does anyone else remember being a hapless american child looking at the prices of books on the inside flap and wondering. do we just hate canadians? this book is $8 here and $13 there, that feels..... mean somehow

you know that one post or whatever about useless super powers? me and my friends recently discovered a web game called border guesser, where you try to guess the country as you watch its border be drawn out. the faster you can do it with as little of the border drawn as possible, the better.

anyway, i have a friend who accomplishes this in 10 secs avg for each round, meanwhile the rest of us just stare at him like he's a fucking alien. because like... wtf.

i hate working in tech right now man i just can’t bring myself to be excited in any way about generative ai.

pros: the most provable thing it is capable of is generating a lot of statistically average code, but it can do it faster than any human can! and idk a lot of people find it useful for doing shit they didn’t really want to do anyways.

cons: it lowers the barrier to entry for pretty much any online anti-social behavior you can think of including image generation of csam. it has helped flood the internet with garbage that’s made almost solely for the sake of seo. it hallucinates information so you can never be 100% sure of it’s output and unlike a human it will never say “i don’t know” and you can break any guardrails put in place and there’s no way to prevent that from happening. and btw it’s in everything now because investors need to justify why they set billions of dollars on fire training these giant generative ai models.

why am i supposed to believe in this “future” of software dev man lmfao yes there is nothing inherently bad about the technology but idk that’s not very consoling when it is being used/is trying to be used to make pretty much every avenue of life worse. like “generative ai is just a tool” really is the equivalent of saying “guns don’t kill people, people kill people”. it’s such a nothing ass statement you might as well not have said anything at all.

like sorry this is a white man who did three combat tours in iraq and then afterwards joined fucking Blackwater and he has a totenkopf tattoo on his chest that he only got covered up when he finally got called out on it and prior to this most recent rape accusation he already had other allegations against him for being physically threatening to past partners and also just had generally bad behavior in his past relationships and i watched a lot of big "leftists" online defend and excuse all of this. and only now are people rescinding their support for him and asking him to cancel his campaign????

it is crazy though the lengths companies will go to to fool you into thinking you're buying something high quality but you're really not.

like in regards to prev reblog about the difference between "ice cream" and "frozen dairy dessert", a lot of brands will add annatto as a ingredient to make the ice cream a pale yellow-ish color.

this is to trick people into thinking it's made with egg yolks (which is an ingredient typically found in more "premium" ice cream) as the stabilizer, however if you look at the ingredients label they're really using a bunch of vegetable gums or other emulsifiers.

part of me wants to be like "do people really not know this" and part of me knows full well i only read the labels because i have gut problems and don't want to suffer

anyway i've had my eye on the fat content for years. actual ice cream made with real cream won't trigger my lactose intolerance, because the higher the fat content of dairy, the lower the lactose content. my personal tipping point is around half-and-half so if you make "ice cream" with with skim milk, the enshittification i experience is unfortunately literal

#van leeuwen and jenni's are comparatively expensive to common store brands #but also they're the only brands that i think i'll buy at this point
