Leaning back against the wall he ignored the stylist talk about a million things. He honestly sure if it was supposed to be for him or if they were talking to themselves at this point. Letting out a huff he grinned when someone walked up to stand next to him. “Can you believe these people? Honestly I think she’s been talking for an hour.”

“Come on, I’m not that young. I’m much closer to eighteen than I am twelve.” She told him him with a smile and a casual shrug of her shoulders. Sixteen was more than old enough in her book. “Keep your luck, you might need it for yourself.” Though at his next remark she couldn’t help but cocking an eyebrow in his direction. “I’ll ask you after the parade how is that? Though for my sake pray they don’t just roll me in body glitter and call me the ocean or something.”
“Twelve is quite a step but if that’s the age you want to go with.” he shrugged at her. At her comment he couldn’t stop himself from snorting. “Of course. You plan on beating me. Sometimes I forget that everyone here are enemies.” It was boring. People didn’t want to make friends here but it didn’t sound fun to spend your last days with no friends. “Oh I wouldn’t worry. Glitter is usually a District 1 thing.”

Ever since arriving in the Capitol, Electra could not get her daughter out of her mind. It wasn’t even fear that she would die that preoccupied the redhead, it was fear that her daughter would grow up without a mother. In Electra’s mind, that was a fate worse than death. She couldn’t sleep and sat perched looking out the window with her delicate fingers playing with the locket around her neck. Lights twinkled on the other side of the glass and Electra could appreciate the beauty of the sight. She could so easily hear Juliana’s tiny voice asking about the lights or reaching for them as they sparkled throughout the night. That was why she needed to fight. Strength was what she needed now, not weakness. With a finger, Electra wiped the beginnings of tears from her eyes and turned quickly at the sound of approaching footsteps. “Who’s there?” It was late and she had thought she was alone. Who else could possibly be there?
Everything seemed to be moving too fast and too slow at the same time. Harlequin didn’t know what he was supposed to do with his time. Sure he knew the basics, ‘wait for training make people happy’ but it was all lost in his head during these moments when he was alone. Walking around the building was boring but it was giving him something to do. At a figure he stopped for a moment before noticing she was crying. A tribute then. “Harlequin Tiberius.” He smiled at her, forced one actually, he didn’t know what to do with crying people. “You okay?” He offered.

“It breaks everyone,” Aspen replied. “It just all depends on how much and how those cracks form.” There was something in the water in the Career districts and this boy had definitely had a few too many sips of it. “Have you ever killed someone before? You aren’t going to know how that’s going to impact you until you feel the life go out of someone and know you’re responsible for it.”
“Well then we’ll find out soon how I take to it then.” He wasn’t going to argue with her about it. If she wanted to insist it would break people then so be it. “I’m not a murderer, I’d only kill for the games. Just like you did.”

Faer walked off the train, dragging his feet he wasn’t looking forward to any part of this. In fact, he was trying to talk his brain into agreeing to just sprint away and let the guards kill him. But he couldn’t, he just couldn’t. If there was any chance that he’d make it through the games – not leave his parents with another dead son, he’d have to try his best. He was so lost in his thoughts, he didn’t even realize all of the things around him until he noticed everyone else looking up and staring at the buildings, he glanced around before quickly looking back down without a real care.
Shoving his hands in his pocket Harlequin listened to everyone whisper to their district mates or really say nothing but stare. The girl from his district had vanished on him again so Harlequin was alone to observe people. Everyone seemed interested in the buildings and everything other than one boy. He was in the last car so probably district 12 but he wasn’t sure how that all worked out. When he looked back down again Harlequin walked over to him, “Not too interested in the fancy buildings? I mean they are fun for like... two seconds but they are just buildings.” he grinned. “Unless you’re all about architecture I suppose.”

Stone-breaking did seem more impressive under these circumstances and Roxie gave him a strained little smile. His muscles were big and thinking of it in context of the arena they’d be in pretty soon, she felt a flash of terror. Would he be this charming when he was trying to kill her? Certainly not. “I didn’t know people switched Districts at all. But I suppose if you can’t remember anything it doesn’t really matter, anyway.” She paused a moment, letting her words hang on the tip of her tongue before coming out with it: “Is it really…I mean, does everyone in your District want to be a tribute? Doesn’t anyone see it for what it really is?”
“I don’t think it’s allowed. I mean if it is sign me up for Capitol life!” Harlequin thought for a moment on the story his father would well him before smiling at Roxie. “But it was more of a forbidden love story. My mother was a mentor for 1 and my father a mentor from 2. They fell in love I guess and she got pregnant with me. During one of the games they were here in the Capitol, got to see each other. And she gave birth and didn’t make it. I was born in the Capitol during the games. But I wasn’t a Capitol child. I was a child of District 2.” He was sure his father made it seem more romantic than he did.

“And when’s the last time I career district won? Oh right, like five years ago.” Aspen rolled her eyes then and shrugged. “Go ahead and enjoy yourself.” However, his response made her blood boil. She absolutely hated that mindset. It was disgusting and vile. “Killing people does not bring glory,” she snapped. “Think that all you want but you’re a fool to believe it. All killing does is leave a hole in your heart and blood on your hands that will never go away no matter how many times you wash them. It breaks you.” She only killed two in her arena, but it was two too many.
“Oh I know that. And the career districts know that too. So we’ve been pushed harder because of it. But hey maybe you’ll get lucky and I’ll die soon.” He didn’t mind talking about his death. It was going to happen, of course it wasn’t going to happen now, he spent his whole life training for these games. It was in his blood to win them. But he wouldn’t voice that out loud. “My father isn’t broken and he was a winner. Just because it breaks some doesn't mean it breaks everyone. Just a fact.”

