i love that we get rocky’s POV in the movie and i specifically love when he looks at grace any time grace is speaking

eridians emit sound from 5 different sets of vocal chords. not only is information 6x more condensed because of the layering of different tones and chords, it is spread out and dispersed and I think that makes total sense for a species that relies on sound to get an accurate representation of form. aside from the amazing puppeteering in the movie, the way rocky glides his arms and claws through the air as he intones different words and names literally act as a amplifier or transducer for certain sounds - so language becomes an experience of literally moving the dense air around oneself. the movements they make are intentional, which is so diametrically opposite to the movements humans make, sometimes without even thinking. all their movements serve purpose.

back to rocky POV - when grace speaks the sound of his voice acoustically reverberating through his chest and out of his mouth causes a ripple around his face which blurs the shape rocky is able to see based off of his 'echolocation'.

it'd be like when the sun is in your eyes for humans

rocky has become accustomed to it and has seen grace work quietly enough to have memorized the shape and plains of his face even when it disappears so his voice can take its place

and I keep thinking about eridians being puzzled about how formless grace seems to be, of how thin and simplistic his actual speaking voice is in comparison to what eridians can do with their vocal chords and its so omnidirectional that its blinding and all of the extra motion he makes when he talks and exists does not support his sounds in the way any of them are accustomed to - and thats outside all of the other ways human form is constantly changing and making noise (bending, stretching, weight gain or loss, breathing, squishy, vulnerable etc.)

so naturally, im thinking of names being treated as stories in eridian language, and the more you experience and accomplish, the more highly revered, cared for, loved, the longer the name
