surely, patrick didn’t have a bone to pick with harper at first, cause she was just a little bit annoying. but now, there was actually an excuse for his less than positive behavior with her. and when he got that text from her, he was quite ready to pick that bone. in fact, instead of texting, he picked up the phone and dialed her. made a large sigh when she answered. “hey harper…” he started saying flatly, before his tone turned slightly more angry. “coffee sounds great. maybe then you can explain to me why my mom is asking about the spunky red head that’s friending her on facebook…”

harper had never thought patrick to be the ‘calling out of the blue’ type, but she answered the call anyway, “are you a reject in person kind of guy, cause...” his voice was flat, and then angry. his mom? she didn’t even know his mom’s name, or have a facebook she went on. she mostly used instagram, and it was mostly for art but... “oh my god, i cannot believe... i would be happy to give you an explanation. meet me at...” she gave the location and hung up the phone before he could respond. she pulled on some bike shorts and a crop top before briefly checking her appearance in the mirror and threw on a few layers of mascara before she walked out of her room, her eyes on heather as she walked out of her room at the same time, gabe following her with the lovesick look on his face.  “first you’re gonna keep me up all night, then you’re gonna stalk patrick’s mom? you’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” seeing heather’s wallet sitting on the counter top, harper smirked before grabbing it and jogging to the door. “the least you can do is buy me coffee for embarrassing me with a classmate.” quickly slipping on some vans (whose they were, she wasn’t surer. itt was a total guess, honestly), harper grabbed her purse and keys and ran out the door, clicking the lock right before it closed and running down the stairs, and her jog didn’t slow until she was almost to the coffee house. harper chose to stand outside since she didn’t see patrick inside yet and wait. hopefully he would listen to her explanation, but they hardly knew each other - she would be surprised if he even showed up, honestly. and if he didn’t, then it called a sister-funded shopping spree.

harper lay in bed, her eyes staring up at the ceiling as she heard her sister’s door open and her footsteps resonate in the kitchen before she squealed and went back to her bedroom, the door closing, again. harper had found that, while she was glad heather and gabe were finally together, the sleepless weekend nights were not what she was expecting. after last weekend, she thought she would’ve heard from patrick a little more, but other than the conversation they had had in art, it had been radio silent.  harper didn’t want to seem desperate, but all of her siblings suddenly had boyfriends and weekend plans and harper was here, all alone.

pulling out her phone, harper pulled up patrick’s name and started a message, calculating her text. she didn’t want to seem overly excited to talk to him, but she also wanted to get out of her apartment. she didn’t need to hear the slamming of the bed into the wall or their giggling.  at this point, harper would actually be okay with him teasing her of being needy or whatever if it meant she could leave. 

if i offered coffee, would you save me?

vague, but to the point. and hopefully he wouldn’t ask too many questions that would keep her stuck in the apartment.

“well, you shouldn’t be embarassed.” patrick said confidently, as he swung his bag over his shoulder. he’s pretty sure it was all his inner concious and the alcohol in his system. “i’m the best at keeping secrets.” he lied. he in fact sometimes he could say stuff without thinking, but he wouldn’t let harper know that, he said it more to be assuring than anything. “back home is the city. the big ny. born and raised. greasy street fries are the best.” he shrugged as he walked with her to the door, in the direction of wherever they were going. though he didn’t account for the breeze that made him feel the liquor rush to his face. “oh fuck.” he said, trying not to fall over hismelf, finally finding something to lean on, which happened to be harper’s shoulder. “scuse em ma’m.” he laughed, drunkenly. he hadn’t been this drunk, or been this happy in a very long time if he was honest. “juuuust for that, i’ll even pay for your french fries.” he offered, as he kept walking, still leaning on her. “so what’s it like? coming from a big family and all?”

