“There’s no need for formalities, Harry. You know how much I detest them,” she said, a smile appearing on her winsome features. “I wouldn’t necessarily say that. It took me a good ten years to pay off medical school debt while raising a kid. And I, for one, enjoy your little shop here. Success is measured by personal happiness, no?” Sure, she was pretty well-off now, but it hadn’t always been like that. “Hmm…let’s see.” Madeline took a ten dollar bill out of her wallet and handed it to him “Keep the change,” she winked.
“Right you are, Madeline,” Harry said lowly, his voice still carrying a tease. He absentmindedly wiped the counter off with his hand when she spoke, and he nodded understandingly. “Of course. It must not have been easy,” he said admiringly, thinking of how he could never withstand medical school. A divorce nearly killed him; quite literally. “And how is Hayley nowadays, hm?” He smiled widely when Madeline complimented his shop. “Why thank you, madame,” he said, taking on a aristocratic tone to continue teasing her. His smile faltered then, and he looked down at the coutner. “Yes, I think so. Depends on how much personal happiness one has.” He cleared his throat and forced a smile back onto his features. “Wow,” he said, taking the money and winking back. “I’ll make sure not to spend it all in one place, eh?”
