The cold wind howled outside the windows of Red Headquarters, a reminder to all inside that winter had not quite released her icy grip. Even so, the chill of his lonely heart ached for more frigidly than that of the darkest winter night. A long day of fulfilling his duties, Lancelot knew a night of good rest was exactly what needed, but it was unlikely he would get it on this windy night.
He’d returned to his chambers at a quarter till, having only the strength to change into his sleeping attire before finding himself pulled toward the window. The clock struck midnight and rung it’s droning chimes. A solemn expression crossed his features as the moonlight illuminated a small flurry being tossed about the relentless air.
“Lance-” A shy voice called from the darkened room behind him.
His hand fell to his side where normally the hilt of his sword resided, only grabbing air. The icy glare reflecting in blue eyes melted away as the King recognized and processed the other man in his bedroom. “Harr?”
A sliver of silver light illuminated the rose blush creeping across the magician’s cheeks. “I… couldn’t find the right time to– and then– I–” Harr stumbled over his words, the red spreading up to the tips of his ears. Announcing himself much too late had set up an awkward situation, yet he should have done so.
“You could have been caught. What caused you to sneak into my chambers at this hour?” Empty words, spoken out of habit as the King. His steps long and purposeful, Lancelot crossed over to the bed to where the young wizard sat half covered by the duvet.
“I telepor-” An error went through his mind, effectively cutting off his ability to form words as a tender kiss was placed against his lips by his beloved. The risk clear, as his position within cradle the lowest as an outlaw and Lancelot the revered King of Hearts.
A soft chuckle fell from Lancelot’s lips, their breath mingling. “You could have spoken up sooner. I do not bite.” He deepened their connection, crawling forward onto the bed. The feeling of his lover’s lips against his own gave far more warmth to his soul that any roaring fireplace ever could.
The bedroom filled with only their panting as the pair broke apart when their lungs couldn’t go without air any longer. Harr shifted and lifted the covers to allow his partner under. He curled into Lancelot’s side with a sigh of contentment. “What were you looking so longingly for out the window?”
“You,” Lancelot answered, pressing a chaste kiss to his forehead, stroking his fingers through Harr’s soft locks. “I sleep better if you are around. I was selfishly wishing you to be here.” Winter nights were long, and Harr’s visits were few and far between. Should he be caught here, Cradle could be thrown into chaos.
“I’m glad to be here.” Harr buried his face into Lancelot’s chest out of embarrassment, a groan passing his lips as he remembered silently watching the King change out of his uniform into the silken sleepwear. “Fifteen minutes, I waited to speak, I’m ashamed-”
Lancelot chuckled at the red spreading deepening on the tips of Harr’s ears once again. How easily he fell into this state. “I would not have you any other way.” He’d known the wizard for many years, and nothing brought him more happiness than holding him close to his heart. On this cold winter’s night, he could indulge himself in having his lover within his arms and fall into a blissful sleep that both wished could last long past these late hours.