harper rolled her eyes at patrick’s comment, most of them, really. “oh please, everyone is a little embarrassed when their naked, right? and people find the flaws... it makes paintings more interesting, but I have yet to see one that i’m not totally embarrassed by.” he was from new york. it was quite the trip, new york to florida. “i’ve always wanted to go to new york. not for the food, but that would be an added bonus. you’ll have to take me some day when we’re in love and married.” harper laughed and stuck her tongue out, knowing full well it wasn’t likely they would ever end up as a romantic anything. she’d never be opposed, especially with his face, but she doubted he’d be interested in her. feeling him lean against her, she giggled as she wrapped her arms around his waist, taking a deep breath of the cool, grease-filled air and took a step forward, feeling her body run into a table just as he offered to pay. “oh my god, I’m so...” turning to the table, harper was face to face with her twin, he was all but sitting in... gabe’s lap? “um...” clearing her throat, she got herself on her feet and pushed patrick up a little, giving a tight smile to the couple? “hi, heather. not expecting... um, big family, this is what it’s like.” turning, she smiled at patrick, “this is my twin, heather. and... best friend?” she raised an eyebrow at gabe before her eyes fell on the fries. “oh mah god, fries.  Here, sit.” harper let patrick sit before she pushed him over slightly, grabbing the basket of fries and picking one up, dropping it quickly. “oh, fresh, even better. here, try these.”  looking up at the 2 across from her, she took a bite of another fry, sucking in some air to cool it down before munching on the rest. “so you 2 look nice and coupley. finally pull the ass out of your stick? no... stick, out of your... well, you know.” leaning on her elbow, harper turned to patrick, “they’ve been best friends forever. he replaces me most of the time, i swear.” picking up another fry, she waved it in the air towards gabe and heather, “they slept together last night and heather was making this big ol’ deal about it. i always told her though, gabe would probably be a good lay...” widening her eyes, she turned to her twin, “oh, i’m so sorry. that’s so rude!” wrapping her arm around her art partner’s shoulder, she leaned against him slightly, realizing that sitting made the alcohol rush to her head faster, somehow. “this is patrick. artist in the making. i was helping him with some extraaaa credit. he did great.” she gave a big grin to patrick and bit the fry.

“yeah, i guess they’re cool.” it was hard to relate to others as a single child with parents who cared more about grades than anything else. but he was still in shock that harper actually attended these, AND was a model from time to time. but suddenly she got…weird. definitely not the way she had been throughout the day. definite mood change. “i mean i wouldn’t say no….more of a challenge i guess.” patrick winked at her, as he finished packing his stuff. “besides if you like it, keep doing it.” he shrugged as he stood up, slowly as the liquor went through his veins…but the mention of her food got him interested. “oh no one makes fries like back home….but i will accept your challenge.” he grinned drunkenly at her as he took a few “hasty” steps. “and who’s idea was it to get me drunk again? i think it must’ve been you.” he pointed at her, another grin forming on him.

harper shrugged, “i used to hate it, but it was a job. now it’s... still embarrassing, but it allows me to look at myself as art. strangely enough, i critique myself less. i don’t hold myself to standards that are unattainable.” grabbing her bag, she smiled as patrick stood up, laughing slightly. “no one knows about this though, so you’re sworn to secrecy. that’s where the alcohol comes in.” harper gave him a smile as she lead him out of the room, shutting off the lights before pulling the door closed and locking it. “where is home? if you don’t mind me asking?” she glanced at him before turning back to the door and tugging on it to make sure it was locked, then grabbing his arm and pulling him towards the back door. “like i said, the alcohol is so you forget all of this. also to help you loosen up. and look at you now, painting for extra credit. that never happens in any other college course. consider yourself lucky!” looking around, she gathered her surroundings before heading in the direction of the diner.

“oh wow, a big family.“ patrick said, tilting his head slightly, he had never had the expericence of a big family, or really any family at all. all he ever knew was him and his mom, since he can only remember small things of his dad. so he was…dare he say envious of her family. “yeah i guess. but still, you’re a good painter.” he smiled at her, taking another drink, and was awfully gleeful of the fact he got extra credit and that he knew enough of anatomy. “i sure hope so. thanks.” he chuckled as he went to pack up his things he brought, before she also brough up that she in fact also worked there. “wait…” he said. he was trying to make sure that he wasn’t hearing things from the strong buzz he was given. “you work here? as…” he said, pointing at where the nude lady once stood. patrick let out a small chuckle before crossing his arms, raising her eyebrow. “now don’t get me wrong…” she slurred, his vision growing blurry from the lack of food. “but i think you want e to come here.”

