第四夜「ぬかるみの人魚姫」

　沼の中から、キモノ、と呼んだ。　たったひとりだけ、こたえてくれた。　　ヨドミタマリノジャメのお話。濁って底の見えぬ泥沼に、長い長い尾を持つ人魚が居た。　沼から下った山の麓にはちいさな村があったけれど、異形であると人魚を恐れ、仲良うする者は誰もなかった。　村が日照りに遭った年も、人魚の沼は枯れなかった。そこで沼には時折人が放られた。　色のない着物で、髪を香油に梳かし結い、爪の先には咒の黒、まだ生きている時分から贄は死人の目をしていた。白々と黒々とはためきながら、袂が泥を吸いみぃんな沼底へ沈んでいった。人魚は大蓮の葉を折ってきて、ひとりずつそれにくるんでやった。肝はさかなたちがつついて食べた。村人は水面に浮かぶ切れ端を見留め、人喰い人魚と一層恐れた。　人の世の理を異割ると断られた。　沼から出るなとぐるり一周、人魚は沼ごと紐で括られた。それでも人に興味を持って、人魚はずっとそこで待っていた。もとより恨みの感情を、人魚は持っていなかったから。　だけどこの沼に人魚を訪ね来る、だれもかれもが死人だった。沼淵に咲く黄の花だけが、人魚にとってのいのちだった。　幾年も幾年も経った頃、人魚は封魔の紐に触れる、何かを感じて顔を出した。花より鮮やかな娘がそこに居た。まるで真昼の陽光のような、やわらかくあたたかな黄色いいのち、見たこともない生きた瞳の。　嬉しくなった人魚は、長い指で指して「キモノ」と呼んだ。黄色のもの、生きたものだと、精一杯の親愛を込めて。　キモノはおずおずとこたえてくれた。そして、人魚を「タマリ」というの、初めての贈り物もしてくれた。キモノ、タマリ、繰り返し歌いながら、タマリはぬかるみを何度も潜った。タマリの目を見て微笑んだ人、キモノは初めてのぬくもりだった。

　さてさて、この先キモノは紐を切り、タマリと一緒になるのだが、どうして沼にキモノが来たのか。そのお話はまた今度。

This is Mr. Trash Wheel. He eats garbage so it doesn’t wind up in the ocean.

Here he is, eating said garbage in the Baltimore Harbor. He runs on solar energy, and all collected waste is sorted into appropriate waste streams.
