like Azula does here.
But when I looked up these photos, it hit me (no pun intended) that we’ve probably seen the exact move that Ozai made:
Just at a different angle, because I imagine that he was standing over Zuko, due to the whole symbolism of height differences.
Still, I think he slowly brought his fire-encased hand up to Zuko’s face and held it there, burning him, just like he was about to do with Aang. The difference being that Aang is able to deflect the attack:
Which he was able to do, because he learned from Zuko.
I swear this show has more circles than a cheese grater…
I learned in a Latin Studies class (with a chill white dude professor) that when the Europeans first saw Aztec cities they were stunned by the grid. The Aztecs had city planning and that there was no rational lay out to European cities at the time. No organization.
When the Spanish first arrived in Tenochtitlan (now downtown mexico city) they thought they were dreaming. They had arrived from incredibly unsanitary medieval Europe to a city five times the size of that century’s london with a working sewage system, artificial “floating gardens” (chinampas), a grid system, and aqueducts providing fresh water. Which wasn’t even for drinking! Water from the aqueducts was used for washing and bathing- they preferred using nearby mountain springs for drinking. Hygiene was a huge part if their culture, most people bathed twice a day while the king bathed at least four times a day. Located on an island in the middle of a lake, they used advanced causeways to allow access to the mainland that could be cut off to let canoes through or to defend the city. The Spanish saw their buildings and towers and thought they were rising out of the water. The city was one of the most advanced societies at the time.
Anyone who thinks that Native Americans were the savages instead of the filthy, disease ridden colonizers who appeared on their land is a damn fool.
They’ve also recently discovered a lost Native American city in Kansas called Etzanoa It rivals the size of Cahokia, which was very large as well.
here are some reconstructions of Tenochtitlan
just a note, we don’t think of old european cities as ruins, because those civilizations continued and kept building over the old–there are no abandoned ruins for us to visit & photograph. when we picture those old cities, we have only mental images drawn from our own assumptions & prejudices–images that tend to glorify ‘civilized’ europe.
since victors write history, our image of native american cities was created by colonizers motivated to uphold the ‘native savage’ myth. when we think of these civilizations now, we think of ‘uncivilized’ (rough, broken, abandoned) ruins, because that’s what remains. ruins are the only thing left. because of the destruction wrought by western invaders, these civilizations never had a chance to continue building. they were destroyed, and all we have left is an unimaginative shadow of their former glory.
went to peru and visited some of their museums and learned inca history that american schools don’t teach you. basically you know why they were beaten out by the spanish invaders? because incas were mostly scientists and not warriors. they had advanced medicine, farming and science technology. THATS what they were good at - tech - not building weapons to most efficiently kill people. the spanish were good at that. so they won. basically the real savages and thugs won and murdered a bunch of scientists, and their technology and advancements are lost forever. it took into the 20th century for colonizer technology to advance in the field of medicine and agriculture to the level of the incas. colonizers literally set human knowledge back like 500 years.
In some black communities there’s still a stigma that kinky or coarse hair is “bad”, which couldn’t be further from the truth. There’s no such thing as good or bad when describing someone’s natural hair texture or type. To those struggling to love and accept their natural hair because of societal pressures, remember this - straight, curly, kinky or wavy, it doesn’t make a difference. Embrace your hair the way it is, no matter what society tells you. All hair is good hair. It’s your Crown.