His comment should have probably offended her but Kendall couldn’t help but laugh softly. “Oh come on, only half the little kids are taller than me.” She joked. “Besides don’t you know all the best things come in small packages.” Her size wouldn’t help her in a physical confrontation but she had worked hard on developing a skill set that made the most of what she did have. “Are you including yourself in that all or…?” Two could play this little game of his.
“I meant young but sure. We can talk about your height too.” He could agree with her if she wanted him too. “Right doesn’t happen very often though when you really think about it. But I do wish you all the luck in the world.” Putting his hand over his heart he let out a laugh. “Me? Oh well I don’t know honestly. We’d have to see what they put you in before I can agree to that.”

She was right. It was just a matter of figuring out if he was from One or Two. Aspen shook her head and sighed when he spoke. “You’re also more than likely going to die in the very near future along with twenty two other teenagers,” she pointed out. “I don’t know what they’ve got you smoking in the Career districts to think this is something to be happy about.”
“But not as likely as most of the others.” he shrugged at her, a smirk playing on his lips. “Plus if this is my last few days alive I’m going to live it up as much as I can right? I don’t see the problem in enjoying myself right now. Why make your last days terrible?” At her question Harlequin let out a huff, “See I don’t know why you act like we’re so wrong in training. It brings glory. Your districts could spend time training too.”

Roxie flushed again when she felt the boy’s breath on her ear, swallowing hard and hoping he wouldn’t notice. She was really doing a bad job of appearing stoic and unaffected, she reflected. His teasing was more than likely just show, but Roxie was too overwhelmed and desperate for friends right now to care. She decided she would go along with it, but stay on her guard. “I won’t tell,” she said, giving him a smile that lifted only one corner of her mouth. “Sorry, my name’s Roxie. District Seven.” She lifted an arm and pretended to make a muscle. “Lumberjacks, and all that,” she joked. His story made her raise her eyebrows and she made a little hm sound of interest in her throat. “Sorry about your mom. That must have been hard, having to change Districts. I guess losing the lap of luxury wasn’t easy.”
It was enjoyable seeing the look on her face, she was trying to look tough but it was hard here he imagined. If you didn’t train for this an expect it he couldn’t imagine how that would feel. Probably bad he assumed. “Good deal then.” Harlequin grinned at that. When she told him her district he let out a laugh before lifting his own arm and flexing, “Stone breaking. “ Letting his arm fall he shook his head, “No. Don’t worry about it. She died before I was born so I never saw district 1. I’ve been in district 2 my whole life.”

02. Harlequin’s name had been a subject of teasing for many years when he was younger. But he takes pride in being named for his District 1 mother that died in child birth.
01. Harlequin has had a strange relationship with his father because of his step mother. She’s never been very nice to Harlequin and his father has never stood up for him against her. It took their once close relationship and made it harder. Harlequin has no idea that his father was forced to marry his step mother by the Capitol.

Roxie wondered whether Harlequin had meant everyone else was terrified, or if he’d just unwittingly admitted to being so himself. In any case, it made her feel just the slightest bit better; better enough, at least, to let out a real–if not enthusiastic–laugh in response to his assertion. “It’s hard to be very manly when you come from a District based entirely on luxury, I guess.” She hesitantly decided that she liked Harlequin despite his creepy good humor about the situation. “Nice to meet you,” she said, nodding and offering him a small but genuine smile. A career, as she’d guessed. Looking away from him again, she sighed. “Guess this is what you’ve been waiting your whole life for, huh?”
“Exactly.” he grinned before leaning into her ear, “But don’t tell them I said that. I’m supposed to be on their team as I’m sure you know. Don’t want them to off me first you know?” If he was really worried about it he wouldn’t tell her that, but it would be interesting to see if she was actually at least a little trustworthy. Why not make friends before they died. “Wonderful yes but you didn’t tell me your name. And I can never tell with the normal outfits the other districts wear.” At her question he nodded, “Yes. Both of my parents were winners so I’m a legacy, my mother from district 1 but she died and I was sent with my dad to 2. I guess that’s a good thing considering I just made a snide comment about 1 right?”

Her eyelids drooped slightly in a studious manner, her head tilting a bit to one side as she – again – eyed him while he spoke, her naturally stoic features taking on a more curious, amused expression. Although she appreciated his light demeanour, Aerika couldn’t help but wonder if this was real or merely for show. However, the puzzle was finally pieced together in her mind when he introduced himself. “Ah-ha! So the truth finally comes out – you’re a career tribute.” Holding out her hand (the one she’d previously smacked him with out of pure reflex), her smile grew slightly. “Harlequin Tiberius, my name’s Aerika Lindell.”
Harlequin paid no mind to the woman’s looks over him. He knew who she was, he’d been a dedicated watcher of the games for years. “I am indeed. Was it that hard to figure out? Most people have already got their angry faces on at me when I pass. Like it’s my fault I was raised to do this.” She might have felt the same, he didn’t care though. Looking at her hand his grin widened and he took her hand. “I know who you are. I can probably name every mentor here actually.”

“Honestly, you have got to try some of this– honestly, you should just try everything. You can never go hungry in this place; there’s always more waiting. Better not to think too hard and just enjoy it. Just stay away from that purple shit– trust me, you’ll regret drinking that.”
“I never think to hard, I think you scolded me for that earlier if I remember right. But why not try the purple stuff? What does it do?”

When she was touched, Aspen immediately tensed and turned to face the person that touched her. She hadn’t watched the reapings, but she’d seen enough careers to spot one. “You certainly seem happy.”
“I’m in the capital, I’m living in the lap of luxury and competing in the games I’ve trained my entire life for! What’s not to be happy about?” He wasn’t sure why everyone was so unhappy. That’s what everyone was supposed to be doing, enjoying themselves.
