The idea here is that: the tomarrys were on a decade long hide-and-chase. Harry had a very close call a few years back, but was able to escape his clutches - leaving sharp scratches on Tom"s left hand. Tom did not bother to heal the scars. It felt....sentimental. A physical mark that shows his dedication to one, Harry James Potter.