shrugging her shoulders, harper nodded, “big family. couldn’t imagine anything else now, ya know? it’s weird to think of not having everyone in my life.” she smiled at his compliment on her painting, a blush forming on her cheeks. she was sure she could blame the alcohol, but from what she learned of herself, she didn’t usually turn red with the liquid. it was rare she got those kinds of compliments, anymore. it was usually i’ve seen better or a you don’t seem to have the same passion as you once did and usually just a lot of backhanded compliments. harper gave him an enticing smile and nodded her head, walking across the platform before spinning and walking backwards. “it was a way to get by and now... sometimes you just want to feel pretty. and seeing different interpretations is intriguing.” hearing his comment, harper came out of the haze slightly and nodded her head, stepping down from the platform. “no, yeah, of course. we hardly know each other...” she chuckled awkwardly as she took his paint brushes and threw them in with the rest to soak. “i mean, if you do want more practice, i can give you a schedule. so you know when not to come...” honestly, it was silly of her to think he’d want to see her nude, anyway. that was just... she was like a tutor. there were some rules against it.  “i can call you an uber, if you’d like? or food. you said you didn’t eat before, right? there’s a diner just down the road from here. best fries, honestly.”

it seemed like the party they had been dying out after a couple of hours. in fact soon him and harper were the only ones left. his eyebrow raised when he said his twin’s name. “i’m sorry. your twin is named..heather?….heather and harper?” suddenly, he kind of burst out into a fit of chuckles. “sorry thats funny. your siblings seem….well…clingy if i’m honest. but we’ll say loyal for the faint of heart.” he said, finishing the last of his scotch glass. “hey, psych isn’t for everyone. just like painting isn’t for everyone.” he laughed, looking at his painting. and though she was complementary, he couldn’t help but look over at harpers, which was a million times better. “i mean looks like you know the female anatomy better than me.” he laughed, looking at the painting still, not even noticing the actual naked model in front of him leaving. “i mean…i feel kind of useless now. compared to you, there was no reason i should even try.” he said, hopping over to her seat as she cleaned up. “look i’m sorry for being a dick earlier. i appreciate your help. and for what it’s worth, your actually really talented.”

harper let him laugh. it wasn’t an unusual response. he’d get a kick out of finding out that it was a reese thing. their parents thought it was cute and convenient. “clingy is the perfect word. we’re all super close in age so it was bound to happen. plus, twin older sisters, twin middle sisters, plus 2 brothers scattered in the middle of it all? we had to have alliances. all of us against our parents.” 8 kids vs. 2 adults was already hard enough, but with their ‘alliances’ that they lived by, it made it that much more difficult for their parents. now that she was older, she actually felt sort of bad about it. looking between their paintings, she eyed patrick as he started to do what everyone did after painting. “hey, you can’t compare yourself to me. i’ve been doing this for... years. it’s my major, and its my job.” she took all of the brushes and shrugged her shoulders at his apology, “i pushed you out of your comfort zone. it was expected. but, for what it’s worth, you did a lot better than I thought you would.” she gave him a smile before tossing the brushes into the sink and running warm water of them before turning and leaning against the counter.  “besides, i should know the female anatomy better than you. i have it. all of it. plus when you’re up there, you learn a lot about your body you never thought you’d have to learn.” tightening the core, crossing one leg over the other in a particular way to tighten or smooth the skin, hand here and head there to make the body look longer than it was. it took a long time for harper to figure it out. turning the water off, she let the brushes soak before returning to their easels, taking in what he had done. “looks good enough for extra credit to me.” taking her pencil, harper wrote a small EC HR in the corner so their professor would know to give credit where credit was due. “If you wanna do it again, i’ll be up there tomorrow.” he was attractive, and she had a pretty nice buzz. she was shocked she wasn’t already up there without any clothes, honestly. she had, unfortunately, and to everyone’s dismay, turned out a lot more like casey than she had thought possible. including the reckless behavior with men.

“you’re not obvious, i’m just really good at what i do.” patrick laughed as he continued to paint and harper told him more about her life and family. so her personality does make sense. her bubbliness, her need to include and be included, it all fit with a middle child of a big family. and on top of it….a twin. “oh wow there’s two of you?” he chuckled looking over at her. “let’s hope she’s the sane one.” he laughed again, often what he did when he was drinking was laugh at his own jokes in case no one else did. “you’re spot on with injf. but i’m a virgo. leo moon and ascending.” he shrugged. “but you’re not too bad. astrology is gonna be a big part of my psychology plan. i think we can tell a lot about the stars, even if we don’t all believe it.” patrick looked back at the painting, it was defintiely a lot more colorful and less black as originally. “what do you think, better?” he asked, turning his painting to harper.

