Background
Alecto was raised primarily by her father, and to say she was raised is a bad way to put it. When she was eleven, the neighbors caught sight of her father hitting her - heâd long ago taken to physical abuse alongside his daily verbal abuse - and called the cops. Alecto was quickly removed from the home, only to be placed in foster homes where she was overlooked and punished for her violent tendencies. Those who sought to adopt her were always turned off when they learned of her âaggressiveâ nature, mistaking her sharp cheekbones for beauty, not a warning. She always tried to escape the foster homes, to try to find her brother and get back to him at least, but she was just moved farther and farther from him. By the time she was old enough to simply not return to the foster home without anyone caring if she did or not, sheâd given up on trying to seek out her brother.
It was hard on her own, barely eighteen and she relied more on the money she earned walking the streets than she could get anywhere else as a temp custodian or flipping burgers. She had no degree, having dropped out of high school when she decided it was easier than being told come the end of her senior year that she wouldnât have the grades to graduate. Part of her had settled on the idea that she was going to be forced to continue a life of prostitution and drug dealing and whatever other illegal and sordid measures could get her enough to buy a can of soup, and she thought that would be the life she led until she inevitably ended up dead somewhere at twenty-five. Drugs never interested her, not even after all she went through, but she saw the way the people who sought out hookers like her tended to treat the women like breakable dolls. It terrified her, but starving and dying in that way was even more terrifying.Â
She was nineteen when a break came for her unexpectedly. While with a man in a run-down motel, their door was broken down and a bounty hunter came in to take the man she was with. She was absolutely fascinated by the idea that someone could make a living like that, seeking people out for whoever asked. Without hesitation, she attached herself to the bounty hunter, and forced him to teach her the ins and outs of the trade so she could break off her own six months later with her first very own gun. She came to find she was good with them, able to remember the models and how to assemble them with ease, and her ability to concentrate her focus on the tiniest detail helped with her physical aim and her ability to find breadcrumbs when people tried to go off the grid. She did whatever job she could take for a while, dedicating her whole life to the trade, and it wasnât even for the money anymore.Â
Her first job for the Mafia was just for someone low-level taking care of some personal business, but she did the job well and efficiently. The next time he asked her to do a job, he didnât want her to bring the person back to him. He wanted her to kill them. It startled her, but she knew better than to go against the Mafia. It was the first time she used her aim to hit a fatal spot, not just a place that would incapacitate. It didnât feel good, but it didnât leave her wracked with guilt, either. She was a worker and this was her job. She continued to do jobs for the guy, and then a few of his friends, and then continued as her good reputation was shared with higher-ups within the Mafia, and she found that they became her primary clientele. So long as they paid well, she wasnât planning on switching anytime soon.
