One of the strange things about writing a character theme is that it has to be composed in the early stages before much is known about the character. It can be a daunting task, especially when it’s for a main character, because everyone is going to hear a lot of it. Korra’s theme, however, came very easily. This was probably due to my history with the project, TLK being a spin-off of Avatar: The Last Airbender. I felt I had known Korra because of the rich mythology from which she evolved - and also due to the fact that Korra was such an immediately strong, rich and believable character. In short, she inspired me right away.

Sweet and fragile at times, explosive and violent at others, Korra’s personality required a theme with a range of color, sound and dynamics as expansive as her character.

My initial idea was to take Aang’s theme as a seed - to have him musically reincarnated, if you will - and create something more mature, complex, and passionate. (If you listen carefully, you may be able to hear remnants of Aang’s theme in the melody.) In contrast to Aang’s theme, which is basically a three-note melody played on a cello or zhonghu (a bowed Chinese instrument, similar to an erhu but a perfect 5th lower in pitch) over the range of an octave and a 4th. It’s strange to say, but I feel like Korra demanded a bold theme. You have to admit, she has a way of asserting herself from the get-go.

Been rewatching Avatar and still have so much love for these characters. I enjoy thinking of Iroh meeting Zuko’s dragon, sometime after The Search. It would be a nice way of bringing the symbolism of the dragons in their story come full circle.

One of the most beautiful things about the Legend of Korra is definitely the fact that even the villains change and evolve over time. They grow and mature just like all the other wonderful characters on the show, and that’s spectacular.

Anyone else notice this? :) I thought it was super sweet!  In the last episode of ATLA, aang wore this beautiful airbender necklace at the end of Legend of korra, Korra wears the same necklace but only water tribe themed :) So subtle but so awesome :D