harper raised an eyebrow at his comment on heather being the sane one before a laugh erupted from her. “heather? the sane one. boy, you really haven’t met a reese. i don’t know how my parents survived. i think... maybe my oldest sister would be considered sane. she’s also on a date with her ex-fiance who went into rehab six years ago, so i’ll let you take that as you will.” pulling her legs up, harper crossed here leg as she finished her glass, sighing. “one our of four? that is terrible, but psych, that’s pretty cool. makes sense with your difficulties to let loose.” harper winked as she looked at the painting, a smile forming on her face.  there was color, the female anatomy and everything in between.  nodding here head, she leaned back and gave patrick a smile. “i never would’ve known you knew the female anatomy. it’s a step in the right direction.” harper looked at the model and waved her away, and the girl got up quickly and threw on a robe before going into the dressing room.  “i can close up here, i’ll come early tomorrow for my shift and open up as well.” and before she knew it, it was just patrick and harper.  “how are you feeling? feeling like you can open up more, enjoy the process?”

harper raised an eyebrow at patrick when he said they weren’t good friends, her heart dropping slightly. no, they weren’t good friends. she would say they probably weren’t even friends at all, but she was trying to help, and she wouldn’t say it out loud that they weren’t friends. was she being too much? sometimes that happened with harper. her help was overwhelming to most people. she made eye contact with roger, who raised an eyebrow at her, silently asking if patrick was cool to stay. she nodded her head before turning back to their spot, setting down his shot glass as he protested against it, giving her some bullshit reason about mixing alcohol and not having dinner yet. handing the bottle off, harper turned back to patrick, downed her shot, and shrugged her shoulders. “you’re so worried about getting help with that stupid class. do you ever just loosen up and forget about school for a few minutes?” she turned back to her easel and started back up with her painting.  “this is supposed to be fun. what are you worried about? your appearance? who your friends with? how people see you? just stop thinking for a few seconds. everything will be better if you do that.” was she annoyed? maybe? was it because he said they weren’t friends? definitely.  if she had one thing in common with heather (which she did, they were more alike than most people would like), it was that most things were taken personally, and then taken too far. apparently this situation was no different.  

patrick could tell he severely pissed her off, even if it wasn’t by much. sometimes his words, whether true or not, can come accross as harsh. “it’s just…school is important to me. even if it’s an elective.” he sighed as he looked over at what she was painting. she seemed so…free when compared to him. her painting had much more color and life to it than his did that was for sure. and from her comments, in hindsight, patrick probably shouldn’t have said they weren’t friends, kind of a dick thing to say. “okay…i will.” he said, as he lifted his shot glass that was filled with vodka. “let’s see if you’re right about this.”

and as much as he would hate to admit it…she was right. sure, patrick’s head was spinning, and his empty stomach did nothing for it…but after two vodka shots and one and a half cups of scotch… he was actually having fun. he painted all the details of the nude woman before him, with different colors and shapes….and it actually didn’t look half bad. and heck…he and harper were getting along better. he wasn’t too much in his head, they were laughing, she got him to talk a lot more…which was insanely hard to do. “so you’re a gemini right?” he laughed as he took another drink of his scotch. “you’ve definitely got an ENFP or ENSP personality, which is a common trait for gemini. i also suspect you’re the middle child? am i getting close?”

Was Harper being stubborn? Yes. But, if you knew the Reese’s, you knew that was right up their alley. So, when Patrick apologized (he said he would try, so that was an apology in her book), her attitude changed instantly. That was all she wanted in the first place. Rather quickly the night turned around. The vodka seemed to help him, and while she was done with her painting, he was still working on his while they talked and got to know each other. “Am I that obvious?” He nailed it on the head. A Gemini, ENFP, she was curious how much astrology he actually knew. “Gemini sun, Sagittarius moon and Cancer ascending. I’m pretty all over the place. And I am the middle child, with a twin, which is pretty fitting. There’s 8 of us, so imagine my luck of being right in the middle. Let me guess you...” she turned to Patrick and stared him in intently, going over the last hour they had spent together. “Sagittarius, INJF.... Libra moon and a Sag ascending? And you’re giving me some oldest or only child vibes.” She wasn’t well versed in astrology since she’d only just taken a liking to looking further. “How off am I? Be honest, I only just looked into this stuff like... a year ago.”

