are we trying to mislead people who haven’t actually listened to the call her daddy podcast, or am i missing something? because some of the things i keep seeing people claim… aren’t what sjm said. And I don’t mean just from one side, i think every ship has done this at some point.
it’s one thing to interpret her words. it’s another to paraphrase them in a way that changes what was actually being said.… like…guys… i’m trying not to let my ship preference bias me here, but i don’t think sjm mentioning the ✨spark✨ on the podcast is the huge gotcha some people are making it out to be.
at least from the context and the way she talked about it, it sounded like she was referring to the chemistry or attraction between two characters. that’s all. she was literally talking about writing the kinds of things that “turn her on”. then she goes on to explain that she’ll write two characters trying to kiss just to see if there’s chemistry or if it feels like she’s forcing them together.
anyway, to give an example, setting mating bonds aside for a second, and setting aside this now almost sacred word, if you had to describe that two characters need to have attraction, chemistry, and passion, wouldn’t you naturally use the word spark?
isn’t that just… the most intuitive word to use?
that’s why I’m hesitant to treat that single word as definitive proof of anything. It feels like a very normal way to describe romantic chemistry, not necessarily a piece of hidden lore. also, using it in every argument when you don’t know what to say… i don’t get pissed off really easily but can you have a debate without bringing this (very very vague) argument up?
but I’m also not convinced that the podcast somehow confirmed there are two different kinds of mating bonds as some elriels say. listening to that section again, it didn’t sound like she was saying there are two separate types of bonds. to me it sounded more like she was just saying that sometimes a mating bond is right for the people involved, and sometimes it isn’t.
to me when she says “when nature picks right” sounds like she’s describing the ideal version of a mating bond, as if that person is the missing piece of your soul finally falling into place. whereas when she talks about people who aren’t happy with their mate, she’s basically saying nature can get it wrong. You can still end up miserable even if a mating bond exists.
that’s why I don’t read that interview as confirming two different kinds of mating bonds. i do think people may have overanalyzed that particular quote. it could absolutely end up meaning what some people think it means, but I don’t think the interview itself made that nearly as clear as some are claiming.
one last thing, “sjm confirmed Elain thinks Lucien is hot.”..… that’s not really what she said.
she was talking about Elain’s trauma of being made. then she basically says: imagine being thrown into this completely unfamiliar world, only to have a stranger suddenly tell you that you’re mates (not her exact words but still)
her point didn’t sound like “Elain is definitely attracted to Lucien.” it sounded more like “(me Elain) i’m mated with someone i don’t know… okay he is hot but then what? what if i don’t want that? i didn’t choose it”
to me, the point of that answer was Elain’s lack of agency, not her attraction. sjm was emphasizing how bizarre and emotionally complicated that situation would be for anyone. whether the stranger is attractive or not doesn’t actually solve the problem she’s describing.
and honestly… i can’t do this anymore. 😭 every single character in this universe is described as ridiculously attractive. I genuinely don’t think ugly faeries exist in Prythian. Rhys is literally introduced as “the most beautiful man I’d ever seen,” and then later Azriel is described as “the most beautiful of the three brothers” (rip Cassian i guess). anyway my point is… they’re all hot. sjm isn’t exactly subtle about making her characters attractive.
i think, once again, people sometimes take one sentence out of the larger context and turn it into a definitive statement that sjm wasn’t really making.
i honestly think people are reading a little too much into what she said. Some of those comments have been analyzed far beyond what was actually stated.