harper laughed and rolled her eyes at his privacy, then at the insult, which others surely heard. “artists are great with their fingers, but we can also hear things.” she winked at him as she began her painting, rolling her eyes again at his sarcasm, but catching his look once he took the sip. she knew a thing or 2 about scotch. once he started painting, her eyes wandered to his painting, noticing that his painting was missing… things.  looking over to him as he spoke, she shrugged her shoulders. “right now, no, it’s not extra credit. it’s meant to help you loosen up. clearly… that hasn’t happened yet.” standing up, she moved to behind patrick and squatted to his line of sight, moving a little so she could see what he saw.  “first, you’re skimping on the details. if you were doing abstract, then fine, but I don’t think that’s what you’re going for.” she gave him a side-eye, knowing better than to fully turn to him, since their lips would be centimeters apart, and he would surely be able to smell the liquor she had drank before meeting up with him. “it’s okay to look at her breasts. that’s what she’s getting paid for.” she whispered in his ear before leaning back. putting her hands on his shoulders, she gently rubbed them, then shook him a little. “come on, just let loose a little.  here, let me…” turning, she looked towards roger, the owner.  “if everyone doesn’t mind, i’d like to crack open the good stuff and get the music a little louder. my friend here, he needs to loose up a bit.” she winked at patrick one more time before going to where roger kept the liquor for only those he knew, grabbing the bottle of vodka and turning the music up a little louder when there were no objections. pouring 2 shots into glasses, she set it down for the next pair before heading back over to patrick and setting it down. “loosen up. “

patrick continued painting, but it looked like harper was very unimpressed by what he had painted so far. “i’m just painting her….lines…” he said confused as he continued to sip his scotch, hoping it would black him out from this utter weird experience. “i haven’t gotten there yet.” he said, just as harper demanded they turn up the music and bring out the “good stuff” whatever that was. “okay we’re not that good friends everyone.” he announced right after her. soon enough the music was louder, and harper disappeared, and patrick wondered what the heck he was getting himself into with this girl. but soon enough she was back with two shot glasses and a bottle of vodka. “you’ve got to be kidding…” he started saying as she poured the shots and handed one to him. “no no no no no.” he doth protested, carefully examining the contents in the glass. “not only have i not eaten dinner, but mixing different alcohols can definitely get you more messed up quicker…do you really think any of this will help me in class?”

harper didn’t speak as her heeled boots clicked on the cracked sidewalks, making her way to the familiar building, her eyes glimmering in the evening light.  “if I were going to kill you, I wouldn’t bring you here. Although, it would be a good way to go, trust me.” She winked as she entered the code into the back door and let patrick walk in, following closely behind. normally she wouldn’t have found herself in this position, bringing some random to her safe haven, to her part-time job that no one knew about. yet here she was, helping this kid raise his grade. well, helping him get in touch with his inner artist to raise his grade.  plus, if she approved of his work tonight, it could count towards extra credit, which she hadn’t told him yet. harper laughed when they walked into the room, continuing to head towards 2 empty easels. “oh, come on now. i know you’ve seen plenty of naked women. it’s her job to sit there, and it’s our job to capture her beauty.”  Pulling a bottle of 30-year-old scotch she’d splurged on when she first found this place, pouring some for herself before grabbing the empty wine glass at patrick’s station and filling it up a little more than usual, tilting it towards him. “relaxes the nerves, opens up the mind, doesn’t taste too bad, either.” cheersing her glass with his, she took a sip before grabbing her paint brush and beginning the work. 

patrick wasn’t sure what to make of this, as he was thrusted into this situation by harper, and dragged to one of the empty easels. “whether i have or not is none of your business. are all artists this insane?” he said, before noticing some of the other participants around him looking a bit offended. he gave an apolegetic look, before he picked up the wine glass harper filled with scotch. “classy.” he said sarcastically before clinking his glass with hers. he took a sip, giving an impressed look to the fact it was a decent type of scotch. he looked around at his options of paint. he kind of shrugged, and took the black paint, into his brush and looked up the nude woman and started painting her lines. “and how is this going to help?” he asked, trying to avoid staring at her inappropriate bits, and left them blank. “is this extra credit or something?”

“okay, where the hell are you taking me?” patrick would rather be doing anything than worrying about his elective class. he thought when he signed up for art, it would be an easy A, but he was sorely mistaken, with his recent grades on projects. and now his new art partner, harper, was taking him somewhere mysterious. apparently to “help him get in touch” or whatever their teacher was going on about. but what he did know, is that if this girl could help him raise his C grade in the class, he would take it. eventually they arrived at some sketchy old building. “i’m definitely getting killed tonight, aren’t i?” he asked, as he was dragged through the building. when they arrived at the room, all he saw was a circle full of easels and drunks, and one very naked lady in the middle. “no…way…”
